Carlos Almost a Met

Post by Canelek »

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2234421
The Mets reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday to acquire Delgado and $7 million from the Florida Marlins for first baseman Mike Jacobs and pitcher Yusmeiro Petit, a baseball official familiar with the talks said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal was not final.
I was really hoping to see Jacobs at first so the Mets could work on getting a second baseman and catcher. He showed real potential towards the end of last season, as well as his torrid hitting in AA ball. Also, Petit is a potential superstar. Delgado will really be under the microscope with the Scott Kazmir trade still on fans minds.

However, Carlos is a bonafide slugger, and a pretty decent glove at first. This could also be that extra spark needed to sway Wagner to accept yesterday's offer for a contract.

We shall see...

Delgado is a class act.

We still miss him in Toronto.

What's a Mets thread w/out the obligatory ramblings of the Braves Contingency

I'm actually surprised considering he turned down the Mets last year. He became a favorite to bash by the fans. This also would mean Manny is a nogo

Carlos is much less drama than Manny, by far, so I like this, if there had been a choice. I still am not so sure about trading away two of their best prospects, but Delgado is a pretty safe bet. This also allows for some money to be spent at catcher/right/second, even if Wagner signs.

Minaya may overpay free agents, but I am just glad that he is not afraid to pull the trigger.

Carlos is the antithesis of drama.

In the countless years the Jays fielded shitty teams, Delgado was front and center when the media was lambasting them... never losing his cool.

Absolutely. Delgado has been a gem throughout his career. His only media blemish is the whole not participating in 'God Bless America'. Hell, that makes me like him even more. Good on Carlos for standing up for his own beliefs.

I think I am over losing young talent and ready to cheer for the new 3-man. Also, having Delgado in the lineup may alleviate some of the pressure on Beltran, who obviously felt the pressure last season.

New York is a different animal than Toronto, and certainly Florida, but it is not like he has not been around for awhile.

Delgado turned down the Mets last year because he wanted to be "on a winning team" yet turned down a chance to be on the Dodgers when they were in the pennant race. He also bad mouthed Omar. He will bring pop though, Floyd is good enough to protect him, and Wright/Beltran/Reyes will be all over the basepaths.

Manny might be a goofball but he doesn't really do anything that bad. Sure there's a lot more room in Shea to botch a fly. However, he's also in a completely different league of hitter than Delgado. There's no way I would prefer Delgado over Manny, a first ballot hall of famer that never gets hurt.

But as I said, this certainly helps the Mets

Delgado and Manny were pretty much the same hitter last year, but Delgado is cheaper and comes with a lot less baggage and whining.

I'm not sure how you can say they are so different.
Both are consistent in that they rarely get injured.
Both can be counted on to bring home 100+ RBIs.
Both have very stong slugging percentages.
Delgado has 9 consecutive seasons with over 30 HR, while Manny has 8.

Given that Manny has nearly a full season more of at bats, their numbers are pretty damn near equal. The only notable difference is that Manny cranks out a lot more singles and has a much better average to show for it. And keep in mind that Delgado played for god-fucking-awful teams in Toronto in the past decade.

I'd be very surprised if Delgado isn't a first ballot hall of famer as well. The only thing going against him is that he played most of his career in a 'small market team.

Absolutely, but moreso because he's never played in the post-season. That shouldn't hurt him in anyway, but it probably will. I'd go a step further and say that both should be first ballot HoFers if they retired right now.
