Pierce Brosnan's done with Bond
Fifth 007's services no longer required, he's told

NEW YORK (AP) -- A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its August 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."

Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners -- which I loathed -- and I always felt phony doing them."

He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador."

"(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time -- it certainly wasn't planned."

Thomas Crown Affair was really better than I thought it was going to be. Rene Russo was hot in this movie and looked really damn good naked.

They hadn't decided for sure until now. They expected that they'd be replace Brosnan, but they were still considering keeping him on for one more film.

Personally I liked Brosnan as Bond. He played the part well I thought.

They need a reuinion Bond movie.. bring back all the living Bonds in some sort of super movie. That'd be worth it just to have Sean Connery make another Bond appearance. And to make it an awesome movie, make sure that Timothy Dalton's version of Bond dies. Horribly.

Either that or Samuel Jackson as Bond..

Edit: Found it! David Niven:
During World War II he served in the British army, rising to the rank of colonel in the British Commandos and landing at Normandy.

He resumed his career afterwards with films such as Around the World in Eighty Days (as Phileas Fogg), The Guns of Navarone, The Pink Panther and as James Bond in the unofficial series spoof Casino Royale.

Exactly how much of Renee Russo do we get to see in the Thomas Crown Affair? Are we talking fur and early morning dew, or just a little nipple action?

If I remember correctly, it's bikini bottom only that she's wearing, but you get a good view, not just a quick passing clip. And as has been said, she's pretty good looking.

Anyone else think that "After the Sunset" is about as close as a carbon copy of "Thomas Crown Affair" as you can get? Not saying it was a bad movie, it was rather good, just very similar..

Interesting update. Given the information below, I think the next Bond movie has a distinct chance to sink or swim. I'll be following the casting and storyline with interest. Certianly more interest than any other Bond film I can remember.

There's just four months to go til production begins on "Casino Royale" and there's no new James Bond in sight, today though an interesting article in The Hollywood Reporter revealed a lot about all the political machinations behind the scenes about why certain names have been brought up, why many are no longer on the shortlists, and so on.

Seems much of the disagreement comes from different taste between Producers Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson who often don't agree with each other on the casting possibilities. One source close to the movie reported that Broccoli liked Daniel Craig, 37, but Wilson didn't. Broccoli also thought Hugh Jackman, 36, wasn't masculine enough. Colin Farrell, 29, was judged too much of a bad boy. Eric Bana, 37, star of "Troy" and the upcoming "Munich," wasn't good-looking enough. Ewan McGregor, 34, was too short.

Goran Visnjic, 32, did a screen test. Henry Cavill, 22, also did a screen test, along with 28-year-old Australian Alex O'Lachlan. Glasgow-born Ewan Stewart, 47, was reported to have tested for the role but did not, according to a Sony spokesman. With no pending announcement however none of these guys looks like they've landed it. That doesn't mean agents and actors aren't trying their hardest, although it may backfire on them - the rather public attempts of Julian McMahon, 37, already appears to have alienated the producers.

Clive Owen, 41, was approached by "Casino Royale" Director Martin Campbell but said he wasn't interested in the role and is now already committed to projects well into 2006. Campbell himself apparently "Wants to find a complete unknown, he wants to take credit for re-energizing the franchise again" says a source. There does seem to be a consensus to make him younger now, a Bond in his late 20's or early 30's who's just starting out, but the marketers realise the core audience is over 25 and don't want to risk alienating that.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this is all smoke and mirrors, and they wait until the first trailer premieres before anyone knows who it is. I should be in PR.

And Bubba. Casino Royale was not a Bond movie, as discussed earlier. It was the first ever Bond novel, whose name was stolen for the spoof. But it has never been made into a movie.

"Casino Royale" is the black sheep of the Bond films....You might say it's the older brother that no one ever talks about. The makers got the rights to the Ian Fleming novel "Casino Royale," and feeling it was unwise to compete with Sean Connery, they chose to make it a comedy instead of a serious action flick.
