Batman Begins
Saw this trailer today. First off, the first Batman film was pretty cool. The rest of them got worse and worse and worse--relying on bigname actors (at the time) as oppossed to decent scripts or depth of story.
Batman Begins is pretty much a whole new ballgame and I think it will put the franchise back on the map, if that is the intention, anyway. As for the choice to play ze Batman, can't do much better than Christian Bale(American Psycho, The Machinist). That dude is a talented actor that has the physique to make a beefy batman.
I think what sold me on this is Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia), Bale and a much-needed insight into Batman's past. From the looks of it, this will be more of a gritty and quaisi-noir type of action film with a decent story.
Director:
Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Memento, Following)
Cast:
Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes,
Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer
Release Date:
June 15, 2005

I think Batman Begins will be a better Batman due to that it's for a more mature audience.
Seems darker (no jokes from a crazy Jim Carey riddler and Danny De Penguin didnt feel like a real villain etc) and no teen angst (from Batgirl and Robin).
The castmembers are more serious and more suitable for the roles as well.
Hopefully no one-liners a la 70's Batman either in this.
I had a hard time accepting Clooney, Kilmer and Keaton as Batman heh
Bale seems better!
Only gripe is the change of the Batmobile, but its more realistic.

It was pretty wicked and well worth the price of evening admission. Their were a couple cheese elements but for the most part the movie strayed far away from the one liners. Only major issue I had were a lot of the fight scenes weren't that great. But the way they played out Batman's Mythology and Christian Bale's performance more than made up for it.
Also, The Scarecrow was a wicked villian.

Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:

I loved both of the Spiderman movies and both X-Men movies, but Batman Begins was just too damned good. I went in with big expectations and it exceeded my expectations in many ways. Batman Begins is the best superhero movie so far and I think that says a lot.
That said I understand how someone could be turned off by the fight scenes, but I thought they were awesome and fit his ninja style...and the theme of fear very well. He is meant to not be seen by his enemies and not being able to see what is kicking your ass just adds more fear to the situation.

Awesome movie.
The story was extremely tight. My inner comic geek is very hard pressed to find a flaw or loophole that wasn't covered. The drug scarecrow used was absolutely bad-ass. Christian Bale was awesome as fuck. He had exuded "cool confidence" when he was both Bruce Wayne and Batman.
The stellar cast was, much like the characters they played in the film, true supporting players in the Batman story. No one took the spotlight. As a matter of fact, any unknown actors could've played the myriad of supporting roles in this film and you'd hardly have noticed. It wasn't like the old Batman movies where it was JIM CARREY PLAYS RIDDLER!!1! The actors involved were not there for thier star power, but for thier actual ability to act and play the selected roles to a "T".
Furthermore, it was kinda like seeing all these vetren actors supporting Christian Bale as an up and coming actor, much like thier characters supported Bruce Wayne. Sure, He's been around for awhile, but this movie will really launch him into the spotlight like never before.
Even Katie Holme's character was great. She wasn't some "flavor of the week" hottie thrown in as a love interest. She was hard nosed and definately played her part in the creation of Bruce Wayne's alter ego.
Overall, it was an extremely good movie. Better than I could've hoped for. The writers deserve huge accolades for presenting the history of such a complicated character in a timely fashion, using such memorable villians, and really creating a fantastic story with no loopholes.
As a movie, 9 out of 10. As a comic book movie, 10 out of 10. It really raised the bar.

Yeah, I enjoyed the majority of the flick. There were some parts I could have done without...but overall I will agree that it is up there with the better comic book movies, a la Spiderman I and Superman I.
[hide=question about the ending]So, my major question is this: When Gordon shows him the Joker card at the end, are they referring to the next movie, or are they blending it in with the movies that are already out? I really enjoyed the first Batman movie and did not think there is much wrong with it considering what comic book movie expectations were at the time...but I do hope they are not planning on re-doing Jack's role as the Joker...[/hide]

Time flies. He's really beginning to look like an "old man". Hyuck hyuck. Yes, I know that was awful.Ashur wrote:Gary Oldman as a GOOD GUY??
I can't remember the last time I saw that. He's my favorite actor by far.
EDIT: Just looked at his filmography. I guess I keep missing the films where he's not the bad guy, as he's done enough of them. I do recall Rozencranz and Guildenstern are Dead - great flick.

I was thinking it was pretty cheesy as well, but uh, it was probably just to keep people he knew from recognizing his actual voice. So it works.Kelgar wrote:He really overacted that part. Shades of William Shatner there.Kithyen wrote:I saw the 10min. preview they aired on the WB. Although I think Christian Bale's voice when he's in the badsuit was a bit cheesy, the rest looked extremely promising. I'm most definitely looking foward to seeing this.

This movie kicked copious amounts of ass. Easily, easily the best Batman movie ever. Christian Bale was phenomenal, Gary Oldman was fucking Jim Gordon through and through.
I think the thing that made this movie the best for me was the:
[hide]attempt to make everything something real. Batman was a real man, with real gear, and they did a fantastic job coming up with real gear and ways it could all work.[/hide]
Rumor has it that there will be at least two more movies, and Katie Holmes won't be in them because they got pissed at her for all her Tom Cruise/scientology bullshit leading up to the release. Given that I thought her acting was the worst in the movie... no big loss.
