The Exorcism of Emily Rose
All I have to say is, go see it. Go see it at night with a near full theater. The girl that plays Emily Rose.. great acting. I loved the movie and am recommending to to everyone.

Not looking too good!
Personally I think all horror movies are a waste of film.

It is the rare horror film that meets my approval. An example would be the movie Alien. It's officially categorized as a horror movie along with Sci-Fi and Thriller. Alien had the intrigue of a developed plot beyond the typical hack'em/slash'em templates. Still, Aliens > Alien
Anything else that is borderline entertaining probably leans more toward the thriller/suspense category than horror.
You can't really compare the two as they are totally different movies. Alien was a horror/thriller movie while Aliens was an action/suspense movie. I could see where most people like Aliens more since it was faster paced.Winnow wrote:I'm inclined to acquiesce.Aslanna wrote: Personally I think all horror movies are a waste of film.

Event Horizon was pretty good, up until the end when it totally fell apart into a stereotypical horror movie. It had a lot of potential, but was doomed from the start with Paul W.S. Anderson directing it. He's also the man you can thank for the train wreck that was Alien vs. Predator. Supposedly Andrew Kevin Walker (the guy that wrote the script for "Se7en") did a re-write of the Event Horizon script (uncredited), but a lot of his stuff got cut in editing, curious what the movie would have been like using his script and a better director.
Also...supposedly there is going to be a SE release of Event Horizon in 2006, I think. I'd like to a see an extended version of movie with cut scenes put back in, and not just the original movie with the cut scenes on a second disc, but I doubt that will happen.

I'm going by IMDB's categories. Aliens and Alien both have "horror" as one of their categories. A simple breakdown of the two movies would be Alien is more suspense/horror while Aliens more action/horror. Aliens also has great one-liners which adds to its longstanding appeal.Momopi wrote:

While Alien/Aliens may have horror elements I personally don't put it in that category. It's more Science Fiction for me. When I think 'horror movie' I think Friday the 13th and the like. Those sort of movies I just never enjoyed and don't see what the appeal is. But hey we're all unique!

Okay my wife and I saw this movie just about an hour ago. It is a decent flick to watch, and it rehashes the dead horse level arguments about religion and still manages to be watchable.
I would not have picked it, but I am not unhappy that I decided to see it.

The original Alien was a horror movie, it just happened to be in a science fiction setting. The second one was action. I would put the John Carpenter remake of The Thing in the same boat, personally. Both films represent the best the whole Horror genre has to offer, in my opinion. The first Pet Cemetary movie, Hellraiser, the Robert Deniro Frankenstien, Devil's Advocate, and the 1980s Invasion of the Body Snatchers are also pretty solid horror movies.
Slasher movies are not really trying to scare you as much as they are playing into camp, so I don't lump them into the whole Horror thing. That is not to say they can't be fun to watch. Dusk til Dawn and Dead Alive are movies I always try and catch when they pop up on TiVo.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower

The best part of this movie was that it was based on a true story.. the second best was the possessed woman's acting. I much prefer her acting to what was done with Linda Blair in Exorcist. That never scared me, or even looked like anything more than a kid in makeup.
As for the movie itself, wait for DVD. It's not scary though there might be a spot or two where you jump, not out of fear, just out of sound/visual popping up. It's not a bad movie, but not a great one either.
