Battlefield 2

Post by Boogahz »

Can't wait for this one to come out. The latest video shows more ground combat (especially tank and armored vehicle) which is what I like the most from the Battlefield franchise.
Here's the link to the latest trailer:

When does that come out? I really liked BF1942 aside from the crappy performance issues.

lol. naw, the BF1942 engine is too dated. I want BF2, and it destrutable terrain! I want to roll up to a building with a sniper in it with a Brumbar, and blast the holy living jackass hell out of it.

they removed fully destructable terrain. Only certain areas are destructable now.. like bridges, which can be repaired.

The fact that they are making objects used as cover and concealment two different things is nice. No more hiding behind a bulletproof bush!

BF2 has gone Gold!! ( which means that the final code is being burnt to CD/DVD now and prepared for shipping )

Rumor from EA Australia is that the demo is done as well, and the EA corporates will give the go to release it late next week, probably on Friday.

Full version ships on the 21st of June, get your pre-order in now to get the free headset along with it.

My guild is going back to the FPS scene, most likely competing on TWL/CAL during the summer seasons. http://www.guildunknown.com

We could prolly use 1-2 more good battlefield players, if you want to try out come on over and let us know. Last season on TWL we climbed up to #6 out of 189 teams, before we had to pull out off the ladder due to lack of players, myself getting deployed to Iraq kinda knocked us out of commission. (That was Battlefield Vietnam)

i think ebumar is going to put it up on teguildwars.com.

Also, I'm not going to be home when the download completes (i got through on server 3). Plus, the bandwidth here isn't good enough (40kb/s) for it -- will take roughly 3.84 hours to upload at best.

You're better off elsewhere. :(

I'll check the newsgroups after work to see if anyone posted it there. That's usually the fastest way to get it and avoid overloaded servers.

I'm looking forward to checking this game out.

Battlefield 2 Demo is about half posted on the Newsgroups so far. Shouldn't be long.

It's being posted in alt.binaries.nl for those that don't have Super Search.

Ok, I was actually able to get the download right after my last post...all I can say is that this is definitely NOT just another version of BF1942. This is very good. I think there is only one map, but it has locations where all of the character kits come in handy. I messed around with the squad command interface, and calling in artillery is nice. I can see it being very useful in multiplayer (just tested single player so far). When they said that they improved the bots, they weren't lying. The weapons are pretty fun as well. Apparently you can kill people with the medic's paddles  I had a medic run up and Zap me!

I am going to have to mess with the game a bit more to get used to the interface. The way that the option bar was basically eliminated (changed to a kind of pop-up menu) makes for a better on-screen look. Oh, and TOW missiles are fun to try to snipe with :P

This game is pretty cool : )

I tried the assault package first and got worked. I found my calling though as an Anti Tanker.

I upgraded for Forceware 77.13 drivers for this game. So far pretty good. dissapointingly, the max res is 1600X1200 so cant get full 1920X1200 but I can see this game requiring some serious graphics power. I've got everything in high quality mode...there is medium and low so plenty of room to downgrade if needed.

If you don't have nVidia 68xxx's or ATI 800's, you may struggle a bit.

For those that have nVidia 68xxx cards, get the 77.13 forceware drivers. I read up on them and there was nothing but positive comments on them for 10 pages of forum posts.

This game requires the most strategy I've seen in an online game so far. Until I get more comfortable, I'm going to be firing LAW rockets at personnel and tanks. I got first place in the single player mode! (after being in last the first try with the assault weapon....lots of bodies in those vehicles I guess.)

Driving the vehicles isn't too bad. It's easy enough to jump onboard and man a gun while someone else drives just like Halo.

Fun so far. Heading back in to get a grip on things before trying live online.

If this is a coalition effort, there's no doubt they know I'm american. I'm using up resources like nobody's business. I had two ammo suppliers pumping me with rockets and I had to use them on infantry assaulting our position in between taking out enemy vehicles. It was glorious!

I climbed up on a train car while playing sniper but a tank spotted me and I had to jump off...the tutorial voice says "hit 9 to release parachute". hehe.

Great game so far. The special forces package looks interesting. I like the Anti tank but you run out of ammo pretty fast. Support is pretty fun...you are like the M-60 guy in 'nam laying cover until your gun overheats.

I tried to revive someone with the medic pads but a tank rolled over the guy's head while I was attempting it. He didn't make it.

The six different "classes" seem to all have uses. So far I haven't found it a good idea to stay on or in a vehicle for long. It's nice to be able to hop into the side of a troop transport and be able to fire out the side while riding along. This looks to be a great team game.

It's ridiculous seeing the "Runs best of an Nvidia" logo only to have it not support the Ti 4000+ series. Those cards aren't even that old.

