Let the Sports Fans Rejoice!!!

The NHL has a deal!!! The suffering is over, especially north of the 49th.

Kinda sad they pissed away a whole season so that the players could eventually capitulate, but at least its back on. I am hopeful that some of the rule changes will add some excitement back into the game as well (although I still feel if they just called the penalties in the neutral zone as per the rule book they wouldn't need to do much).

May Zoocow weep for the Era of the Wings that is now passed... :p

What's an 'NHL'?

Note: I am not bagging on the sport of hockey, which I like, just on the idiots that destroyed the sport.

As far as the rule changes, I really hope they implement the tie-breaking shootout...I don't mind if they do a 5 minute 4-on-4 OT or whatever before it comes to a shootout, but just get rid of the damn ties. Ties are gay. In fact, just get rid of the whole point system for the standings....you shouldn't get rewarded just for making it to overtime.

That is one of the things talked about, going 5-on-5, then 4-on-4 then shootout. Along with doing away with 2 line pass offsides, widening the blue lines, being able to come back to avoid offsides, moving the net back (to have more skating room in front instead of behind the net), and regulating goaltender equipment size. There was also discussions about calling the stick/holding infractions tighter but it seems they always chicken out on this.

The lockout did a lot of damage to the sport and the league (Noel's comment reflects the feeling of a LOT of people out there) and I think the NHL and the players both realize they need to add some zip into the game because people won't come back to watch more Neutral Zone Trap crap. Hopefully it works.

p.s. iron man Joe Sakic > Peter Pan... er... Forsberg

I'm definitely looking forward to the rule changes. I think hope Hockey can recover and I hope that the NHL is never in a position like that again.

I really, really hope that there won't be so much homosexual grappling this coming season. Checking, passing, shooting, scoring: this is good hockey. Grown men hugging on ice is figure skating without the hawt wimminz.

I am glad that they have resolved some things and are working towards trying to revive the league. I am not a really big fan of shootouts, but at least they are making strides to cut down on the fluff that can happen when teams are rewarded for a tie game.

I am not wanting high-scoring games--just a sense of urgency from both teams trying to win[/] the game instead of settling for a tie.

With that said: Flyers '05-'06 ;)

FYI, the deal isnt done yet. They still need to vote, although, it looks promising. The best part of this is watching Roenick telling everyone he was right since Feb. Sure its ok to accept a cap, he made millions off the NHL.

Anyways, I'm glad the owners "won" and I use that term loosely. Some owners will come into this season well prepared (Vancouver, Washington, ect) while others not so good (Toronoto, NYRangers, ect). We will see lots of free agents this year and many will not find a home unless they take a massive pay cut.

As for the rule changes, I love the fact that they got rid of the red line. I really hated that 2-line passing bullshit. This should create more breakaways and thats a good thing ( not for goalies =p ). Some of the other changes are alright and are done for preventing injuries like the no-touch icing. Many careers or seasons have been ended because of this so I support this one.

The ones I don't support are:
- OT. 4-4 then 3-3. I just hate it.
- The shootout. It takes away from the game and the win (ie it doesnt become a team sport anymore).
- Larger nets. Its not official but lets not make things harder for the goalies.

The draft will be ineteresting to see. For those who don't know it will be a lottery. Penguins, Blue Jackets, Sabers and *cough* the Rangers will get 3 balls out of 48. Hopefully montreal will end up getting Crosby =)

Anyways, I'm just glad that the season will start.

The new agreement favors the Thrashers greatly i think. With Heatley and Kovulchuk being 2 guys they want to lock up forever.

....

maybe "lock up" is poor word choice to use with Heatley :p
