Back to the Moon in 2018

Post by Winnow »

I wonder how many people would have guessed it would be 46 years between manned moon landings back in 1972. I remember all the visions of manned Mars missions in the 80's. Starting with the Challenger explosion in 1986, things took a turn for the worse with respect to manned missions.

I'm all for spending 100B on this as long as they stay focused.
NASA unveils moon program
By Kate Tobin
CNN

(CNN) -- NASA Administrator Michael Griffin rolled out NASA's plan for the future Monday, including new details about the spaceship intended to replace the shuttle and a timeline for returning astronauts to the moon in 2018.

The design for the new crew exploration vehicle (CEV) looks a lot like the Apollo-era spaceship that first took NASA to the moon a generation ago. It is a similarity that is not lost on Griffin.

"Think of it as Apollo on steroids," he told reporters at NASA headquarters in Washington.

Under the new NASA plan, a "moon shot" would actually require two launches, both using rockets derived from shuttle launch hardware.

One unmanned, heavy-lift rocket would transport a lunar lander plus supplies and other equipment to low-Earth orbit.

Afterward, a second rocket would carry a crew capsule capable of transporting up to six astronauts into a similar orbit. The two would dock with each other, and then head to the moon.

The first few missions are planned to put four astronauts on the surface of the moon for a week, while the unoccupied mothership orbits overhead. Once back in the crew capsule, the astronauts would return to Earth, with the capsule parachuting to a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in the California desert.

Griffin said the total cost of the program spread out over 13 years will be $104 billion in 2005.

"Unless the United States wants to get out of the manned space flight business completely, then this is the vehicle we need to be building," he said.

"And I don't hear anyone saying that the United States would be better off being out of space, when other nations are there."

He also dismissed speculation that federal spending on clean-up and rebuilding along the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina might eat into funds that would otherwise be earmarked for the space agency.

"The space program is a long-term investment in our future. We must deal with our short-term problems while not sacrificing our long-term investments in our future. When we have a hurricane, we don't cancel the Air Force. We don't cancel the Navy. And we're not going to cancel NASA."

In the wake of the shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, NASA officials announced that the agency intends to end the space shuttle program in 2010.

The CEV is expected to be ready for test flights around 2012. In the meantime, NASA intends to launch robotic missions to the moon in 2008 and 2011, to scout possible landing sites.

Unlike the spacecraft of the Apollo era, which could land only on the moon's equator, the new lunar lander should be able to set down anywhere on the moon's surface, NASA said.

NASA scientists said a landing site at the lunar south pole might be of particular interest because previous studies indicated the presence of ice there.

One goal of future moon missions will be to learn how to "live off the land," using the hydrogen and oxygen from water ice as well as other compounds from the lunar soil to make rocket fuel and other "consumables" necessary for long-term space missions.

Griffin on Monday did not lay out a timeline for the construction of a lunar base or a manned mission to Mars, both of which have been included previously as part of President Bush's "vision for space exploration."

He did indicate, however, that both of those activities remain on the table, to be pursued as the budget allows.

The moon money will be all used up after Katrina and Rita.

It's also a lackluster, limp dick goal.

Woohoo for 1 trip 12 fucking years from now... go fuck yourself Nasa.

Yet another reason to hate liberals.

I was a high school freshman when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. There was a very real sense that space travel would become commonplace in my lifetime.

Ted Kennedy would rather throw the money away on crack whores.

I am all for the space program but NASA is a broke dick. This is WAY too much money for one trip. I am hoping that one of the private space companies will beat them there at a fraction of the cost. The whole space program system from NASA to Boeing and other vendors is just too expensive for the public to accept this kind of expenditure. There is too much waste for technology that is 10-20 years old by the time it is used.

NASA was done when we beat teh Ruskies. theres no drive for us to "be first on the moon" like there was in '69. so who wants to spend all that cash to go hit a golf ball on teh moon, cause you know, thats all there is to do up there. No malls, no night clubs, no intraweb. Man the moon is really kinda boring.

Bullshit.

The moon, like Earth, and the rest of the Universe is a fucking thrilling unbelievable place.

If the USA didn't spend 100 billion dollars + for stupid wars or fund Israel we may not be playing catch up on our own past.
To simplify why man wants to explore space to what you just posted Noysy is stupid man, just plain stupid.

I do agree that Nasa needs a serious overhaul, although I am constantly amazed by their work anyway.

We still wouldn't be going to mars or the moon. The U.S. had a space race with the russians. It was a competive venture, and more healthy then building up nuclear arms. The american public has lost lots of its interest in space since the break up of the ussr.

The gubmint killed the space program. Seriously. Back in the 60's, NASA was willing to take whatever risks it took to get to the moon; money, machinery, lives, whatever. Now we're SO concerned with every life that everytime something goes wrong, the whole fucking program shuts down, which in turn fucks the budgest, which brings more scrutiny, ect.

Of course, it doesn't help that NASA's internal culture has become the #1 obstacle to innovation and that their safety requirements have almost nothing to do with practical safety, and everything to do with CYA.

IMO, we need to return to the cowboy days. I'm sure there are still a few people with the balls and desire to ride a rocket into orbit, and the risks be damned.

For those mentioning the space race with Russia, China has replaced Russia as our competition. They will rule the spaceways if we don't kick it up a gear. China is in the mode the U.S. was back in the 60's.

that was the general idea of the post. To be stupid. Because the general population (wich generally is what controls such expenditures, even indirectly) is also stupid. What does exploring the moon do for Joe Shmoe in Kentucy? I think he'd rather get his welfare check...

We'd be better off spending that money to develop software that can translate your incoherant ramblings into English

JFK made a pretty good case back in the 60's. Though some parts are dated, it's still a pretty good case.

I don't post to get any of you fags to laugh along with me, thanks. I'm also 100 percent sure every word I typed was english, no one mentioned anything about grammar. And exactly who was trying to emulate me? If you're going to try to sass me about spelling and grammar and what the fuck else, atleast make sure yours is tip top :)))):):)

Way to grasp for straws though, idiot.

All I did was make an obviously retarded comment to parody Metanis' clueless and completely retarded omg another reason to h8 liberalz cuz they r keeping us out of space fuk u kennedys post.

Point: It is fucking stupid to bring up your cockthirsty partisan neocon faggotry into a thread about fucking space development.

I think Google earth shows quite clearly we arent exactly near to filling up the planet. yes, someday maybe the population may outstrip the available resources on the planet, but thats A LONG way off...

its just not cost effective to use space for anything other than satalites atm... we will be living on space stations long before we need to colonize the moon or mars....

Nah, the moondoggle exists only to be cut from the budget, so the administration can claim to be cutting things from the budget. They should have said the moondoggle would cost $100 Billion per year, so it would look like they're "saving" more money.
