A) The big picture is something not palateable. It's easier to say "Look at the big picture." than it is to say "Let's nuke them to hell and beat them into submission so we don't have to worry about them anymore." or "This will be great for the oil companies."

B) He is using that line as a cop out of some sort.
People can't handle the big picture. If we were told the big picture, we'd all be speaking chinese in a few years from non action.

I've given the straight forward reason for anything we do over in the middle east: OIL.

People are too naive to realize that without oil our way of life goes into the shitter. They can't seem to make that connection even though they all ride around in gas guzzling cars on jam packed streets with other gas guzzling vehicles. Our food and construction material is delivered via oil guzzling trucks, trains and planes.

The most straight forward answer Bush could give is that we are in the middle east to secure our oil supply. Secondly, we need to take out the religious fanatics in the middle east that are a threat to our way of life.

No democrat, republican or independant is going to say that because you need to fool the general public into defending a "just cause" or otherwise they would destroy themselves through peaceful pussism ignoring the collapse it will cause.

Fight for alternative energy sources if you want to make a difference. Debating over who gets into office doesn't mean a thing. They're all the same. A major effort in research and development is required to enable the United States and other oil sucking countries to take the moral high ground again. Better yet, educate the masses on why we need to solve the energy issue. Until then, the politicians will play whatever hand they need in order to get votes.

I respect your well thought out and honest opinion but I don't think the current way is the right one.

Think about it: in supposedly 40 years the world oil supplies will be running low. Even were we to control all the oil, we still have this problem. Not only that but wars are very expensive. (Although I suppose not es expensive as not having access to oil.) So it makes more sense to fight the root of the problem than the symptoms. If we spend 70 trillion dollars on Research for altenative fuels I bet we could just about do away with oil.

The Republicans actually ease up on things like fuel efficiency, and power plant regulations.

I really do think the Dems have a better chance of actually making more incentives for fuel efficiency, and alternative resources. Gore had some plans, but I don't see many Republican sponsored plans for this. (Hell if he could invent the internet*...I'm sure he coulda done something positive in this direction had he been elected;))

Still pissed about Toilet regulations.

I believe the Environmental Regulations put forth in the early 90's are the reason any new homes being built today require at least two flushes for a decent BM.
Three on the day after Thanksgiving.

Not sure if that saves a ton of water or is a 'wash' with the water saved with the basic pee flushes. Someone do the math please.

Totally. And then how much water is wasted by toilets that stop up easier?

Enivornmental regulations should not affect consumers in any way. They should be mostly transparent to the end users.

That reminds me: I've always wondered why American toilets have so much more water in the bowl than the ones back home. The water level is way higher. It is almost like they want you to splash yourself!

We have less skid marks to wash away with the toilet scrubber thingy because of the higher water levels...but more double flushes because of something getting caught in a high swirl whirlpool and not making it down the pipe with the initial flush.

That's great in theory, but in practice the environment would just go to shit. Doing most anything, including preserving the environment, requires sacrifices.

I'm willing to sacrifice by paying higher taxes. If it means my toilet doesn't clog and I don't spend 30 mins each week arranging my cardboard. =P

Waterless Urinals are out there.

Image

It sounds like Illinois is doing their part by making them illegal!
They sound like something straight out of a science fiction movie, replacing the standard pool of water and urinal cake with a replaceable, biodegradable filter that contains a floating layer of liquid sealant. Urine possesses a magical ability to penetrate the sealant, which then re-closes to seal off any stankiness while the pee goes down the drain. Amazing!

Waterless urinals save hella water and hella sewage expenses, and are already in widespread use at choice locales including Disney World, the San Diego Zoo and the Rose Bowl (where waterless urinals saved an estimated 130,000 gallons of water on New Year's Day alone).

So, you ask, why aren't waterless urinals widespread in Chicagoland? Perhaps it's because they're currently illegal in Illinois. That's right... our state operates under the Uniform Plumbing Code (as opposed to the International Plumbing Code, which rules the school in 29 other states nationwide), and waterless devices are explicitly forbidden by its laws. The Illinois Department of Public Health allowed city hall to install five of the futuristic devices as a trial, and will monitor the situation for six months (manufacturers swear the waterless urinals actually contain fewer germs and bacteria than their standard flush counterparts, while plumbers unions and some health officials find them suspect).
I'd say men are doing their part to conserve...it's the women that are wasting all the water!
Men's restrooms are quietly undergoing a plumbing revolution that some say could make them a lot cleaner - and healthier. Over the past few years, more than 100,000 have been retrofitted around the world with a new kind of urinal that doesn't use a flushing mechanism or even water. Instead, the urine passes to the sewer through a nonwater liquid seal that covers back over to prevent sewer odours from escaping into the restroom.

Some scientists who have studied the technology say it drastically cuts down on germs in the restroom because there is less water in which bacteria can grow. The potential benefits are huge, they add, because so many diseases have been linked to public restrooms, including hepatitis outbreaks. Urine itself doesn't cause germs. In fact, urine by itself is so sterile that doctors say it can be used to cleanse a wound. The problem, they say, is that urine, when mixed with water in a restroom, can breed bacteria that can lead to disease. Flushing of the urinal splashes the bacteria into the restroom, spreading germs on walls, doors and other places people touch.

With millions of urinals in the world, proponents of the no-water technology say the new toilets could save billions of gallons annually and help ease shortages in arid places, cutting down on utility bills at the same time. As much as 45,000 gallons gets flushed away annually in a traditional urinal. "This might be the greatest invention in toilets since the flush," says Charles Gerba, professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, who this year published a report lauding the cleanliness of the technology. Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles published a similar report in 2000, after installing a no-water urinal in one of their restrooms and comparing its bacterial growth rates with those of traditional urinals.
