Who's Going Deer Hunting?

No holds barred discussion. Someone train you and steal your rare spawn? Let everyone know all about it! (Not for the faint of heart!)

Who's Going Deer Hunting?

Post by Bubba Grizz »

Not a hunter personally but I live in a state where they close schools for deer hunting. Just curious if this is a common trend around the country.

Quite a few folks around here hunt. Opening weekend there is hunter orange in about every third vehicle you see.

This is my time to take a break. I hunt with a longbow. Our season stops for the ten days gun season is open. I can't hit the ground in front of me with a gun. Everyone is safer if I take those ten days to sit back and relax with the kiddies.

of the people wearing orange, only 1/3 of them are hunters, the rest are locals who don't want to get shot.

Seriously... its the big, dumb, cityfolk who don't know what a friggin deer even looks like that I'm afraid of. I really hate it when they come into the woods with their huge guns shooting at whatever moves. That's why the local folks wear orange, they're afraid of the stupid city folks.

You be jumping to conclusions fairweather about Toshira's comments methinks.

I'm not a hunter, nor will I ever be... but peppered deer jerkey is definately the win!!

My mom is a teacher in a rather hickish school district.. she says she has a lot of students "absent" during hunting season - though the schools remain open.

i love venison.

and since we've killed most of the predatory mammals out there, somebody has to cull the dear population for their own good.

i'm not gonna go shoot any, but i'll buy some meat off the ones that you hillbillies do.

The big thing here in Wisconsin right now is the CWD, Chronic Wasting Disease. No one wants to hunt deer that they can't eat but the only way to get rid of the disease is to kill the deer that have it. So they have this whole zone in the sw part of the state where they say, "if it's brown, it's down". They gave out extra tags and are letting them kill basically any deer in sight.

There was a big news report about how many hunters are going to donate the meat they get to food pantries and charity organizations. I found that to be kind of funny in a way. You are too afraid to eat the meat yourself but you have no problems giving the meat away for others to eat. Maybe deer aren't the only herd being culled here.

The other way for Wisconsin to get rid of CWD is to stop putting out bait piles.

Sorry Bubba, but that's the reason your state has such a problem with CWD. Deer congregate over a bait pile of apples or whatever, do what deer do and pass the disease through bodily fluid exchanges.

We had a real small hit of it two years ago. Didn't last, and we didn't lose 1% of the herd.

I grew up in Michigan (Sympathy checks can be mailed to my paypal account) and Deer Hunting Season was a great time, most of the drunks and dumb fucks were out of town. The fathers left their daughters at home, and the mothers were off with their boyfriends, so every teen guy had a much better chance of finding a willing chick with a warm house.

Not to mention that in the times I have been in the state during the hunting season since, lots of women are out hunting their own game while their shoprat loser husbands wander in the woods.

I grew up in a rural area and used to hunt but have given it up. I love wild meat and just going out to wander in the bush but expense of the tags, the cost of ammunition and just the general PITA of legally owning/storing/transporting a hunting rifle in Canada have all discouraged me from doing it any more. The comment about locals wearing orange to not get hit isn't as far off as some may claim: there are a lot of idiots who pop off shots at any sign of movement, including just the freaking sounds.

People shooting at vehicles, trees, and even pumpjacks on oilwells (the pumping things that go up and down on em) are all common targets, not only of vandals, but for clueless fucks who think they are John Wayne or Rambo in a warzone. I have nothing against many hunters, but there are too many people that ignore the fact that their firearms are not toys.

Well, normally it's a general indifference, leaning toward dislike. However, this weekend I'm going to Columbus to witness the true test of who is, in fact, the better state. In that spirit, I have to hate you guys, at least until the Wolverines dispatch of the Buckeyes on Saturday.

Sylvus,

Well I may LIVE in Ohio, since Michigan has elected idiots again and again and along with the UAW they have removed any real job base from the state.

However my preferences are Michigan, Michigan State, Big Ten, then the rest of the losers.

