Fun movie, lots of stuff gets trashed, some interesting fight scenes, great f/x. Not going to win an emmy, and Vin still can't act well, but this is a role he doesn't need to act much in at alk.
Enjoyed some of his commentary too, heh.
Interesting ending..

But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

What the hell was up with his glasses??... I havent seen pitch black, but from what I understand the light hurts his eyes...
So why does he take them off every 30 seconds in the movie by pulling them over his head.... hes even in some pretty bright rooms with them off...

This 2cp has been brought to you by DOKURANGER!
I don't even remember him in that movie! Was he one of the corpses on the beach?Canelek wrote:He was good in Saving Private Ryan as well...I may just see this one since I did enjoy Pitch Black.
Well he did a good job in Saving Private Ryan because I don't remember him so he blended in well and didn't ruin the movie : )
This movie is sheer garbage, my god, the acting was poor, I could drive Mack trucks through the plot holes and I had to struggle to stay awake.
Next thing you know Vin and John Travolta are going to team up to make another L Ron Scammard movie.

I expected more than I got from this one.. The special effects were decent, but the movie itself was somewhat boring. More than once I found myself wondering how much longer until it was over. None of the characters draw you in and it's just not that interesting to see what happens to any of them. Good for a rental, but I wouldn't recommend the theater for it.
The console game on the other hand was pretty darn good.

I liked it a lot. People are saying that Vin can't act...well who would you put in this role? Christopher Walken?

I give this movie 8 out of 10. Spoilers follow:
The Good-
This movie had an incredible visual style that put Pitch Black to shame. The action sequences felt very visceral and non staged. The main antagonist was actually a worthy adversary which is important, considering what an unrivalled killing machine Riddick is throughout the entire movie. The supporting cast were very good in their roles, even though typecast, with a lot of effort obviously being put into building a story for the next two movies. It was also good to see the movie not obsess over explaining itself and its technology, which is an easy trap for sci fi to fall into. Overall, it was good storytelling and great entertainment. I also felt the movie was very original (at least movie wise, see below).
The Bad-
It was basic sci fi level dialog and the fighting camera work, while good for giving a feel to the movie, was overdone especially in the last fight scenes. It also had a decidedly more fantasy feel to it than its predecessor, Pitch Black, which kind of took away from the grittiness. Killing Kira/Jack off might serve a purpose in the future movies, but even an anti-hero needs a reason for people to root for them. Guess we will see how that pans out.
The Ugly-
It sure seemed to me that a lot of the story elements were loosely pulled from the Warhammer 40k universe, enough that I am suprised there were not any legal wranglings over it. Even the guns used in the movie looked very close to 40k guns. While it was cool to see, it left me feeling as if I had seen something slightly plagurized. This won't bother people not familiar with the 40k universe, but it was a small distraction for me.
Also, Vin Diesel in dreads was something I coulda lived without seeing.
I look forward to the next two movies, in any case.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I thought it was better than Pitch Black... The whole aliens killing off everyone one-by-one just didn't interest me. I found Pitch Black, while better than I expected, still on the boring side. Chronicles just felt like it had more depth.
I agree with Jice on the Kira/Jack thing. Not sure what was up with that!
Oh and I don't know anything about Warhammer 40k so that didn't bother me.
(And I'd like to add that the wolf/dog things on Creamatoria were lame and poorly done. They had 'fake' written all over them. That part could have been cut out.)

Yeah the Kira \ Jack thing was strange. I was expecting Riddick and her to hook up at some point in the movie, then the ending just kinda killed that.Aslanna wrote:I thought it was better than Pitch Black... I watched this one on HBO-HD last night.
I was looking for a reason to turn the channel but ended up watching the whole movie. (was it because it was the only good thing on in HD? Maybe!) Not bad but the macho lines Vin had to say weren't that great.
Overall nice special effects and action. I get the feeling that if there's a book out there it's a lot better than the movie.
72/100
Categories Chronicles of Riddick fits in:
-Friday Night/Saturday Night starter movie - not the highlight of the night
-Bad date time killer
-Special Effects/Sci Fi
-MST3000 type talk during movie and make fun of bad acting and plot holes

I've seen this movie a few times. It's not that I like Vin Diesel...or dislike him. But I consider this movie to have untapped potential. I think Winnow is right on when he said if there is a book it would be better.
The reason I say this is because it had...or has...the potential for a really interesting story. The underverse...Lord Marshal...the conquest of worlds...the stealing of souls. I guess I watched it twice because I like to let my own imagination create more to the story than there was in the movie.
5/10 for acting
8/10 visuals
10/10 cheesy dialogue (it's an animal thing)
9/10 for potential to make a good book series

I think William Shatner should have played the part of the Elemental imo... there was some line when the Elemental was doing some narrating regarding the Necromongers where she started describing the Lord Marshal and uses the line (I think this is at least close) "part man.... part... something else"
Seriously, Shatner could have made that kinda line into comic gold (especially if he wasn't trying.)

did anyone actually watch this movie??
if not i will break it down for you in the simplest form possible...
... piece of shit.
yet another american example (ref the last 3 star wars) of style over substance and/or storyline.
when are directors going to realise that special effects can no longer save a piss movie. sorry folks but the acting was horrible, the storyline was horrible, and vin diesel is little more than a leprosy ridden arnie.

I thought it was pretty good in the theater, big screen, good sound system. Rented it later, not so good on the small screen. Not a movie to watch twice, great for a rainy afternoon time waster though.
No it's not a "good" movie. Doesn't stop it from being entertaining.

eh? Armageddon worked for pure action/comedy entertainment big summer type ovie. Ben Aflake sucked but everyone else was good.miir wrote:The Core was at least more entertaining than Armageddon and that other movie about the exact same thing that came out within a month of it.Aslanna wrote: Take 'The Core' for instance!

The Core and Armageddon didn't come out at the same time so maybe you mean another movie.
