LIVE 8

Post by Tyek »

I put this in this section so it would get more attention then in the music section. This morning I got up to watch this on Mtv. I have fond memories of U2 taking the stage during Live Aid and realizing the full power a great band with stage presence can have.

30 minutes into the presentation I have seen about 5 interviews and about 5 minutes of music. Green Day is playing American Idiot in Germany, the crowd is getting into it and I hear halfway through the song..."well that was Green Day, we are back here with Jimmy Fallon, and they start interviewing this ACTOR on a day of music. So I listen to them babble and they talk about all the great collaborations going on, the Pink Floyd reunion, Coldplay and the guy from the Verve doing Bittersweet Symphony. They say "lets see one of those great collaborations, Travis and Bob Geldoff, I start watching and 10 seconds in they go to commercial."

So I turned the damn thing off, went to the car got my XM unit and am now enjoying channels of music with little or no breaks.

Mtv really blew this coverage big time.

Yeah I know, I feel stupid now. I guess I should have known. I bet the people at Mtv are trying to figure out how to slip another replay of the Real World into the coverage. They have only shown the first episode 10-15 times already.

I saw about 45 minutes of the VH-1 Coverage, and it's about the same "So and So is taking the stage - wow let's listen in...."

<one minute later>

"Here we are with Brad Pitt. Is it true this rock concert will eliminate third-world poverty?"

<mindless non-researched blather for 5 minutes>

"Off to London where someone I've never heard of is talking with Snoop Dogg"

etc.

In short - a waste...

I've been reading up on XM and Sirius. The programming seems to be better on Sirius but I've heard XM may sound a little better. I don't listen to Howard Stern but I guess he'll be exclusive to Sirius next year. The MyFi portable unit from XM is also better but I understand Sirius will have their portable model available by the end of the year.

What's the scoop?

The Sirius model records 'at least 44 minutes'..... The MyFi records at least 5 hours.. every sirius model is HUGE compared to any xm unit, and generate 2x the heat.

I don't see how the programming could be better on Sirius...

Just as real as Charlie Parker. Would you like to argue semantics over what is and isn't music? Hey, I think Green Day is horrid--but I don't like pop music. I also do not like country music but it is music--just of a different variety.

A great cause? Seemed rather pointless to me.

"We're having a giant blow-out rock concert simultaneously in 8 countries because we think this will make the G8 do something they might not otherwise do."

I guess it's more fun than throwing rocks at policemen at least, and definately more socially acceptable! :D

I'm not denying the issue of third-world poverty, and I believe Blair already made Africa the focus of the G8 agenda, but beliveing a jam fest will end poverty in the third world is like believing there will be peace in the middle east while Israel exists.

the concert is to raise awareness. I don't think anyone expects a rock concert to cure poverty.

africa has the resources and means to lift their own damn selves out of poverty if they wanted to. the G8 throwing more bales of cash, food and medicine at them isn't going to solve the problem.

Yes, I suppose we may as well just let the governments of our countries continue to fuck other people over (whilst rolling over and dying).

How do you know the new portable Sirius model records 44 minutes? I've seen no specs on it yet. It was my understanding that the second generation of hardware was going to allow their portable MyFi type unit to be smaller.

Is there info on the new Serius portable somewhere?

Raise awareness? ROFL

The only reason we are being made "aware" of Africa's poverty is because the residents are black. There are many poor countries all over the world, but we won't have world wide concerts for the white ones because Americans don't feel guilty about enslaving them.

The music is fine. The cause is fucking gay. Throw all your hard earned money at a government that gives two fucks less about its people. They will still be poor next year, next decade, next century until they actually care enough to do something about it. Money isn't the problem.

Thank you XM. I enjoyed an amazing day of music, regardless of the political value of it.

Pink Floyd sounded like they never left the stage, Sir Paul was amazing, U2, Green Day, The Killers and many many more. It was perfect. Mtv blew it big time.

The cause was awareness. Not for the political people attending the G8 conference, it was for the populations of those countries to push for the politicians to help them. I think it sounds like it raised awareness, I hope it helps, it probably will not.

Depends on how you define poverty. If you're using any sort of per capita measurement, Africa is almost certainly poorer than Antarctica.

In fact, if you're using any sort of per capita measurement, I imagine that Antarctica's population is far and away the wealthiest on the planet.

I had a buddy who use to live in Antartica. He froze to death. Do you know what I said at his funeral? I didnt say anything, because I didnt know about it. I didnt know that Phillip died until 8 years after his death. Why did it take that long to get the news back to me? Cause he was white, thats why.

And then it was, Sparty

with all that high dollar research equipment, antartica is a damn utopia!

as far as why africa is poor... the european governments have pulled out of africa as a whole recently (90's) and well. frankly they have to figure out how to run there own govt's from scrath with very little help from the US and western countrys that gave up on them after the cold war... in time it will all sort itself out. soon zimbabwe and ruwandan govts will figure out the big money is in cocain and it will be as wealthy as south america!!!

I turned on VH1, knowing that MTVs coverage would amount to Live 8 TRL Edition. When they cut to the talking monkeys halfway through "Comfortably Numb" I threw up a little bit in my mouth. Doesn't anyone actually LISTEN to the music anymore?