Yeah I know about the Baiting. They have since made it illegal to bait deer but some people do it anyhow. Personally I think if you are baiting then that is not really hunting. It is like using a fish finder while fishing. Rather weak. I think if you are going hunting you shouldn't use a rifle or a bow but you must kill the deer with a knife. Now that is hunting. Or even better, you have to wear antlers on your head.

ummm...I grew up on a 100 acre farm out in the middle of nowhere (plays Deliverance music) in Minnesota and have seen an odd deer or two, and yeah, actually, when my dad walks the half mile to get the paper at the end of the driveway, he wears blaze orange so he doesn't get shot by some moron who can't distinguish between bipedal creatures and deer.

thanks failed assumption flame.

and (!) don't fuck with me or I'll get Xan to have some of his air force buddies come borrow my Benelli semi-auto shotgun or my .380 Browning and shoot out your knees. jackass.

I hunt Polar Bears with 2 Wiffleball Bats wearing a fur coat with raw meat hanging off it. Im a REAL man. I dont need no pussy ass 'guns' to hunt and take down my prey.

Sometimes when Im feeling frisky I hunt Black Bears with a couple of rocks.

Anyone who hunts with guns is a pussy.

PS: heheh seriously though. The only 'hunter' I truely respect is a well taught bow hunter. The rest are pussys.

And I went out tonight and tied orange vests on all four of our horses, just in case.

I think most hunters are fulfilling their passive aggresive need to assert dominance over something in their pathetic lives, so they big up their 30 caliber penis extenders and go out to blow holes in the most harmless animals they can find to insure that it doesn't, or even better, can't fight back.

Although I have it under very reliable sources that the deer are stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.

:( I dread hunting season, my brother and dad purposely get the deer tags or whatever , then they kill more than allowed so they make me go to that stupid hunting store and get it tagged (you know the guys have to know I didnt kill it) and it is horrid when they ask me shit I dont know like how many lbs or whatever type of bow thingy i used.

To top it off going to my dads to be greeted by a deer who has been sliced open hanging from its neck in his fucking tree..well ughh /gag
It really scares my friends who werent exposed to this shit before.

I dont mind people hunting, I do my 'once a year- hit a deer' deed every year..fuckers you should be able to shoot as many as you want. Im sure the car insurance company agrees ><

Just start answering with Everquest statistics! Just say "well, I used to use a Trueshot Longbow, but now I use Rain Caller because I can use a Fire Strike charge to clear an area if another hunter tries to train me. Plus it has STR and DEX bonuses, which can really make a difference when you pull multiple deer. I typically use a Class 1 Medium Nock Bone Point arrow, but on larger game I find I need at least a Class 1 Ceramic Hooked arrow."

I couldnt remember that, Ill just tell them I refuse to give him my l33t stratz on deer hunting.

I just try really hard not to look disturbed while surrounded by animal heads and men with blood on them telling '12 point buck stories'.
I could join in with the story about the one time my brother and his friends talked me into shooting a bull with a bb gun..or I could just show them the scar I have from running and trying to dive over a fence to avoid the enraged bull.

Then again, it could be that most hunters are honest enough to realize that the plastic-wrapped meat in the store didn't fall off a tree somewhere. Amazes how many peopl will gobble down a steak then berate someone for shooting a wild animal.

I QUIT hunting...

Post by Ahmik »

I don't hunt anymore... I stopped about 12 years ago.

I was pulling into the woods back in 1985 to park. I'm standing at my tailgate putting on my BRIGHT ASS GLOW IN THE FUCKING DARK ORANGE COVERALLS and all the sudden -- WHAM! WHAM!

I look at the left side and see a bullet hole on the truck box right above the rear tire... Hmmm where is the second impact? I look around on the other side (Crawling in the dirt by now) and I see another hole in the cab right by the passenger side window (6 inches above the gas tank)

2 bullet holes in the side of my truck! Here is the most fucked up part! One was from the LEFT and one was from RIGHT!

HOLY SHIT! I jumped up plastered my hand on the horn and made as much damn noise as I could... these fuckers come running out ALL PISSED OFF that I was gonna scare away the deer!

I showed those fuckers the holes in my truck and they both said "I didn't do it"!

Well, ummm gee whiz Mr. Pro-fucking-fessional Hunter! Ya suppose they appeared magically? 2 gun shots, 2 bullet holes, 1 hunter on each side of me?

Hey you guys realize that you almost shot each other? Damn good thing that just happened to pull up in my Mobile Body Armor I guess huh?

Gimme CASH and I will kinda forget all about.... "Huh? Oh hey there Mr. Conservation Officer! I didn't see you approach"!

