looking for a new cellphone!
currently i'm considering purchasing a Sony Ericsson W800i
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc= ... &pid=10245
this phone goes for $499.99 and that is pretty much the max i want to toss into getting a new phone; not including service...i don't want a $99 phone or a free phone with service...i'm looking for something that is soo kick ass that if i lose it i will want to kill myself
i will probably roll with cingular service unless i'm totally blown away by something else someone brings to the table(i live in the NYC area so cingular or verizon seem to be the best for coverage area from what i've been reading)
i've also toyed around with the idea of getting a blackberry or a sidekick II; though i don't know too much about em
sooooo...post about your high end cell phones and lemme know what else out there kicks ass

Go with Verizon. Best and strongest signal / coverage imo. I just got a samsung a950 which isn't high end by any means but I'm happy with it.

Only thing with Verizon is that they use CDMA technology... yea they have shitloads of towers but the technology is late 80s. Cingular bit the bullet last year or the year before and quit selling their TDMA phones (similar technology) switching everything over to GSM which is the standard everywhere else in the world but the US.
ALLTEL uses CDMA as well and I have had them for 12 years or so (use to work there). My wife has a V710, I had POS T720 and my mom and sister other models. I thought it sounded great, roaming with Verizon (who ALLTEL is partered with due to technology - look for these 2 to merg in the coming months) is FANTASTIC!
But then I got my V551 (not a RAZR but not too shabby) on Cingular so that my office could foot the bill rather than me (2000+ min a month was getting expensive)... the clarity, connection, speed of downloads with EDGE is so far and above CDMA it's not even a comparison. My GSM phone (quad band) will work anywhere in the world and sounds just like a landline, no possible switch to analog that eats up the battery, no dropped calls etc... just a reliable phone.
Mine, due to the company is on Cingular (blue) which is the old AT&T wireless SIMs but is still GSM and I can call any other Cingular customer for free. As soon as my mom and sisters contracts are up I'm switching them as well.
Just my experiences, hope it helps!

PS - My friend has the W800 and loves it. It's also a GSM only phone so you would have to go with Cingular. T-Moble may be GSM as well but I'm not certian.

i've been with cingular for about 4 years, and haven't had any problems. i travel a lot, and everywhere i go i have coverage, except in some of the remote mountain ranges where i don't care a whole lot about receiving calls. other than that, no complaints.
i had the motorola v400, which broke, and the v551. i traded up for the razr earlier this year, and i love it. it works for everything i want it to. i also like the clamshell design, so buttons aren't accidentally being pressed or the screen isn't exposed.
i have lots of gadgets, and each is for a specific purpose. i'd rather have 5 different electronic toys that do what they're supposed to really well than have one that does a mediocre job of all of them. i probably wouldn't get a lot of use out of a 2.0MP camera, and i carry two ipods with me. but then again, i have a purse... i don't know how guys fit all of their electronics into their pockets ><
if i were buying a cellphone/mp3player/camera, i'd go with a black razr. it's a great cell phone. then i'd get the black nano because it looks really slick with the black razr. then i'd buy a digital camera with at least 5MP.

Motorola phones on GSM networks are the best combo you can get. Be sure to get Quad-band (for access to GSM networks anywhere in the world) and Bluetooth.
One great advantage of GSM is that if you want to upgrade your phone, you just pop out the sim card and put it in the new phone. Verizon and Sprint lock you into buying a phone from them, and if you get the wrong phone up front you're screwed until the contract expires. While the GSM vendors do lock their phones to their service, there are many people offering unlocked phones and unlocking service on ebay.
Amazon was running a deal where you get a Razr phone free after $150 rebate and a 2 year Cingular activation. I have read that some smaller cell phone stores in NYC and other major metropolitan areas are offering even better deals on Razr's, e.g. more rebates than you pay up front. Check the cell phone kiosks in Sams Club or Costco if you're a member, I've gotten great deals on phones there.
Oh and what those folks above said...go GSM (Cingular or T-Mobile) and avoid Verizon and Sprint/Nextel. Last I heard, despite their claims of being the "BEST NETWURK EVAR!!1" there are massive areas of the Mass Pike between Boston and Springfield where there is no service at all on Verizon's CDMA network.

Know that bulge in his pocket? He isn't happy to see youSyenye wrote: but then again, i have a purse... i don't know how guys fit all of their electronics into their pockets ><

Unless you blow up pictures to huge sizes there really isn't that huge of a need for a 5MP or over camera. It is especially a waste if you only put it on the web

CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access; it is an extremely efficient means of using analog bandwidth, offers superior fault tolerance, theoretical higher data transfer rates, and supports better security.Marbus wrote:Only thing with Verizon is that they use CDMA technology... yea they have shitloads of towers but the technology is late 80s. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications; it is actually an implementation of TDMA, or Time Division Multiple Access technology.
Not that I have a degree in this field or anything....

On the topic of networks and phones, this is locale, preference, and lifestyle question. I will get a 10% corporate discount on my Cingular bills, so I am switching from Sprint shortly. Odds are I will get a Blackberry, given that email is a large part of my day, but my wife is likely to end up with a RAZR.
I have some Blackberry experience and honestly, it is great if you need access to emails but it is friggin huge. A lot of people I know started carrying a cell phone as well because of the sheer size of the Blackberry. A friend of mine and his company just ditched their Blackberries for smartphones instead (Treo isn't it?) and he loves the change.

I have sprint and ive liked it actually. The times I have been in NYC, I didn't have reception problems anywhere (I mostly am in Bronx, Harlem and Manhatten and only small parts of brooklyn, queens and yonkers) except for at my friends house, which is only because its right across the bay from Laguardia and the planes practically fucking scrape his roof when they land.
Sprints phones are decent as far as extras and capabilities of that sort, but not great. The reason I am sticking with them though is for when the Nextel phones and sprint phones become one. To be honest, most people I know/met/saw in New York had nextels. The only reason I don't have a nextel phone now (besides my contract not being up) is that I don't know that many people here in MN that use it.
I had verizon previously and I had very shitty reception and a lot of dead areas compared to sprint. But then again that can change a lot with the area.
