LOL Kansas Legislates the Scientific Method...

Post by Arborealus »

The new standards say high school students must understand major evolutionary concepts. But they also declare that the basic Darwinian theory that all life had a common origin and that natural chemical processes created the building blocks of life have been challenged in recent years by fossil evidence and molecular biology.

In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena.
Fun you can now legislate the scientific method to make it what your state wants! So much for that pesky empiricism...

I'm not sure whether to be amused or frightened.

I wonder what their take on the red shift and things along those lines are.

But on the upside...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051109/sc_ ... olution_dc
DOVER, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Voters on Tuesday ousted a Pennsylvania local school board that promoted an "intelligent-design" alternative to teaching evolution, and elected a new slate of candidates who promised to remove the concept from science classes.

Exactly what fossil evidence has been dug up recently that throws doubt on evoloution? I keep up as well as any layman can, and I haven't heard of anything. In fact, all the shit I've read about has explicitly SUPPORTED it.

The reason the average christian fundy gives is that "since there is no way to prove every facette of evolution from beginning to end to 100% certainty, it is obviously all false".

Do a google for fossilized boots and extrapolate from there.

Not that I am a Christian Fundy, but I find this statement laughable.
Thats the exact arguement that aethists have been using forever in regards to God.

To be fair, they suggest you can't prove any of it (religion), and in fact the bible suggests as much; to ask for proof of faith is to lack faith. A beautifully circular argument also used to great effect in The Emporer's New Clothes.

(I'm neither aethiest nor fundie, perhaps moral relativist.)

Ermmmm no atheist I know, myself included, would use that argument.

There is zero empirical or even reasonable evidence for the existence of god(s).

It is all a matter of Faith and personal belief. Don't buy what the others(anyone) are pushing.

I'm going to extrapolate that the boot wasn't buried under 200 distinct layers of sediment

As an agnostic, I think this is one of the most apt statements ever used to summarize a lot of religious debate.

Here is a wonderfully circular piece of logic asserting intelligent design theory.

Essentially they assert if you cannot prove evolution in EVERY case, that intelligent design must be accepted as true.

Huh? A fun read in an, "omg someone believes this crap" sort of way...

Shhhh, you'll make their brains explode.

There's a guy I work with who believes this stuff, sharp guy, engineering degree, etc.. He's convinced the world is at most 20k years old. You've probably met him Masteen :o

We've discussed this and he swallows it, compeletely baffles me. The "proofs" they give are laughable, especially when the much simpler solution isn't contradicted by the bible in any way that I can see. These people need to stick to the black part (the print) of the bible. Why they need to make this up to prove their faith is beyond me.

Could God have done it this way? Yes, but it's not nearly as impressive IMO.

Someone's got an agenda to push just like other groups, and is fairly well organized.
