Dystopia

Post by Sylvus »

Not sure if any of you have Half-Life 2, or if you play any mods for it, but a couple of my friends were part of the (fairly large) team that put Dystopia together. So far they've only just released the demo so there aren't many maps, but if you're into cyberpunk at all keep an eye on it.

It has your standard fps fare, pick a build (light, medium, heavy), a weapon, and customize it with implants (anything from radar scans and mods for healing yourself and others to Predator-like stealth mods or the coretex bomb that detonates when you're below 20% health). The interesting hook in this one is that there are terminals for "decking" (jacking, whatever...) into the network where you'll be in another world with different physics, a different looking avatar, and the ability to interact with the avatars of real-world objects in order to provide an advantage for your team. Capture turrets, spawn points, open locked doors... and you can even fight other "deckers" while inside the network to kick them out.

Just something I thought I'd point out to people... I've been playing for a week or so now, and it's pretty fun. I look forward to more maps being released.

Sounds cool. Can I come up and kill your physical body while you're jacked into the other world?

Is this an add-on mod to Half Life 2 (need to own original HL2) or is it using the HL2 engine and can be played as a stand alone game?

Yes you can kill my physical body while I'm jacked in. One of the sub-objectives that pops up for you when you get near a teammate who is in the net is "Defend your Decker" or somesuch.

And it's a Mod for HL2 that I believe requires you to have purchased HL2. From there, I believe Dystopia itself is free, at least this demo is.

Its in beta at the moment with only one map called vaccine. Ive played with it before, definatly interesting. I dont know the cyberpunk genre, but if you have ever played shadowrun, you will DEFINATLY notice some similarities. (cyberdecks, cortex bombs, data nodes)

The game is a objective based game. Your character has health, armor, and energy. Health can be restored with someone with a mediplant. Armor cant be restored and deteriorates with hits. Energy is consumed by using implants but regens. When in cyberspace, it is a pretty cool looking environment. You use your energy to do any kind of hacking. Whenever you meet an enemy decker, your shots drain his energy. When you run out of energy, you get knocked of out cyberspace.

There are different builds and such. The heavier the build, the longer the spawn time is added to everyone when you die. Lets say you are a medium which is 3 seconds i think. And 3 heavies die, which is 6 seconds a piece I think. So bam 21second respawn. Definatly encourages teamplay and using your lights and mediums.

Weapons are pretty well balanced. Nothing too overpowering, and they are all worth it. None of them are very unique so if youve played an fps, youve probably have used the guns in this game. Ive seen screenshots of this game with vehicles in them, so those might be comming in another map soon.

In "Play Games", scroll down to "Third Party Games". If it is not there, Try making a shortcut with

Code: Select all

"E:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game "e:\program files\valve\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\dystopia"
as the target. And

Code: Select all

"E:\Program Files\Valve\Steam"
as the "start in". Not sure if thats possible. Dont have any experience making shortcuts like that. Make sure to have the right hard drive letter
