Eat it Europe!

The United States improved to No. 6 in FIFA's rankings Wednesday, the Americans' best showing in the monthly ratings by soccer's governing body.

The Americans, who will play in this week's CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals, had never been ranked higher than seventh. They were 10th last month, but passed France, England, Portugal and Spain to move within one spot and three points of rival Mexico.

Seriously, it's nice to see the USA becoming a bit more competitive in what is probably the worlds foremost sport. I'd love to see a Mexico-USA soccer rivalry turn into something that Americans would actually care about.

It's very strange to see the USA ahead of France, England, Spain, and Portugal. Of course, now we actually have to go and beat them.

i'm a big US Soccer supporter, but FIFA rankings have been always been a bit dubious.

The US is not better than England for sure, as England manhandled them recently in a friendly. France i doubt as well.

The US has beaten Portugal in major competition, so I'll take that. The US should be ranked higher than Mexico though, as they beat them in the World Cup, and have only lost somethign like2 of the last 10 times they've played.

but again, the rankings are BS anyways.

Explain to me how this should prevent me from desperately clinging to them?

Bah :p

Yeah the rankings have never really been all that great. That said, I'd love to see the US get more competitive (and see the sport become more popular here) in soccer. A GOOD soccer game can be very entertaining and the more competitive teams the better.

That said, no way I would rank the US above England or France. Although France is entering a bit of a generation change they still got the good guys there. And Portugal always falters in championships heh.

The monthly rankings are rubbish. I'm allowed to whine about this because the Danish national team has dropped a few ranks. Why? Because there haven't been any games scheduled since May, and in the meantime, that powerhouse of soccer Iran has played a few games against the Azores and Vatican city or something and gained 'points' for it.

The rankings mean nothing when the teams come head to head.
