2005 NFL Predictions!

Post by Shanter »

It is time once again for all of you fooootball experts to put your analysis' to the test! Last year I predicted the right two teams in the Superbowl (Philly vs. NE), but picked the wrong team to win it all. Post whatever kind of prediction you want: breakout player, disappointments, playoff teams, etc.

I'll start with this:

NFC Playoff Teams:
Atlanta Falcons
Philadelphia Eagles
Carolina Panthers
Green Bay Packers

AFC Playoff Teams:
New England Patriots
Pittsburgh Steelers
Cincinnati Bengals
Indianaplis Colts

Super Bowl: Atlanta Falcons vs. Indianapolis Colts
Winner: Colts

Breakout Player: Rex Grossman
Disappointment: Joey Harrington/Carson Palmer (I know I'm going to eat these words later)

The Detroit Lions will make the playoffs.

You heard it here first!

I cannot tell you who will start at QB the second game of the season though.

Woo! The Cardinals are getting a little respect this year...or is this just a ploy to stop me from making a season long thread for them?

Arizona was competitive in almost every game they lost last year and they've made all the right moves in the offseason to win those close games this year. Some keys:

-Kurt Warner has got to play at least average football and Boldin, Fitzgerald and Bryant will catch the balls.

-JJ Arrington has to stay healthy. He's legit but we have nothing behing him. Shipp is on and off the injured list.

-The Cardinal cheerleaders need to wear outfits that show cameltoes

----

I like Detroit this year (liked them last year but they were still a year away). Kevin Jones is going to have a monster year and hopefully Jeff Garcia is the QB by week two. He's a comptetent QB and will get the ball to the big time receivers. I think Detroit will be the equivalent of the Phoenix Suns though as they have no defense so look for high scoring games.

This is the year the Patriots slump. Tedy Bruschi was a huge part of that team and now Ted Johnson retired as well. That's two key linebackers. Combine that with two new coordinators and the warning signs are there.

Brett Favre will miss a game

The Chargers will have another good year and maybe make it to the Superbowl.

Neither T.O, Moss or Harrison will lead the league for WRs in yards or TDs this year.

Superbowl

Chargers 27 NFC Team 21

I see a lot of parity this year. No clue in the NFC.

Randy Moss will improve the Raiders offense but he will not make them a contender. They may scratch at the playoffs, but they're still the same shitty team as last year plus Randy Moss and a backup running back. If Randy Moss is really good enough to turn a team from crap to contender, then he doesn't deserve any of the shit he's taken these past few years. If LaMont Jordan breaks out and really performs well, that could make the Raiders good enough to remind everyone of one of those bizarre Mike Martz teams that scores 500 points and only wins 8 games anyway.

Playoff Predictions:

NFC East: Philadelphia Eagles
NFC North: Minnesota Vikings
NFC South: Carolina Panthers
NFC West: Seattle Seahawks
Wild Card: Atlanta Falcons
Wild Card: New Orleans Saints

AFC East: New England Patriots
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens
AFC South: Indianapolis Colts
AFC West: San Diego Chargers
Wild Card: Jacksonville Jaguars
Wild Card: Pittsburgh Steelers

I think the Panthers will be good. I don't think losing Muhsin Muhammad is too much of a blow for them. His production last year was inflated by being the only option for a good quarterback. Steve Smith should come back and play well this year, and Keary Colbert will just get better, and the Panthers offense shouldn't miss a beat. Their defensive line, if healthy, is just impossible to deal with. If the Panthers stay healthy this year, they should be one of the NFC's Super Bowl contenders.

Without seeing some pregames to judge where teams offenses are going, I will base my picks on last year's defenses and offenses...

AFC Championship
Pittsburgh d. Indy

NFC Championship
Philly d. Atlanta

Super Bowl
All PA superbowl, Stillers over Iggles.

I'm going to go with New England being a disapointment this year...most likely a season like they had in 2002. Also, I see The Deadskins also having yet another lack luster year because, while they have one of the greatest head coaches out there, I still think they plan on running a simple, and outdated, offensive scheme.

any of you people who dont think the Falcons are gonna win the NFC south are crazy.

