Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Holy shit this game is awesome. I've played a little bit of the first from the series on emulators, but this version for the Nintendo DS is fucking great. It blends balance and strategy exceptionally well. The graphics are fun and they use both of the DS screens with great results. You can fight on 2 fronts this time, using your buttons to shift between the top and bottom screens. In the meantime, the top screen displays unit properties and map info, while you use the touch screen to move units and issue commands.

It rivals Shining Force and Vanguard Heros in addictive gameplay. Both of those games were similar in the turn based genre. Actually, FF Tactics was the last great example to use in terms of gameplay. So, if you like those games, pick this one up. You will not regret it.

Thanks for the review.

My son loved advanced wars on the emulators like you said, and he has been eyeing this one. Will have to keep it in mind.

As an update, this game is harder than most turn based games I've played. The computer AI does not go easy on you, and I don't believe there is a way to change the difficulty at all. At most, I've had to redo missions once or twice, but it's part of the learning process. The larger battles can take hours and one little error can cause your entire strategy to fold in on itself. And remember, if you make an error, the computer will exploit it. It's a constant full court press the entire time your playing.

You can also make your own maps and share them with friends. They DL them via wireless coneection. You can also go head to head vs. people (max 8) via wireless connection or tag battle vs. the computer AI. All in all, there's an aweful lot of replayabilty and diversity in this game.
