I hate interviews, Part 2 (Progress)

OK, I stressed and sweated through 2 interviews via phone on Wednesday. Both of them went very well and both have gone to the next level.

Phase 2.1: WTF Financial-Senior DBA/Architect - 1 fucking hour phone interview on Monday or Tuesday. Dios Mio, 1 fucking hour on the phone? FFs.

Phase 2.2: WTF2 Financial-Senior DBA - On-site interview for sometime next week. OK. I like face-to-face interviews. Not sure what to expect though.

I hate interviews.

However, both positions are paying $$$ like 75-90K range. Fuck yeah if I pull this off....been sweating my ass off for only like 11 years ffs.

A 1 hour phone interview I wouldn't say is all that uncommon for scheduling for - if it exceeds the hour then you can pretty much be assured that it went decently at least. I know for the job I'm currently in the phone interview was close to 90 minutes long.

The only tips I can give you for something that long is make sure you sit someplace with all distractions gone - tv off, etc etc. It's just far too tempting to flip it on for background noise. That and take notes of questions you want to ask or things you want clarified or things that peak your interest. It helps you maintain focus during that time. It's definately not easy to focus when you're just on the phone. Oh also keep a glass or bottle of water with you there, as you'll need it if you're yapping that long.

I have been on hiring committees at my current job and the phone interview is usually 30-60 minutes. Most interviews go long because the candidates talk way too much. We had one candidate that just would not shut up and ended up taking 90 minutes for a 30 minute scripted interview. In most cases the interviewers want to finish as fast as you do. I am not saying to give one or two word answers to questions but when they ask for an example, only give one example not a half dozen. Also don't stare at your hands and fidget. If you are nervous then clasp your hands together tightly. I always focus my eyes on the person's forehead and change my target often from one side of the room to the other.

Hey if you want a DBA job back in AR let me know... We could easily get into that range for a good DBA AND... AND we have MORE data and more processing power than anyone but the Federal Gov.... would be a lot of fun

Not to mention the cost of living in AR is much cheaper than the West Coast... lots of good fishing close to Conway as well

My opinion has always been you aren't very smart if you aren't keeping your ear to the ground (unless of course you have your "dream" job - which is few and far between).

In the past 5 years i've switched jobs 3 times, just because i've kept my ear to the ground, and in the meantime, increased my pay by 33,000, and have a MUCH better and less stressful job than the past 2. Both jobs were good jobs, paid the bills etc, even paid pretty darn good to start with, but if I hadn't been watching for something new, I wouldn't have gotten the one I have today

In the IT field especially, it is often far easier to advance yourself in pay and job title/responsibility by taking a new job.

I can understand the question though Cart... with you working at Taco Bell, I wouldn't expect that to be common knowledge.

Great suggestions. I would also recommend a web site visit. You sound so much better when you have seen their site. Know there stock performance, really research the company. It sounds good when you say, "I noticed you have the 3rd largest market share of ..., what are the company plans to not only maintain, but grow that share?" When I do phone interviews, I find that I ask as many questions as they do, virtually none of them are about the financial package. I am not in that field so I cannot help with questions, but if you have some prewritten questions ready, then add more to your paper as they come up, the hour will fly by.

As for Cartalas statement about constantly looking for jobs, if you do a great job, others will notice your work and want you. I was LIFO'd out of my job 2 years ago during a massive layoff, and went on vacation for 12 days because I had 11 offers that same day. I have at least 3 standing offers if I ever want to change jobs again. (Sorry if this sounds like bragging, I am making a point here. I am sure many others here have similiar or better results) It is called hard work, and if you do not have those options it speaks more to you then to someone who has them. Try working a little harder, maybe you will understand it more if you have the options.

One more suggestion, get a headset for your phone. Do not sit the whole time, stand, walk around a bit. Studies show you sound more animated and sharper when you are standing then when you sit. I am not saying do this the whole time, just get up and move every now and then, they will not know and you will sound better.

Actually Taco Bell employees can jump into Blizzard Asst Community managers so it works for them too. Cart obviously doesn't work at TB, but I immagine his lifestyle to resemble the movie "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape".
