Tabbed IE available now

Post by Animalor »

The cool news is that MS released tabbed browsing for the current IE.

The Bad news is that it's bundled with the MSN Toolbar/Search

I really enjoy the MSN desktop search personally. The interface is really nice and it really beats using Built-in Windows Search.
You can also change the MSN toolbar to use Google for your web searches by going into the MSN Search Toolbar Options, Clicking on General, Chosing Other Search Service and putting in "http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=$w" (The $w is the variable for whatever you put into the search box).

You can setup a whole list my my-tabs that act as homepages and at a click of a button, they all open up.

I'll be giving it a whirl.

Figured I'd post a link so folks can go take a peek for themselves.

What a sorry-ass, really fucking buggy implementation of tabbed browsing.

I highly recommend you don't install this piece of shit software unless you can't live without tabbed browsing and haven't discovered Firefox.

Avant is a front end. Adds some functionality(like tabbed browsing etc...). Everything else uses the IE engine.

Yes. I know what it is. I like it better than the IE interface.

Firefox I still don't like. I have it installed but I seldom use it.

I love when people at work call me when they're working from home bitching that our Citrix isn't working and after troubleshooting I find that they're using Firefox.

I really really love it...

Closing one browser window often closes all browser windows.

The 'open links in new tab' option works rarely.

Right click to select open in new tab doesnt always give that option and when it does, it rarely works.

It shifts IE taskbar icons around.

I like tabbed browsing and how Firefox has it implemented is very slick. Microsofts implementation is piss-poor and buggy.

I see what you mean, every time you click on a new tab with this enabled, it reverts to off again.

This one works all the time for me so far.

Hard to explain. I'll give it a try.
On my task bar at the bottom, I have the icons for the open windows.
For example, my email is the first icon, my web based reporting tools are in the second window (usually use firefox as I have like 6 pages open for them) and various other apps along the taskbar.

I had a tabbed IE in th e second position and opened up a new browser window accidentally so I right-clicked on the 3rd icon to close it only to find that the window with all the tabs shifted to the 3rd position and (doh) leaving only the single browser window open.

Oooh.. I understand what you mean.

I agree with you guys btw on the delivery method of this. packaging it with all that software was purely an attempt to get people on MS Search.

Hopefully the IE7 implementation will be much more solid.

I can't get into tabbed browsing. I tried Avant but went back to standard IE. I just like having multiple windows open I guess and using the taskbar for my tabs.

I have my taskbar hidden on the left side of my screen and can fit like 20 or so things on it before it fills up. Easy access to Copernic is also there! Have I told everyone about Copernic? :!:

Right now I have 22 tabs open. And that's about the amount I always have. I don't like a cluttered start/task bar. Therefore FOR ME tabbed browsing it the win.

22!!! Do you save all those when you exit or do you never exit the browser?

Does having 20+ web pages put any stress on the computer? (I'm thinking about all the little java stuff and flash things, etc that might be on each page or large movie/images.)

One thing I hate doing is accidentally closing my last IE window before I've caught up on VV posts and losing the little "new" icons by recent posts.

I'm going to give Avant another go here soon and look at replacement desktops as well. Maybe there's something new out there.

I use firefox. It's totally fucking worthless and slow and buggy as fuck compared to IE, but I'm stuck using it because if I uninstall it, I can't re-associate URL links from other programs to open up in a different browser because firefox kills your fucking registry when you uninstall it. piece of shit. I am going to reformat my hard drive soon and never use anything but IE ever again.

I do exit out on occasion. Mainly because, at least on my system, Avant leaks memory now and then. So after a few days it's taking up more memory than it needs to be. Not a huge amount but gets over 300Mb at times. The good thing is I can exit out and it will save the tabs I had open and reload when I come back. Works well if it crashes too. Can't remember how many times I lost the pages I had open when IE crashed. And having a one button refresh (shift-F5.. Guess that counts as two!) for all tabs is nice for when I come home from work.

Nothing that I've seen other than the memory issue above. I suppose it could be related to java apps or something running as well.

Well it hasn't really changed all that much so if you didn't like it before you probably wont like it this time either. I'd install it at work if I could. I dislike using plain IE.

I took some time to look around for a tabbed browser with IE as its core.

I found Kopassa (edit: see comments on iRider later in this thread as well)

http://www.kopassa.com/kopassabrowser.htm

I'm liking how it handles the thumbnail tabs. The browser "feels" faster than IE. Maybe less bloated.

It also shares the same favorites directory as IE so any favorites you add using either browser will reflect in the other. That avoids the problem kyoukan mentioned in her post.

It looks like development stopped in 2003 on this one so that's a shame. It has some nice features. It's worth a look as it's free, small, and doesn't do anything bad to your computer. Takes some playing around. I like the thumbnail tabbed browsing (wish you could move the window to the side instead of top) but changed the thumbnail favorites view to the more common list view. You can click and drag around the tabbed thumbs to the favorites.

