Kung Fu Hustle on DVD

Post by Fairweather Pure »

I picked this up and watched it over the weekend. I thought it was decent but a bit contrived and overdone, which was the definately the intent of the entire movie anyway so kinda hard to fault it for that reason alone. It had some genuine "laugh out loud" momments, but overall it wasn't too hilarious. The martial arts were good, but the whole concept of comedy/martial arts didn't congeal too well IMO.

6 out of 10. Decent but easily forgotten.

I loved it. If i wasnt laughing. I was going "holy shit that must hurt" The way this movie did the punches and kicks, you could actually feel the hits. I thought the fighting in this movie was better than any of the matrix movies. Which is one of the things that really annoys me about Yuen Wo Ping, how inconsistant his work is.

I disagree.
From the Matrix films to Crouching Tiger to the Kill Bill(s), his work has been very consistent.
I think with Kung Fu Hustle, he had a lot more creative freedom, which is maybe why you enjoyed it more. I loved the 'burly brawl' parody.

Stephen Chow is a slapstick genius.

holy shit that must hurt
Like when the Beast punched his head into the floor?
oooof!

The fight scene with the 2 dudes playing that stringed (harp) instrument was brilliant.

Actually, on the extra features there is an interview with Stephen Chow. He said that Sammo Hung did some of the fight choreography (like the sparring with the 3 old warriors), but Yuen Wo Ping did most of it. Yuen even plays a part in the movie. He is the bum who sells the Buddha Palm Technique book to the young Stephen Chow.

Actually, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo directed the Burly Brawl parody and the fight scene with the 3 masters vs the 2 harp players. As far as I know, Yuen Wo Ping did the choreography for every fight.