If the Falcons have some wide receivers who can beat a 3rd string cornerback, we might be in business this year.

Pherr: I think that's very possible but I don't think it's particularly meaningful. These are the teams that had a solid number one running back throughout each week of the season:

New England Patriots - Corey Dillon (1,635 yards, 15 games)
New York Jets - Curtis Martin (1,697 yards, 16 games)
New York Giants - Tiki Barber (1,518 yards, 16 games)
Washington Redskins - Clinton Portis (1,315 yards, 15 games)
Cincinnati Bengals - Rudi Johnson (1,454 yards, 16 games)
Green Bay Packers - Ahman Green (1,163 yards, 15 games)
Houston Texans - Domanick Davis (1,188 yards, 15 games)
Indianapolis Colts - Edgerrin James (1,548 yards, 16 games)
San Diego Chargers - LaDainian Tomlinson (1,335 yards, 15 games)
Arizona Cardinals - Emmitt Smith (937 yards, 15 games)
Seattle Seahawks - Shaun Alexander (1,696 yards, 16 games)

That list includes every single back who started the season as the number one back, finished the season as the number one back, and played almost every game. There were a few tough people to discount: Kevan Barlow, who missed only one game but was demoted to backup late in the season, anyone from the Atlanta Falcons, based on their dual-back running attack, and Fred Taylor, who racked up 1,200 yards despite not playing 15 games.

Anyway, the point of this discussion kind of dissolved. I was going to say that LaMont Jordan rushing for 1,200 yards doesn't constitute a particularly good season on his part, and, while I still agree with that, I think it's pretty clear that a back who plays 15 games and rushes for 1,200 yards would be an enormous improvement over the combined 752 yards the Raiders got out of Amos Zereoue and Tyrone Wheatley last year. So maybe that will help them out.

I'm posting this anyway because I think the list is kind of interesting.

Ricky Williams misses the first four games due to drug suspension. The Dolphins scrabble a bit and go 2 and 2 in his absence, including one low-scoring game won by the defense and special teams.

Ricky comes back and the Dolphins go on a tear. Ricky runs for 1,800 yards and 15 touchdowns in only 12 games. The Dolphins go 11-1 with him, and finish 13-3, including a big win in Foxboro. They're the number one seed in the AFC playoffs and there's no choice but to give Ricky the MVP.

Sueven was on drugs when he wrote that. How could you not put the Bus on that list? He started 8 games last year and racked up 941 yards! He looks to be the openeing day starter this year as Duce will miss 4 weeks due to a minor knee surgery.

The list was only of backs who were the number one back for 15 games during the season.

Second and third to Ricky Williams in the MVP voting will be Brian Westbrook and Terrell Owens. Donovan McNabb will have another good year, throwing for an assload of yards and touchdowns as his team wins the NFC East, but he'll slip a bit. His completion percentage will slip to 58, and he'll throw a few more interceptions than last year. But Westbrook will run for 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns, and catch passes for 1,000 yards and 6 touchdowns. Terrell Owens will amass 80 catches for 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns. Westbrook and TO will split the Eagles votes, allowing Ricky to capture the MVP.

AFC
East - New England
South - Indianapolis
North - Pittsburgh
West - Kansas City
WC1 - Baltimore
WC2 - Jacksonville

NFC
East - Philadelphia
South - Carolina
North - Minnesota
West - Seattle
WC1 - Detroit
WC2 - Dallas

Indy over Pittsburgh in AFC Championship
Philly over Carolina in NFC Championship

Philly over Indy in Superbowl

NE will squeek into the playoffs in an unexpectedly weak AFC East, and will finally lose to Indianapolis in a meaningful game.

There are 2 possibilities I forsee:

1. I will get the #1 overall pick in my money league, and draft Peyton Manning. This will result in him sustaining a season ending injury sometime in the first 4 games.

2. I don't get the #1 pick, and Peyton will break all the records he set last year.

Either way, I'm Murphy, and this is my Law

Hi, my name is Dennis Green and I do not know how to call running plays.....which is why I am no longer in Minnesota and have been relegated to Arizona. My protege, Mike Tice, learned from me and mimics my offensive plan which means both of us should be out of a job soon. No one will ever guess that we are throwing again!
