Where's the threads? Where's the compassion?

Wheres the outrage over the lack of money other countries are saying they will give us to help?

- There is a thread in general discussion already

- Yeah it sucks that all that shit was destroyed, but people had ample time to get the hell out of the area.

- The US isn't a 3rd world nation. They have the resources and infrastructure to recover.

- It's really only been 2 days since it happened. Hell, most people didn't even hear about the Tsunami until a few days after it happened... and it was over 4 days before there was even a VV post about it. The outpouring of aid/support took weeks.

- Why would other countries give aid to the richest most powerful nation on earth? The losses suffered from this hurricane are not even on the same scale as the tsunami. 300k deaths compared to a few hundred (maybe a thousand?)? Americans have insurance, people living in 3rd world countries don't.

Nice to see that you're still living in your own bizarro fantasy world, Mid. :)

Hey, Mid, how's that decision to take a job with a long commute looking this week? What, you should move? Hrmmm, I think I remember mentioning that.

Canadian officials have started getting ready to send whatever type of aid the United States requires to help with the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan said Wednesday.
American officials are still assessing their needs, but in coming days Canada will be prepared to send everything from water purification systems to the Canadian military's Disaster Assistance Response Team.
Officials in McLellan's office said there had been no official request from the U.S. for help.

Apparently the Americans had it coming: "The American president has closed his eyes to the economic and human damage that natural catastrophes such as Katrina -- in other words, disasters caused by a lack of climate protection measures -- can visit on his country." Who wrote this? None other than Jürgen Trittin, Germany's minister of the environment.

At a moment when the dead on the Gulf Coast are still being counted, the German minister of the environment could think of nothing better to do than -- in an essay published Tuesday in the center-left daily Frankfurter Rundschau -- to blame the US itself for the catastrophe. The piece is 493 words long, and not a single one of them is wasted to express any sort of sympathy for the victims of the storm. The worst of it is that Trittin isn't alone with his cold, malicious tenor. The coverage from much of the German media tends in the same direction: If Bush had only listened to Uncle Trittin and signed the Kyoto Protocol, then this never would have happened.

Bullshit. Trittin's article is a slap in the face to all the victims. Let's just assume that the environment minister is right, that there is a direct relationship between greenhouse gases and Hurricane Katrina. Even still this would hardly be the time for yet another round of America bashing and finger pointing. Three years ago, just before the US election, former Minister of Justice Hertha Däubler Gmelin compared US President George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. This time, with German elections looming, the environment minister is using a natural catastrophe as an excuse to once again campaign with subtle anti-Americanism and to unabashedly pat himself on the back. A "Kyoto Two" is "desperately needed" screamed the headline over his insensitive attack.

There are scientists and Nobel Prize winners who see the problem of global warming totally different than Trittin. Many consider the fight against AIDS, hunger and malaria as higher priorities than a reduction of carbon dioxide output. Last year, some of these experts jointly published the "Copenhagen Consensus," in which they outlined the greatest problems facing the world. Global warming figured low on the list. And believe it or not, the scientists are not on the payroll of the Texas oil industry. But that's hardly the point at the moment. Right now, the situation calls for empathy with the people in the American south who are suffering the after effects of the massive storm.

It's not the American people's fault that the storm hit and they couldn't have stopped it. The Germans, on the other hand, could have done a lot to prevent World War II. And yet, care packages still rained down from US troops. Trittin's know-it-all stance is therefore not only tasteless, it is also historically blind.
Not that I don't consider G Bush an enemy of the environment but still...

Source? Not that I don't believe the quotes, just curious.

I'm not sure what a listing of threats rated by urgency/immediacy has to do with anything, but increasingly violent weather isn't a reason to upgrade global warming's rating, we can deal with storms. It's also very hard to rate a theory (global warming) v's a fact (malaria/AIDS), regardless of how compelling the data may be to some people.

Food and water and stuff like that I can sorta understand. Although that shows very poor planning by those who chose not to evactuate. Anyway, things like department stores, jewelry stores, etc. are a different matter. People who loot places like that should be shot regardless of how high the water is.

Do you think you'll find many buyers for a TV within a 20 mile radius of New Orleans right now? You could probably barter for more with a box of candy bars than a 50" Plasma TV.

Do you honestly believe that someone out looting stuff, within hours of their city being flooded, is thinking about using that TV to trade for food? I sure don't. We're not talking about 3 weeks after the hurricane hit. We're talking the very same day!

Most likely those people doing the looting and such had no means to evacuate. They started this with nothing and will end it with nothing.

(Our friend Pat Robertson in 1998)
People make fun of and ridicule others on this board often who speak about their beliefs or of names in the news (Pat Robertson). But I sometimes find it hard not believing when reading things like this or the following, which was spoken July 22nd by Kim Clement:
Enough of past curses reminding you of yesterday’s failures. Enough of New Orleans and its treachery. Enough of stealing the Ark of the Covenant from my people just because you had those surrounding you that had no faith. Caleb said we are able to take this land. Joshua said we are able to take this land. But ten voices arose against the Lord God. And they would stone my servant Moses and say let us stone them and raise up another leader so that we may go back to Egypt. Would you go back to your dung? Would you go back to your vomit?

O New Orleans God speaks to you from Houston tonight and says enough of this! For a judgment is coming says the Spirit of the Lord, and I will take the men that have stood in faith, raise them above the flood that shall destroy those that constantly bicker and stand against my servant Moses, or my servant Bilbo. I want you to understand there are great men in New Orleans that have faith but you have been set aside not to lose but to win. Enough of this! For I will take the curses and the bodies will even rise and they will come forth on the water, but I will keep you and the stench of death will only last a few days. And then what I promised two years ago will come to pass for August, September and October of this year I made a promise it would happen, and God said be strengthened now, be strengthened now for enough is enough says the Lord.