Anyway, the Game Fish & Parks guy saw the whole thing... he was about 600 yards away with a spotting scope.

These Hero's went to court..

The guy on the left was a "Local" and lost his hunting license for a year, and got a bill for bullet damage ( and a TRASHED reputation around town).

The guy on the right was from IOWA! OMFG RUNNNNN!!! He lost his ability to hunt in South Dakota for life and also got a bill for a bullet hole. Yay.

After that I quit hunting and started drinking a lot instead.

BTW, on my way to school today I saw an Albino White-Tail deer about 12 miles south of town -- I'lll try to get a picture of that rare bitch if I see her again.

The comedy lies in the fact that I didn't even mention anything about how it's inhumane or that killing animals is wrong. I just said that you (oops, I mean hunters) probably have a small penis and overcompensate your cowardice and impotence in real life by shooting harmless animals at 200 yards.

ALMOST HAD ME THOUGH. NEXT TIME IF YOU'LL JUST READ WHAT I SAID YOU HAVE A SMALLCHANCE OF COMING OFF LIKE JUST A RETARD INSTEAD OF A STUPID FUCKING RETARD.

Grats you reading comprehension, dumbass. First thing I posted was that I suck at shooting a rifle and never use one.

killing animals is wrong
And grats again for taking two totally different positions on the subject in consecutive sentences. Not to mention diggin up a week-old post to attempt flaming something you know jack and shit about.

You know, I do not care if the thing has horns the size of New Jersey, unless it was shooting back, this is not a contest of skill.

Now if the deer had platforms with autotargeting, orange vest sensing M16A2's hunters would impress me to no end. Let's face reality, very few people are hunting for food, because the cost of a weapon, fuel, food, transportation, clothing, deer slaughting, etc would buy the same in steaks at the local grocery chain.

People hunt for a thrill, not for any other purpose. I have no problem with that, I just have a problem with people that try some envirobullshit about culling or some foodbullshit. I still think most hunters are fucking cowards, if you want to hunt, join the military defend your country, and you will get a shot at hunting people that shoot back. Shooting a deer with a 20X scope from 100meters is about as impressive as managing to hit the ground with your piss.

another thing...

What is more cruel?

Shooting a deer with a bow from 50 yards and chasing it for a bit? (me)

Shooting a deer with a .30-30 from 80 yards in very dense trees and chasing it for a bit? (me)

NOT shooting a deer and watching it slowly starve to death because there was a terrible drought this summer and the entire bottom 2/3 of the state are a barren wasteland of scorched earth?

If anyone wants to debate the issue of hunting vs. non-hunting I suggest that you have a visit with your local conservation officer. Here in South Dakota it is the Department of Game, Fish, and Parks.

These guys are well versed on just about every argument that has ever been brought up on the subject.

Since some of you may not be aware of this, all of the states regulate animal populations by altering the number of licenses that are issued each year. This year they are almost double of last year, simply because they don't want the deer to SUFFER a long harsh winter with NO FOOD.

Next year, there will be much fewer tags issued, thereby helping to increase the deer populations.

GAH! Some people are just so unreachable, and unwilling to even attempt to fully understand the flip side of an issue.

btw... in SD *Bait = Felony* it has been this way since before the '60s.

So when are they gonna start emitting licenses for people to start hunting the homeless?

I could use some bowhunting practice..

i think hunting just to put a head on your wall is kind of lame though.

I guess when all of the homeless shelters are closed... maybe.

BTW they obviously eat well there... fat kid that is sueing McDonalds aledges that he ate at McDonalds for 3 meals a day for 2 years straight while he was a resident of a homeless shelter -- this is a non-issue.

If we didn't have a hunting season here in Wisconsin then no one would be able to drive. Everyone that I know has been hit or had a near miss with a deer. The DNR (Department of Natrual Resources) here issues more tags for hunting than could ever be used and the deer population continues to grow. They have been talking about extending the hunting season for a longer period to help cull the population down. Deer do an insane amount of damage to crops and private gardens every year. I don't hunt but I am glad whenever I hear someone else got theirs.

I say it should be open hunting year round. Maybe then there wouldn't be 250,000 hunters running around in the woods shooting each other or at shadows. My in-laws horse got shot one year and it was int eh middle of a clearing next to a barn. They have had shots fired into their house several times. Allowing year round hunting would curb this bloodthirstiness to shoot something and make things a hell of a lot safer.

