Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

Post by Leonaerd »

This band has always had a fairly popular following, but I never really liked them because I felt they screamed too much. Well, not anymore! Their guitars are still blazingly fast, their drummer is still insane, but this time, they have vocal harmony and refrain from screaming (for the most part). I've only heard the CD twice so far, but I can easily recognize every song as being far different than the others on the CD (something I can't say about most heavy metal CDs).

A lot of the songs are actually catchy, and I would almost consider this CD as being "Pop." Their song on the radio, "City of Evil," is what drove me to purchase the album. I don't care if they're "corporate sellouts," or whatever cliche term people want to use to describe a band that is popular. I consider this the best effort Avenged Sevenfold has come out with, and possibly my favorite Metal CD yet.

My favorites tracks are:

The Wicked End
Bat Country
Sidewinder

Looked up a few reviews and listened to a few samples of their tracks and what surprised me the most was how well spoken the people who liked this album were. Good grammar/spelling and able to write entire paragraphs without using any internet 'shorthand' misspellings.

Anyway, seems like it would be a good listen for anyone who likes classic metal.

Also, I had no idea there were so many different genres of metal....

heavy metal
power metal
speed metal
hair metal
doom metal
gothic metal
industrial metal
death metal
vampire metal
melodic death metal
black metal
dark metal
avant-garde metal
thrash metal
progressive metal
nu metal
viking metal
grindcore

yeah its pretty disgusting how far people will break metal down. You can basically break metal down into 3 cat's
Hard rock (less complex but harder cords)
Heavy Metal (more complex cords)
Industrial Metal (heavy mixing of cords and samples)

It's actually pretty interesting.
While I don't really care for the music, it's pretty wild how diverse 'metal' can be.

I looked up Cannibal Corpse and Carcass on amazon.com to find out what 'grindcore' was. That's some seriously wacky stuff.

It gets even more finite than that really.

There are a few that aren't listed...and then those listed are often broken down to small sub categories.

Lol. Cannibal Corpse. Read their lyrics some time, as I'm sure you weren't able to understand what their lead singer was barking.

i came here to post my review and saw one was already posted, so ill just say a few things..

im a fan of Waking the Fallen album, i thought it was perfect and loved every song.

A7X became the band i listened to for perfect incorporation of scream-o and singing.. but with this new CD, its like they did away with all the screaming.. granted they were about 20 years old when they released waking the fallen.

I have found myself debating inside whether i like or hate this album.. i always liked this guys voice, altho it sounds a lot more nasily in this album.

i feel they should have kept to the style they used in Waking the Fallen.. with scream-o and relaxing singing.

However, the guitar is still solid, very GnR slashish.

i say this is one of the albums you have to listen to, and decide for yourself.

From what I understand they had no choice about not screaming. While on tour for Waking the Fallen, Shadow fucked up his vocal cords and had to have some kind of serious medical treatments. He had to work to regain the ability to speak and while training for that he gained another octave or two in singing range/ability but was advised that if he screamed like he used to he might not be able to relearn it. Or something to that effect...

Haven't heard this particular cd, but I wanted to point you towards All That Remains - This Darkened Heart based on that quote alone!

I saw these guys a few years back at Ventura Theater when they were touring with Death By Stereo (I was there for DBS, of course). They are pretty talented but I am not really into that style, whatever goth-hybrid or whatever. They reminded me of a band like AFI, but more brooding.

Talented, yes. Interest to Canno, no. However, they have grown quite a fanbase, so they must be doing something right. :)

Have you heard anything from their new CD, though? It probably sounds much different than what you heard a few years ago. I don't like their old stuff and I can't stop listening to the new CD.

No, I have not heard their new CD. I may check out a song or two though. As long as it is good rock and not so much of a goth or emo thing, then I may like it. :)

Nay goth. Nay emo (though I'm never sure what people define Emo as being). 7 minute triumphs of speedy metal with guitar solos interlaced intermittently. No screaming, either!

listen to some Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Symphony X or Opeth and it'll be easier to comprehend. It's metal, with metal guitar progressions and shredding, with complex keyboard parts, quirky/nonstandard time signatures and many time changes in the songs.
