Homework Help

Post by Kylere »

Okay so my oldest step daughter was giving an interesting assignment today. She has to pick out one song that represents a core democratic value such as truth, justice, liberty, freedom, diversity etc.

Also she has to design a CD cover to "sell" the artist, song, and idea. Part 2 is easy (hell my wife makes money as a graphic designer), but part 1 is a challenge for a few reasons:

-Most political songs that are positive in nature are from 100 years ago
-Her teacher (gotta be a repressed wannabe A&R twerp) specifically gave Marley as an example so they goes Bob and Ziggy, because 30 6th graders means 20 of them will be using them.
-Come on it has to be a little cool, and I already thought of Schoolhouse Rock stuff, and have it all but you know, there has to be better
- Most modern political songs are from bands that forgot they are musicians first, like U2.
- Oh yeah and to add to the difficulty I will have to edit the track it it has swearing and same with the lyrics sheet and censorship makes me feel bad inside.

I can think of thousands of protest songs, or songs of disillusionment... unless it is some god awful sell-grandmas-shotgun country song like "Proud to be an American." Any suggestions from the mostly free and diverse VV crew?

Umm Nilaman I am not sure it will work, we live north of the mason-dixon line.

heh, I would hope my step daughters never have to deal with anyone who thinks lines like Merle's are a good thing, I mean sheesh,
I wish Coke was still cola and a joint was a bad place to be.
It was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.
Before Microwave ovens when a girl could still cook, and still would.
Is the best of the free life behind us now and are the good times really over for good ?

Blasphemy! There is no better than Schoolhouse Rock.

U2 has always been political. Perhaps for them that's just as important as being 'musicians.'

I keep trying to figure out a way to make Alices Restaurant fit into the theme of the assignment, in the hope that your stepdaughter could somehow trick them into trying to play a song in class that goes on longer than the class itself... :P It does involve the draft, if that helps?

For people that have never seen the full lyrics of our (U.S.) national anthem:
Star Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Pick one of the easy songs and get over it.

This assignment is bullshit, and so is your step child's teacher. Basically she's forcing the kids to love america, and then telling them to try to make profits off of it. Training today's youth to encourage what it's country is doing, regardless of how inhumane and devious it may be. Total crap. Get her fired.

Yeah I'm overreacting, but I don't care.

I thought the teacher was showing how commercialized our country is, and to demonstrate that, gave the kids this task as a way to show them how social norms and values can be packaged and sold. Kinda funny, since my take was the exact opposite of yours.

Best song for this project would be "Bulls on Parade" by Rage Against the Machine! Although Kyoukan's song was also appropriate :)
Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
I walk tha corner to tha rubble that used to be a library
Line up to tha mind cemetary now
What we don't know keeps tha contracts alive an movin'
They don't gotta burn tha books they just remove 'em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as tha cells
Rally round tha family, pockets full of shells

Rellix,

The last time I checked, which has admittedly been some years now, the motto of the National School Board was: Education through democracy, democracy through education.

I wish I could have skipped K-12 and just started with college. Other than learning to read or write, most of the first 12 years was a waste of time.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

While I agree with most of k-12 being silly, Noel, you prove yourself to be an ignorant fuck by tossing out the ability to read and write as being a minimal skill, but considering your command of the language that does not surprise me.

Toby Keith and Willie Nelson - Beer for my horses
Artist/Band: Keith Toby
Lyrics for Song: Beer for My Horses
Lyrics for Album: Greatest Hits 2
Well a man come on the 6 o'clock news
Said somebody's been shot, somebody's been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn't get too far yeah
They didn't get too far

Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street for all the people to see that

(Chorus)
Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune
We'll all meet back at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
We've got too much corruption, and crime in the streets
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down
You can bet he'll set 'em down 'cause

(Chorus x2)
hehe, must be something I got from my mom when I was growing up, because I can't get enough Willie :P

Completely agree - most of it really was a waste of time. I did use the time to make some lasting friends... oh wait, we all went to different colleges. Thanks public school system!

Like a single god damn thing you've ever posted on these forums was worth a shit, but I'll get to that some other time.

I agree with the idea that they should learn how commercial America works, but I don't think they should be taught how to exploit it. Sure, that's how our country is run now, but why should we keep forcing our kids to live it out? So "Dad" can retire off his son's ill-achieved wealth?

Furthermore, what's this shit about "They better be trying to teach the children to LOVE AMERICA!" - are you off your meds? Sure, encourage it to an extent, but don't force them to find a purely America-Loving song and sell it. Let them make up their own minds and form their own opinions about their country. Let them find their rebellious songs if they want.

If I were ever forced by a teacher (or anyone for that matter) to "love" America or pay consequences (in this case a grade), regardless of my opinion towards the country, they would get a nice little request to back off. That reminds me, back when I was in high school, a teacher yelled violently at a class (and particularly at a specific student) to hold hand over heart and say the pledge.

He was fired.

I'd have to say most of the time spent in school really was helpful. Its around 9th or 10th grade that it starts to get pointless. I had maybe 3 or 4 classes after 9th grade that actually taught me something useful.

American History (10th grade) learned quite a bit about life from my teacher, but really not too much history, in 10th grade, Chemistry (11th), Math in Society (11th) which mostly just taught me how to balance a checkbook and how credit works, and Government\Economics (12th) because my teacher made like $100,000 a year or more on a teachers salary and military retirement through the stock market and renting out houses he aquired over the years.

I liked K-12. I didn't like Engrish class. It conflicted with my immigrant parent's broken English. Public school was fun. I can't think of any reason at all why I'd want to have skipped all the stuff I did while in K-12. I probably had more fun during early years of school than in College. Or maybe it was a different kind of fun because then it was mostly stuff I wasn't supposed to be doing while in College I'd come of age etc.

Take a song with nonsensical lyrics and interpret them to fit your needs.

i would pick bright eyes 'when the president talks to god,' specifically the performance from the tonight show.
When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?
despite the stupidity of the song, the mere fact that he can write, release, and perform the song on national television is a testament to creative and artistic freedom.

ps fuck conor oberst.

If I was president,
I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...
If I was president

An old man told me, instead of spending billions on the war,
we can use some of that money, in the ghetto.
I know some so poor, they use the spring as the shower,
when screaming "fight the power".
That's when the vulture devoured

If I was president,
I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...
If I was president...
If I was president...
If I was president

But the radio won't play this.
They call this rebel music.
How can you refuse it, children of moses?

If I was president,
I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...
If i was president

Tell the children the truth, the truth.
Christopher Columbus didn't discover America.
Tell them the truth.
The truth
YEAH! Tell them about Marcus Garvey.
The truth YEAH! The truth.
Tell them about Martin Luther King.
Tell them the truth.
The Truth.
Tell them about JFK

If I was President
If I was president,
I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...
If I was president
