Woohoo, got that first job =)
I feel a bit selfish in starting a post that praises myself, but you guys are my buddies and I wanted to spread a little happiness =)
Ive been studying Computer Graphics/3D for about a year now. You can see a lot of my work at http://www.ericprovan.com. I graduated about 3 months ago and have been seeking a full time job since. I have been lucky enough to be flown out to some big studios for interviews, but my lack of professional experience seemed to hold me back from getting a big studio job. Just when I thought things were doomed, I got a call from 2kSports/Kush games in LA. They flew me out for an interview a couple weeks ago, and I ended up getting the job. Im moving to LA next week. Im extremely excited. They told me I'll be mostly doing character textures, and stadium modeling/texturing. You can check out their (our =) games at http://www.2ksports.com
Probably not a career job (I want to eventually create and evolve my own stories), but certainly a great start!
Anyone in the LA area want to get a beer?
My name is Artacus

gratz on the job.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon
Big Congrats, and damn they have an NBA license that is the real deal, I am very happy for you oh Sparty Ranger

Great news, Sparty!!! You have been busting yours and LR's balls for a long time. I am happy for ya, bud!
Whereabouts in LA will you be? Most of us that have lived or currently live in the area can provide you with good info (housing, bars, restaraunts, etc.). I also have a good friend at The Secret Lab(Disney) who is a TA and has worked with Maya extensively--he may be able to help you out as far as how to get by in that industry.
Drop me a PM for more info.

"2k sports is a good company to work for, I think, but you will hate your job by january. I used to know the guys that started visual concepts pretty well and they were all really great people"
Thats pretty much what I'm expecting, though I don't think I'll be tired of the job until around a year. I just view it as a learning period. Like I said, or maybe I didnt, this is just a stepping stone. The goal is to move up to film and do character design/story telling. I landed interviews with a couple film studios; Nickolodeon and Critterpix (http://www.critterpix.com), but neither hired me. So, I think once I have some experience under my belt, that film job will happen.
Also, I just started working on my first short film, which I know you guys will love. Its a lot more of my old humor =) I'll definately keep you guys and gals updated on that.
The studio is located in Camarillo, which is about 45 miles N/NW of LA. Kinda inbetween LA and Santa Barbara.
Thanks everyone for the praises.
FYI: Little Rico (LR) will be coming with. He is started a new porn series where he shits on ladies. Cool huh?!

Camarillo is what I would call an up and coming city. Some nice areas, some not so nice. Some new communities there too. To have any kind of fun, you'll either head to the coast, or head down the 101 toward LA/Hollywood. Not sure how you are for cash/living arrangements, but I'd recommend looking for an apartment in any of the following cities: Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Newbury Park, Agoura, Calabasas, Oakpark.
I'd personally recommend the Malibu Canyon Apartments in Calabasas. They're pricey, but the location is perfect for living in a quiet, safe place with great accomodations and still being able to drive over the hill into the valley/LA/etc.
I grew up in Thousand Oaks, and lived in Calabasas for the last several years so I'm real familiar with that area.

Congratulations on your job, Artysp! I look forward to seeing what you work on!http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/12/13/news_6114977.html wrote: Five-year contract gives EA sole rights to the NFL, including teams, players, and stadiums. Take-Two reacts, calling it a "tremendous disservice to the consumers."
Electronic Arts has signed the biggest sports free agent on the market. In a devastating blow to competitors--and in a deal sure to reshape sports gaming--the software giant signed an exclusive agreement with the National Football League and the NFL Players Inc., a subsidiary of the NFL Players Association.
The deal, one EA admits to having lobbied for over the past few years, is an exclusive five-year licensing deal granting EA the sole rights to the NFL's teams, stadiums, and players. However, the publisher and Players Inc. denied a similar deal was in the works in May 2004, even requesting publications that ran the story run public retractions.
The NFL/EA arrangement encompasses action, simulation, arcade-style, and manager games made for PCs, consoles, and handhelds (both the DS and PSP, included), giving EA a firm hold on the football gaming market. The deal does not include titles for mobile phones or Internet-based games, but does include online features of consoles. With next-generation consoles scheduled for release next holiday season, EA looks to handily dominate the professional football market for the duration of the license.

And here I thought he was talking about a hand job.....
But on topic, anywhere in S.Cali is going to be a money sink, compared to what you are used to.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower

Gratz on the job, but sorry it's in the death-pit of LA. My wife used to live in Studio City, and all her friends lived in sherman oaks/thousand oaks/woodland hills...I hated that place. Now im waaay out in the inland empire (Claremont)
Traffic can make your morning commute into a living hell, so I recommend you live really close to work. You wont be able to escape traffic though, that are is the worst.
