System of a Down - new CD

Post by Leonaerd »

Their new CD is more of the same: lame lyrics, awesome instrumentals, awesome vocals. What amazed me about this CD is that their backup singer (I'm not sure if he's new or not) now has a much larger role in many of the songs. In their previous CDs, Daron (lead singer) was almost exclusively the sole vocalist, but this new CD introduces vocal harmony all over, and it is very, very well done.

The lyrics... oy. They sound nice to the naked ear, but once you take a look at the booklet to understand what they were actually saying, it's awful. Almost all of the songs' second verses are carbon copies of the first verse, and hardly any of the lyrics make sense. In one of the songs, the chorus says "It's a non-stop disco, betcha it's Nabisco, betcha didn't know," and is repeated several times. Don't get me wrong; it all sounds awesome, and if it was their intent to combine random words that merely sounded sweet, then they did so with flying colors.

My recommendation: If you're looking for "deep" lyrics and songs you can relate to, go somewhere else (Coldplay is happy and flowers and yum yum yay hooray). If you want to listen to a CD that rocks hard and scares old women, then this is it. If you like their old stuff, you will like this.

Daron is the guitarist and Serj is the lead singer. Daron sang a little bit on toxicity and steal this album, he sings a lot more now in Mezmerize.

I love the cd, wierd as hell but rocks too.

It's a 35 minute CD. I'm pretty dissappointed in System for that. They're releaseing a second album this fall called "Hypnotize" which will probably be the other half to this CD. What a fucking gay gimmick. I always thought System was above that type of thing...

Shorter CDs make for faster mp3 downloads!

My all time favorite album fits on an old school record (30 minutes). Not sure why length matters all that much. You can always drag out songs by repeating the lyrics over an dover and replaying the exact same part of a song over and over.

I don't care for these guys but I'll take a quality 30 minute album over extended crap anyday.

One of my favorite albums of all time is 21 tracks in 35 minutes.
Wire : Pink Flag

On thier first few albums they basically finished thier songs when they "ran out of words". In contrast to thier mid-career penchant for doing shit like a 55 minute album with electonic minimalist variations of one song (The Drill).
