On my computer I had been running Windows ME. A roomate of mine offered to upgrade it to XP Pro using this pirated copy that he had. So I upgrade my computer and it seems to work fine. Something I just noticed now is that Windows Installer doesn't seem to work. I also can't add/remove programs using the utility thing in control panel. It says something about not being able to access network location <Common Administrative Tools> .AllUsers\. As far as I know there is only one main profile on my computer and it has administrative access.

So I can't install any larger games or anything onto my computer or remove any older programs that I no longer need. Does anyone know how I can remedy this situation? Preferrably without having to go back to ME or to buy a legal copy of XP?

Hmmm, first off, grats for not running Windows ME OS anymore. That was a horrible OS for Microsoft.

Is Windows Installer some third party app or do you mean you just can't install anything as you normally would?

Windows ME is such a screwy version of OS that you may need to reinstall your games/apps for them to be properly recognized by Windows XP.

Anything you install from this point on should work normally using the add/remove program tool in the Control Panel.

If your friend didn't do it, you may need to change the product key in your pirated version of XP in order to get Windows Updates from the Microsoft site.

I can't install things as I normally could. Windows Installer is just the thing that all programs use to install their program. During installation I usually get a runtime error. I cannot install anything using the add/remove program. It usually gives me an error saying something about couldn't access Common Administrative Tools. Under control panel, I can't even get into Administrative Tools. This leads me to believe that whatever administrative access I had got messed up when I upgraded.

It's my understanding Aev that all pirated copies will not update, so in other words your system has a ton of holes you can't fix... cheap ass gnome, go spend the 50 bucks and get a real copy

There were issues with early versions of windows installers. I'd make sure the installer service is set to start automatically.

Might consider changing the key and making sure you have all the latest patches/updates etc. etc. If it is a copy of XP that doesn't have any patches/sp's applied, i'd get em upgraded.

Got my version to update fine.. Best bet is to change the serial key on your XP pro..

Windows Installer Service Cannot be Accessed

If you get an Error 1719 ("The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. You may be running in Safe mode or Windows Installer may not be correctly installed") when you try to install or remove a program, it may be because the Windows Installer files on your disk are damaged or missing. When this happens, you won't be able to install and remove programs that install as .MSI package files (such as Microsoft Office applications). If this happens, you may be able to re-register Windows Installer, or if that doesn't work, you may need to reinstall it. For instructions on both of these methods, see KB article 315346 at:

Might be a fix for ya