Kinda neat. Worth a look and I hope some other future browser project picks up Kopassa's tabbed thumbnail method.

I like being able to drag an entire category to the thumbnail tab pane and open all links in the folder at once directly to tab view.

Firefox:

A. Is specifically callled out as an unsupported browser and will not render my work's intranet pages. This is "a bad thing". I don't care that they've specically targeted non-IE browsers to make ineffective, it doesn't disturb my civil rights or make me want to fight the powers-that-be, it just made me want IE back.

B. Doesn't do anything (that I *care about*) that IE doesn't. Transparent PNG support? Who gives a shit. Fully compliant W3C support - whoop-de-do, IE works everywhere I want to go.

C. Doesn't work with Windows Update.

It's not a BAD browser, I'm sure it's fine for most people, but it's useless to me. I installed the MSN thing, turned off all the options except serach/popup blocking/tabbed browsing and set the search for google. I'll give it a whirl this way until the new IE comes out.

P.S. Kyo - I uninstalled the latest Firefox and IE seems to be working the same as it used to.

I found a tabber browser with images that seems to be supported and new.

iRider

http://www.irider.com/irider/index.htm

It's pretty sleek and also has the "feel" of being faster than IE. I really like the way it handles tabs. You can pin tabs and also in options select whether they are marked "read" between sessions...that solves my VV lost new icon thingies.

The favorites are handles well. There's quick access to them in full page display mode.

If you're a tabbed browser fan, you may like this one over Avant or at least worth giving it a spin for a day or two. It'd be nice to get some Avant user opinons. It also shares the IE favorites folder and is an easy install/uninstall with no extra crap. The reason behind that is it has a 21 day trial and then you're supposed to pay for it. With all the browsers out there, I'm not going to pay for one. I found the crack easy enough on the newsgroups if someone wants it after trying it out.

Kopassa is nice but needs support as it's too rough around the edges and a little buggy.

Edit: iRider has lots of shortcuts, etc. Might take a little messing around to get a feel for what it can do.

You can export your Firefox 'bookmarks' into an HTML file... under Bookmarks->Manage Booksmarks.... then go to the File dropdown menu in the new window and select export.

From there just import them into IE clicking File->Inport/Export

After finding out for myself that Internet Explorer 7 sucks and won't be something to look forward to, I began another search for a decent browser with tabs built on the IE 6 engine.

I finally found one I can switch too; Maxathon.

It's totally customizable and has all the features I wanted:

-tabbed browsing (very well done)
-nice RSS feed integration
-mouse gestures (extremely customizable)
-undo button (an easy access history type feature reopen recently closed tabs)
-URL Alias
-Super Drag&Drop (this feature kicks ass)
-Collector (functions like a tabbed clipboard to save stuff from various pages. Good for research etc)
-skinnable
-lots of community support with plug-ins and extensions

For those using Avant, this is worth a look. It's speedy and has no memory leaks. After a few minutes of customizing Maxathon to your preferences, (the noia skin is pretty nice) you'll probably decide to stick with it. I switched around some of the mouse gestures to make navigating the tabs easier and of course, made google my default search engine. I also switched the default to switch the newly opened tab from staying on current tab. I don't know why you'd want to stay on the same tab as a default unless you have a slow connection.

I'm liking the RSS feature. Some sites i really don't want to hit unless there's a news story I want to see. It's a fast way to see tons of news headlines in an organized way without wading through a bunch of web pages. Good use of the sidebar area.

Take a look at the newbie guide and spend a few minutes tweaking it. The name of it is lame but it's a winner!

IE7 is only so-so imo. Tabbed browsing I hardly use. As for RSS, I prefer an app that will scan all the feeds I wanna see and present them to me in 1 screen as opposed to me having to hit favorites for each feed I want.

Here's a list of known vulnerabilities with Firefox.

People are starting to look for the security holes in Firefox now and it'll be a matter of time before you start seeing more and more exploits for it.

Maxathon is the same as MyIE2 - they just changed the name a while back I think. Anyway, good program. I liked it better than Avant.

As Xou mentioned, it's MyIE2 with a new name and is an outstanding solution if you're a power web browser or just smart enough to want to make your browsing as efficient as possible by taking the time to learn a little more than pointing and clicking.

For those that go to VV and maybe eBay and that's it, don't bother. Others that may use the internet to actually research stuff from multiple sources may want to shave a lot of wasted minutes off the searching time and spend more time doing the info gathering. Maxathon or Firefox should be the main choices for almost anyone out there except for the retards that use AOL, installing whatever comes on a disk in the mail and are happy.

There should be some working download sites from here:

http://www.maxthon.com/download.htm

There's no need to install the AIRobotform plugin if it makes your nervis huge. I don't like any auto form stuff so didn't install that part (gives you option during install).
