Motherboard / RAM question-

Post by Breagen »

Ok I just bought a third stick of RAM and it seems that after installing it my motherboard reset to dual channel mode and I can't for the life of me figure out how to turn it off. I've done it once before when I first built the computer but I just can't remember how I did it now.

It's an ASUS A7N8X motherboard and if anyone knows how to turn the dual channel RAM off I'd really appreciate it.

Did you have the RAM in dual-channel mode before you installed the third stick? If so, re-install the initial pair of dual-channel RAM in DIMMs 1 and 3, or 2 and 4, which automatically has them work in single-channel mode. I've never worked with three sticks of RAM in a four DIMM motherboard, so I would -assume- that after installing the initial pair of RAM in a single-channel setup, installing a third pair in either remaining DIMM would not remove the single channel setup. Again, this is simply an assumption. Experiment and see if it works.

Is the third stick a different type of RAM than the other two? If it's a different type (XMS instead of Value; Corsair instead of Kingston, etc), then your motherboard is probably having a funky time trying to use two different types. It's always a recommendation to never mix and match RAM, and if you've done such a thing, your motherboard might not recognize a third stick as even being there. Check your specs and see if your computer is utilizing every stick.

Hope you fix your problem.

No I was running it in single channel mode with two DIMM's before. The motherboard only has three slots for RAM so there aren't too many ways to change it around.

The RAM is the same type as the other RAM I have apart from being a 1 gig stick while the other two are both 512. The computer is recognizing I have the full 2 GB of RAM and uses all of it. The reason I am trying to turn it off is my computer seems to crash whenever I run dual channel, which was the reason I had it off but now I just can't figure out how I did it and it's driving me crazy =/

I have the same board, no crashes (w/ 3 sticks in)

I don't think it will even run in dual channel mode w/ 3 sticks in...
