It's not like it is a surprise, they have never really cast anyone that fits the ideal of a superhero/villan. Wolverine is a great example, I think Hugh Jackman is actually really good for the role but he doesn't look like Wolverine proportion wise at all.
In the last Spiderman in particular you can tell that they had some heavy body suit and or CGI for Toby Maguire (sp) so there really isn't any need for them to go find some bodybuilder who has never acted before just to play the role.
The villians ARE NOT ANNOUNCED YET. In my opinion, it will be Sandman / Green Goblin 2. I dont see Venom being introduced in one movie. The only thing announced about Topher Grace is that he is going to play a villian. Who? I dont know. However, this will probably be Topher's most important role EVER. This is the first time he is really going to play a big, serious role. If he can pull it off, hes going to be set for a long time.
I don't see how they couldn't have Green Goblin with the ending of #2...
Personally I'd like to see Venom or Carnage but I think they need to wait a movie or two more before they would be able to get enough background for them. Sandman would also be a good choice and I think they could introduce him for the next movie or the one after easily.
I'm not really that familiar w/ Venom, but I do remember the gaping maw and the long forked tongue.. no one's "right" for that. Perhaps Topher was going to play the before and voice act?

they aren't required to follow the comics 100%. I think it would be kind of cool to see some wimpy beanpole put the suit on and turn into this hulked out monster.

That's how i believe the story will unfold in Spidey 3.

No, they dont have to follow the comic 100%. However, the closer they follow the comic, the better it turns out. In the early 90's spiderman cartoon, they actually introduced venom in a decent way. Spiderman saved John Jameson from a space shuttle crash. Some samples they had in the shuttle cracked open and the symbiot got loose and onto spiderman. Spidey used the symbiot for a while but got rid of it. But then the symbiot found its way to brock.
The problem I see with this however is that the cartoon already did it. Fans might feel a bit cheapend if they use the same thing.

Lizard was already cast in Spidey2 when they put Doc Connors on screen. Eddie Brock was mentioned in part 1 but never actually shown on screen so that's wide open.
I'm pretty sure that if they turn Harry Osborne (James Falco) into a bad guy, they'll make him into Hobgoblin instead of ressurecting the Green Goblin(and that horrible Power Rangers suit).
During an interview this weekend promoting Elizabethtown, Kirsten Dunst confirmed rumors to Zap2it that Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman and Topher Grace is Venom in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, opening in theaters on May 4, 2007.
"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," said Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the Spidey films.
"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she added before reversing her claim. "It's the other way around. You're right," she conceded to a journalist.
Dunst has yet to receive a script for the third film that will begin shooting in January. "But I know the general story. There's a lot that they're trying to fit into this one."

what i dont get is why people are still so obsessed with this movie 'franchise' as it were, when the last spider man movie was even more average than the first. which was really quite average indeed.

comics are more than welcome to have more than action. i just didnt expect slushy shite for around 75% of my movie experience. I'm all for a romance in spiderman. As long as it involves 6-8 lesbians for about half an hour, and the scene ends with tobey maguire spidermanning them. (you know, when you come in your hand and then release it at your girls face).
For the record, we dont hate everything. Most things, certainly. But not everything.
Ah and the riots in Paris. we are finally catching on that its much more fun to wreck another city. But the French arent so much fun to riot with. Every time you try to pick a fight they just end up running away screaming 'je surrender' or something like that.

Even though cheesy by today's standards I'd throw Superman in there too. The Hulk and Daredevil just didn't make the cut. Though semi-entertaining, just not as good. I didn't even bother seeing the latest incarnation of the Punisher. What other comic movies are out there? Fantastic Four was pretty good but I expect a sequel to be really kick ass. I'd really like to see an Avengers movie.
I look forward to the creators presentation of his/her movie. I never understood fans of a movie thinking they know better than the creator. You obviously liked what they offerd the first time you saw what they made...now all of the sudden you know better tahn them? You don't trust in their judgement anymore? ROFL.....too funny.

It all has to do with how the "creators presentation" sticks to the very well documented story they are doing a movie about.

Im confused on your point here, bud. are you aware that in most cases, the film-makers are not the creators of the stories they bring to life on the screen, but rather interpreters like you and I re-telling the story they way they believe it should be told...or with their "twist" so to speak?
Im not claiming to know more about Batman than Burton, but I know for a fact that the Joker didnt murder Wayne's parents.

Movies below aren't even worth watching, but in order of least shitty IMO
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen(never read comic, heard it ruined the comic)
The Punisher(comic relief was the only good part about the movie)
The Hulk(love the director, the actors...what a waste of good talent)
Elektra(fell asleep during it, seemed really lame)
Catwoman(worst superhero movie ever made imo)
Haven't seen FF4 but im guessing its in with the ones at the bottom.

I enjoyed those movies. My list wasn't all inclusive. I don't consider Sin City a "superhero" type movie or it would be ranked near the top. Daredevil wasn't that bad either even with the Ben factor. Hellboy is another non Hero type movie for me. If I recategorized it, it would rank just below Spiderman.
The Superman movies were so gay I don't know what to do with them. You have to factor in the advances in special effects since then and the whole movement in the movie industry for more gritty movies instead of whatever you would call the Superman movies.
Sin-City I agree isn't a "superhero" movie but I do think Hellboy is, it's just different than what we're used to from DC/Marvel. When you have a telapathic alien fishman and a hilarious demonic brute teamed up with some secret federal organization vs. immortal Nazi's who want to bring hell on earth...it sounds superhero enough to me.
P.S. Sin-City is just so good, the more I think about it the further up it moves on my list, lol.
I guess I see Superhero in the classic sense and mainly Marvel and DC. I am not sure about other comics. All the other movies adapted from comics are great and all but I would be fine not knowing that they were from a comic. Constantine is one of those movies that I didn't know was a comic first. Movies like Spawn were just too freaky for me to consider him a super hero.
