Lately, I've been looking to play offline RPGs again too. These past few years, most of my game time has been spent playing MMORPGs, and I think I missed a lot of the good standard CRPG. The last one I played was Gothic II (recommended in this forum), and that was pretty fun. From what I've read on different sites, it seems like Wizardry 8 is supposed to be good. I think I'll be trying that next.

Wizardry 8 is a great game but it's turn based. You have to have a lot of patience to play it. Fights can take a very long time if you don't have your ae magic skills at a high level. If you are a hard core RPG gamer, I would highly recommend this game.

Gothic 2 is just bloody hell to find though. I been trying to get it for a while, then gave up, but this saturday i found it in a 10$ bargain bin in the local EBGames (who previously told me then didnt have it and couldnt get it, go figure).

RPGs-
The Bards Tale (Xbox now, soon on pc)- Action based, great story and humor
KOTR2- PC/Xbox Ending sucked, rest of the game was A++
Phantom Brave- PS2, Lots of depth, turn based tacticsish

My old school recomendation if you can locate it-
Tactics Ogre- PS1, Crappy graphics, but damn good game and long, reasonably difficult as well

Action/platformer Based-
Destroy all Humans- Xbox PS2, Mario meets Plan9
Psychonauts- Xbox, PS2, Great game, but kind of short
Conker- Xbox, old N64 game vulgar and funny as hell, has a Xbox live FPS mode added

My old school recommendation if you can find it-
Beyond Good and Evil- PS2, Awesome game that slipped under the radar, tons of story, humor and fairly long to complete, but not ever boring.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Meant to add-
I, personally, have been replaying the entire Final Fantasy series this year (including a half translated copy of 3) and I am almost done with 5 at this point, having started in January. Tactics Advance is great too, but its not very challenging once you get past a certain point in the game. One game I never get tired of playing, though you would struggle to locate a copy of it is Brigandine, sort of a turn based strategy conquest game with seven possible contries and 3 difficulty modes. I would recommend that game to anyone.

Hehe, funny you mention Beyond Good and Evil Jice. I bought that and Gothic 2 this weekend from a bargain bin :).

And i can only second Psychonauts. Its not released in europe though, i had to buy it from Doublefine (which netted me a signed Psychonauts, the soundtrack, and a DVD with all the cutscenes for 52$. 15 hours into it now, and still not done, just got past Milkman Conspiracy.

I am having a lot of fun with Psychonauts also.

Beyond Good and Evil as Jice said was a really good game that went under the radar and got missed by a lot of people.
