Dungeon Siege 2

Post by Winnow »

I grabbed this one off the newsgroups to give it a go. It's ok. I like the first Dungeon Siege a little better so far.

The character creation and intro movies are the worst I've seen in awhile. I named my character Buttugly because nothing can be created that looks good.

The voice acting gives the impression that they forced everyone in the office building to say a few lines. Horrible voice acting and bad lines. If you grew tired of DS1 at the end, this isn't going to refresh your desire to play.

Verdict: Uninspired. Fun for free for a brief time or if you never played DS1. Not polished enough or entertaining enough to warrant spending $$ on.

I was disappointed with the first one, because it was so short. It took maybe two sittings to complete?

Yeah the first one I enjoyed, but again was too short as Adex said.

Wouldn't mind playing this one to see what it turned out like, but doubt it warrants spending $50 on by the sounds of it.

Guess I'll wait til it ends up in the bargain bins :P

First one was way too mindless for my tastes.

I disagree with some of the things said thus far about DS 2. Sure it is more of the mindless hack and slash game play that has been around for years now, but I still find the game inherently fun to play. I personally thought the voice acting was very well done. It can get a little over the top on occasion, but considering every line of text is spoken out loud, I thought it was put together very well.

Agreed on the character creation though, it is abysmal. Even though each class has several options of progression, it really feels like they need to add at least 2 more classes. Add to that the very limited race options (4?) adding up to a total of 16 different race / class combos. That's pretty pitiful this day and age.

The less-than-average character creation aside though, I find this game to be very enjoyable and the story line to be pretty robust. I like how they added much in the form of lore, while keeping all the back story related text short and concise.

The UI is very crisp and easy to use, and the controls (once you enable auto-attack) are for the most part very easy to get used to. I also found the different 'tabs' under your journal to be very helpful. They keep track of each quest you are working on in a very organized fashion, instead of just slapping page after page into a default area. Your journal also contains information about the different critters you have encountered so far, lore in the form of books or items you have picked up along the way, as well as around 40 or so tutorial entries.

I am interested to check out the multiplayer features as well, I need to find some more people willing to join a game sometime (no love for gamespy).

I would give it another shot Winnow, it's a better game than I initially thought as well.

*edit*

found a couple decent reviews on IGN also agreeing this game to be better than expected.

I respect your opinion but to me, Dungeon Siege 2 fails to live up to the standards of today's games.

I loaded up Guild Wars (no subscription fee so similar to DS2 and same price) and couldn't help but notice every facet of the game is better from graphics, sound, character animation, character creation, cut scenes, storyline, gameplay, quests, UI, all the way down the list to pantyshots.

In Guild Wars, after several months of not playing, I was able to pick it up again and navigate through the game with ease while DS2's UI seemed clunky...the viewing angles and pathways to travel are forced on you.

Champions of Norrath would top my entertainment list of next generation Diablo clones with Guild Wars also presenting by far the most bang for the buck just outside the MMORPG realm.

DS2 also tops out at 1600X1200. It's playable, if a bit repetitive, but would seem to lose out to similar games in its class of games.

I bought this and was playing last night. I was enjoying the powers element of the game. I thought that added a sorely needed break from point and click. PM me if anyone wants to give MP a go.

DLed it last night, and am having a lot of fun with the single player. To me it's basically Diablo with more quests and a group/henchmen system. Can't play multiplayer over the internet though, as it's pirated. Oh well ;)

edit: Have to agree with the character creation though, it's pretty pathetic in that department! And the character models for the players are just terrible!

I bought the first one recently, and couldn't get myself to play past the first dungeon/crypt area....
Diablo lite indeed. What a waste. DS2 is just not screaming "buy me" any time soon or ever.