If you're bloodthirsty to shoot something, than there's a lot of other alternatives I could think of besides letting you use a gun all year round.

And if you're into population control for safety reasons (which I am), I'd rather see it given to trained individuals in an organized manner, quick and simple; not some rampage of schmucks toting rifles firing at anything that moves.

I just said that you (oops, I mean hunters) probably have a small penis and overcompensate your cowardice and impotence in real life by shooting harmless animals at 200 yards.
The info below is from 2 places..1 being a state 1 being my county.
Look at the # of accidents in Hamilton County..make 6 of them mine, 1 of them my friend who was killed after hitting a deer, and the rest for hurting other people and their cars...even if everyone lived..its a fucking car/motorcycle that you had seriously damaged over a "Harmless Animal"

Last year this lady around here hit a deer, it flew up on her windshield, busting through and kicking her in her face until she died. I assume her husband who had to see that shit doesnt think that deer is harmless in any form or the woman who had to feel that before she died.

I dont like hunting, I like shopping but I wont knock a hunter for keeping our roads clear. If you actually look it up, there are more people who are more car accidents involving deer than there are deer killed by hunting every year.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but saying that they are "harmless" is 100% untrue. (see below if you want a lil proof)

The Insurance Information Institute reports that nationwide there are more than 500,000 deer/car collisions each year re sulting in more than 100 deaths, thousands of injuries and millions of dollars in damage.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has been taking deer/vehicle crash reports about every other day for the past month. Since 1989, more than 5,300 deer have been hit in the county.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has issued an advisory urging motorists to drive with extra caution through December. It estimates more than 25,000 vehicles will collide with deer statewide this year.

Nowhere in Ohio are deer killed more often than in Hamilton County, which had 724 collisions last year — 61 more than the next closest county.

Deer-vehicle collisions in the state accounted for more than $71 million in insurance claims in 1999, the institute says. Losses in Hamilton County were more than $1.8 million.

Some 3,634 deer were struck by vehicles last year in nine Southwestern Ohio counties — a 15 percent jump over the year before, numbers recently released by the Ohio Insurance Institute show.

The AP reviewed state Transportation Department records of deer crashes investigated by law enforcement officers from 1997 through 2001.

The review found there were 100,485 vehicle-deer crashes, which killed 32 people and seriously injured nearly 2,000. Twenty-two of those killed were on motorcycles.

The accidents involved 151,371 people, nearly equal to Green Bay's and Eau Claire's populations combined, the AP found.

The AP's computerized analysis of more than a million DOT accident reports and DNR deer records from the past five years found:

--The number of deer-vehicle crashes ranged from 19,177 in 1997 to 21,299 in 1999, which represents a 6 percent fluctuation from the five-year average.

--The deer herd size ranged from 1.2 million in 1997 to 1.8 million in 2000, a 20 percent fluctuation.

--The number of deer killed by hunters ranged from 362,975 in 1997 to the national record 618,274 in 2000, a 32 percent fluctuation.

The "natural" deer count per square mile of woodlands is supposed to be in the vicinity of 20 deer per square mile. The current estimate in southwest Ohio is roughly 200 per square mile. Because of anti-hunting nuts and uneducated people, the deer population has exploded out of control. I understand that Wisconsin has had the same troubles. They are giving out tons of extra permits this year and for the next several years to try and bring it under control. The chronic wasting disease (which I understand is very similar to mad cow) is a threat to destroy the deer population.

Now since the natural predators are pretty much gone from most areas, you have a few choices. Let the deer die to disease, let the hunters kill them and stop whining, set up bait and slaughter them with a few professionals, or raise large packs of mountain lions and turn them loose in the suburbs and hope they only kill the deer. We really could clean the gene pool out if we just banned grocery stores and fast food places. You people sometimes amaze me.

As much of a joke as you're trying to make with the mountain lion/deer example, I just got back from Hawaii and they used that mentality, albeit with smaller animals. They had a bad rat problem in Oahu and tested that a mongoose would hunt the rat in a closed environment. Completely ignoring the fact that rats are noctural, they released mongoose on the land. Since both move about at different times, they never run into each other. Now Oahu has both a mongoose and a rat problem.

Edit: and this sorry Mr Wizard moment is brought to you by my 100th post

Yes undeniable proof that deer are a danger to society.
