Sick badger baiter snared
Court urged to take tough stand after video horror

By Lisa Smyth

01 June 2005
A Co Down man faces the possibility of a £10,000 fine and three months in prison after he pleaded guilty to a "horrific attack" on a defenceless badger.

Police and wildlife experts welcomed the conviction yesterday of 30-year-old Martin Titterington of Rathgael Road in Bangor and called for the court to impose the maximum sentence possible for his part in the sadistic destruction of a badger sett and mauling of a wild animal in Cloughy in February 2004.

Titterington was brought before the court after he was identified from footage secretly filmed by a member of the public, which showed him holding the badger as it was savaged by two dogs and then kicking it as it lay injured on the ground.

The USPCA launched a manhunt following the discovery of the disturbing film and, at Ards Magistrate's Court yesterday, Titterington pleaded guilty to baiting a wild animal and disturbing a protected animal - charges which carry a maximum fine of £5,000 each and up to three months imprisonment.

A retired wildlife liaison officer for the PSNI, and one of the people responsible for bringing Titterington to justice, Martin Mason, was in court yesterday and called for Titterington to be dealt with severely for the "horrific attack".

Commenting on the case, USPCA chief executive Stephen Philpott said: "The savagery meted out by Mr Titterington to the badger is not an isolated incident.

"The USPCA is witnessing a marked increase in the barbarities of badger baiting and dog fighting.

"It is our hope the court will deal with the perpetrator in a manner that reflects the degree of mercy showed by him to the unfortunate badger."

Titterington had been expected to contest the charges before him but, at the last minute, he changed his plea to guilty, which prevented the details of the sickening attack being read out in court.

Due to the serious nature of the charges, the magistrate postponed sentencing until June 27 to allow time for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.

fuckin despicable.

its like a girl claiming rape when it was consensual. scummy scummy bastards.

The badger was clearly on the cell phone, but should have followed the orders.

Sorry, I haven't read the memo telling me I had to respond in a serious manner. I'll look into it as soon as I'm done filing these TPS Reports.

Probably not so good. They are popular targets for varminters, along with coyotes, jackrabbits and sage rats(prairie dogs). It seems they are more useful as a live long-range rifle target than as table fare. Not my kind of sport, but it is pretty popular in desert-type communities.

If you get a hankering for a nice plate of badger surprise, do let us know! :D

It's a giant pissed off rat. I would expect the same treatment given to Mickey Mouse on PCP.

But, Clearly, this badger was the mascot for WI, otherwise who would give a shit?

I'm clapping at the irony in Bubba's statement, which I think was intentional(I hope). Also, I'm not a vegan, just a vegetarian...hell I eat seafood even, so I'm a bullshit vegetarian too.

Now small rant since you bring up vegetarianism...

IMO it's more important that people support organic and environmentally sound farming, whether or or not they have livestock, than it is to simply not eat meat. For instance I know vegetarians who eat McDonalds salads very often, which is really hypocritical because they are still supporting hormone ridden livestock industry and not to mention pesticide ridden veggie industry too.

Could go on about that, but I don't want to derail this thread even more than it already is.

My mistake, Kev. I had gotten your views confused with Dar's from a hunting topic last year. :)

And I do agree completely on the irony.

PS: And to add to the subtle-derailment, I am a big fan of organic food. :D
