Run Windows Update NOW.

Post by noel »

MS just released their WMF patch. This is a CRITICAL update. I recommend everyone patch their PCs right NOW.

This is not just an IE issue, so please patch even if you use Firefox.

For info:
A remote code execution security issue has been identified in the Graphics Rendering Engine that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

More information for this update can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=58471

Mods, please feel free to move this to the Computers section at a later date, but please leave it here for a few days to make sure people see this.

Hasn't everyone already unregistered SHIMGVW.DLL and ran Ilfak's patch?

I have, but I'm betting that most people here haven't, and given that Microsoft released this patch ~5 days earlier than they planned, I figured it was important enough to let people know.

Edit: I'll add that I'm going to assume your question was rhetorical, either that or you're an idiot. Do you honestly think that most people even know about unregistering the DLL or the unofficial patch that was highly recommended by many security organizations?

The reality is that most people don't know about it and likely want to do things in a more simple manner that they can more easily understand ala Windows Update.

I appreciate that you want to show off and impress us all with what a big bad super user you are, but be more realistic.

What's a DLL?

Bloody hell, it was a mixture of smartass and rhetorical, especially since the MS fuckers finally deigned to release a consumer level fix, and I thank Ilfak for the save to our network.

My bad, I didn't sense the sarcasm. I'm so used to you playing know-it-all it didn't register.

My apologies... this time.

I find this whole thing highly amusing and am willing to bet that if it wasn't for Ilfak's patch MS would not have released this until Tuesday.