Time flies in the graphics world. The good news is that both ATi and nVidia have cards due out very soon that double the speed of the current best cards (thanks to all the game console research advances)...so those 68xxx's and ATi800's will drop in price soon.

It's a fun game, but it's just BF1942 with better graphics and physics. I played the demo map about 10 times and it was already like I'd played it a thousand times. I had the same feeling like when I played the original to death. If it had at least 20 maps, I would buy it, but 12? I don't fucking think so!

It's true to life in one area. The Middle East anti aircraft weapons are complete crap while the Gatling Gun and rockets on the U.S. aircraft carrier work well.

One thing missing is Tomahawks. Calling in air support is nasty.

Working together with someone else is the only way to go. I teamed up with some guy named "Serge" and manned the top gun turret on a tank while travelling from base to base. It's a great vehicle to travel in as the top machine gun has the power to take out personnel and light armored vehicles while the driver concentrates on getting to the destination...or the top gun can add the extra damage to a tank after one hit from our main tank to finish it off. Arriving at the base, I'd jump off with the Sniper pack 500-1000 yards out while he overran the base, exited the vehicle and used his special forces C4 to blow up the key anti aircraft or whatever it was that gets you points while I picked off zee enemy from a distance.

If you play the Middle East...the best thing to do is assault the Aircraft Carrier (use the boat) by yourself or maybe with two people...if you can takeover the Gatling gun/Rocker launcher, you're in business. It can blast anything on the flight deck and the Gatling part has unlimited ammo.

The main thing I have issues with is the flying. I can't fly for shit. It seemed like the Halo air vehichles were easier to control.

Overall a really fun game for FPS. I played two days straight. I'd be my choice over Halo, Quake, Unreal, or any other game where you battle goofy looking monsters in whacky settings or robot looking humans due to spacesuit/armor. Gotta be careful not to run over your own troops through.

<3 the squads. <3 points for assists on kills and flag captures. <3 points for reviving fallen members, repairing vehicles, etc. I like how they don't take away from your potential point totals for playing support classes.

I haven't messed with the flying too much since I haven't hooked my joystick back up to my comp yet. I have flown as a gunner in all of the choppers though, and the damned blackhawk is NASTY with the right pilot. I had one basically keep my gun pointed straight down over a large firefight (64 players on server) and I think I racked up around 30 kills before they even thought about manning their AA to shoot us down. I gunned in the attack choppers, and they were nice as well. The TV Guided bombs take a little bit to get used to, and they are downright useless without a pilot that knows what you are doing. They have nice range if you get the right range and elevation. I think that most people are too used to just flying in close and taking out land units.

The Land units are nice, but the Anti-Tank weaponry keeps them from being as nasty as they were in previous incarnations of the Battlefield series. I think that I prefer the MEC APC over the US one, but this is only because the gun turret sits about 1' higher. A small profile is nice, but there are a few particular places I have found to park it and pop smoke while pumping rounds into US encampments leaving only the turret exposed. The limited visibility in the Tanks/APC's is one good reason to have gunners/passengers. The new "Spotted" command will actually put enemy units on your radar when they are called out if they are vehicles. I am not sure about infantry. Having a fully loaded APC usually means you can have 5 machine guns blazing out of the sides and rear of the vehicle as you man the turret.

I played on a couple servers that had some of the "global unlocked" weapons activated. They are pretty nice, but I did not see a true advantage to most of them. The Anti-Tank kit has a really nice repeating combat shotgun that tears through infantry when you're in-close. The Sniper Rifle was nice as well, and I found myself to be more accurate with it (and claymore mines are a blast when sniping from a place where there is only one ladder leading to your location ;) ). I am not entirely sure how the weapons are "supposed" to be unlocked, but apparently it was as easy as editing a number in an .ini file. The group running the server said that it was all over forums, so you can probably find them if you look.

Finding good players seems to be the hardest part right now. This has always happened with FPS's online though. You can always find the people with a lot of kills and what-not, but finding a real TEAM is nice. You can get different kits involved in a good squad and just tear the enemy up. I have mainly been playing a medic, so I picture my guy running around with a wild look in his eyes as he revives people all around him. The light machine gunners keep everyone's ammo stocked and can drop ammo kits for others to pick up. The Medic kit can also drop first aid kits. Each of these classes can also just hold a kit and heal/re-arm the people around them. The kits "reload" over time in case you have run out yourself. This is one way they cut out the multiple supply kits and first aid lockers from the previous games.

The only thing that I don't like is also the limited number of maps. The good thing is that the way they scale with the number of players helps to add a little to each one. Flags appear to be in different places even on the "same" maps.
