I have that SOE deal thing for $22 for like SWG, EQ, EQ2 and Planetside (i think)

I log on to SWG every once in a while but there's not much there that holds my interest for very long. Jump to Lightspeed is fun for short sessions, but like everything else in SWG, it's tends to get a bit dull rather quickly.

I haven't checked out the combat changes they have made recently, but I doubt it made much difference. The dev team for SWG is pretty inept and they move at glacial speed.

I have heard some really bad things about the combat revamp. I haven't tried it out for myself yet, but here is a quote from the SWG boards from one of the many "kbye" type responses to it. You might want to let this combat revamp smooth out a bit first.

Excerpt of one guys opinion... "Well, today was my first day with the combat upgrade! I'm a 31-year old, former software developer myself, so I was giving SOE the benefit-of-the-doubt and was hoping the new system would be an improvement. I'm a level 39 pikeman, master artisian, and I have pretty good rifle skills. Basically, I was a well-balanced character before, but certainly not GOD-LIKE or a JEDI.

Here's a synopsis of my ACTION PACKED, FUN (games are supposed to be fun) day with SWG:

- Arrived in Dantooine, naked.... I'm cool with that. No problem. I refitted my armor, so now I'm wearing padded armor. I might look like a papal bodyguard, but that's okay.

- I needed some new armor leggings, so I went to craft them... CAN'T CRAFT ARMOR ANY MORE. Okay, it's an upgrade... things are gonna change. That's okay.

- So I headed to an armor store... Upon leaving the city I was one-shot killed by an NPC. I flew off my swoop and just died in a bloody heap. I figured this must have been a fluke.

- Awoke in the cloning station... now I need more armor because some of my older armor was now completely decayed. Fortunately I have some at home, so I head toward my house on Correlia.

- All my waypoints mysteriously disappeared. I can't find my house now. I drove around for 20 minutes, and finally found it.

- Upon arriving in my house, a GIANT GUBBER chases me inside! Okay, no problem there... I pull out my long vibro axe... CAN'T USE IT, NOT QUALIFIED... Okay, no problem there... I pull out my Tusken Rifle... CAN'T USE IT, NOT QUALIFIED. Okay, now this is a problem. I'm already down to 50% health by now. I pull out a CDEF Rifle (yes, a CDEF) which is the only thing I had on me because I looted it a week ago. I fire at the gubber, and do minimal damage. I'm about to die, so I run outside my house and just on my swoop and speed away. Yes, where I once took on 5 stormtroopers without a sweat, I have now been evicted from my house by a gubber.

- I drive far enough away to stop combat, then I turn around and head back home. When I get off my swoop I am attacked by three gubbers. I am immediately incapicitated.... THREE TIMES. Fortunately I managed to get up, and head back to town.

- I still needed to get some armor, so I decided I would head back to Dantooine since I can't get into my house. There are some GREAT armor shops on Dantooine, so I knew I could find something. So I fly to Dant, and drive to my favorite armor shop. I park my swoop outside and I am immediately killed by a HUURTON.

- I clone, figured this was a fluke, so I drove my to my armor shop. This time I am attacked by a level 2 BABY HUURTON. Fortunately, my CDEF did manage to take it out. But the baby did 50% health damage to me. As soon as the baby is dead, one of those SHAMAN types runs over (still a lower level than me) and kills me instantly.

- I clone.

- I logout.

- I visit http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com <http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com> and cancel my pre-order of RAGE OF THE WOOKIES. I don't think I'll need it.

In sum, I died three times and I was incapacitated three times within the span of 90 minutes. I arrived optimistic and ready to enjoy the new system. My goal for today was just to get some new armor. All I did was decay my old armor to the point that it is useless. So I accomplished nothing. And I certainly didn't have "fun" (which is why I play in the first palce).

I'm still optimistic, though. I think I just need to give the developers some more time to work things out. And if they can't, then I guess I'll leave. No big deal."

One of my accounts are active since I have the Station pass on it as well. I still log into Planetside once in a while, but I have been sucked back into EQ. I mainly log back into SWG once in a while just to make sure my houses and such are ok. Now that the upkeep comes out of your bank automatically, I only really have to pay upkeep on a house that is on my doc account.

I have not really had the time to log in and play much since I am spending my time in EQ, and I don't know how much I will continue to log into SWG. Our guild there (RIDER) on Eclipse hasn't been too active the times that I have logged in. I believe that many moved on to EQ2 and/or WoW.

I feel that SWG has come a LONG way since release. The combat revamp was much needed in order to promote more than cookie-cutter combos which everyone was using and teamwork. Anybody could handle taking out almost any mob before the revamp started, and this took away most of the challenge of the game. I think that the thing the devs are the worst about is warning people of what EXACTLY will be affected by upcoming patches. Most of the time they make sure that existing/worn items are not affected.

Although many complain about the combat upgrade, it is probably the single greatest thing SOE has ever done to this game it actually makes the game fun again.

Gone are the days of jumping into a fight with 10 even leveled mobs and killing them in 5 or 6 blows. It actually takes thought and some skill to make it through a fight. If you achieve the rank of master in a profession it means something. I remember the days of mindless grinding when it took no time at all to roll up a million exp for FS trade in. Now the exp is harder to come by and it takes talent to get it (think WoW or EQ2 in space).

One thing they are allowing right now is a total respec to anything you want for the vet players. If you’re a weapon smith now and don’t like it you can trade up and use the boxes to gain master in any other profession. It’s a nice feature to keep the people playing that may feel slighted by the changes and allows you to respect every 12 hours so you can check out many different templates in a short amount of time, this however ends in a few days..

Over all the game has improved 200% in my mind, I know some people will see it as the game they loved being destroyed, I see it as a game I thought had potential being revamped into a great game.

My wife bought me SWG - The Total Experience (An Empire Divided, Rage Of The Wookies, Jump To Lightspeed...all in one box) yesterday afternoon. We saw Episode III on Saturday and I was telling her there is a game where you can play in the Star Wars universe. I guess she thought that was kind of neat.

Soooo....now I have the game and a 30 day trial. I created a character last night on Bria...and I feel like such a newb. I am not even sure I chose the right server. Anyone have any advice or good/bad things to say about a server?

Regards,

Moon

I believe the servers were originally brought up in alphabetical order, and Bria was one of the largest. In many games that can be a bad thing, but the SWG worlds are so large that you rarely run into people unless in some cities or very popular hunting spots.

It actually works to develop some of the communities that players start within the game.

Nothing wrong with Bria. Your best bet if you dont know anyone on the server your at is find a guild as soon as possible to help with the transition. Armor, weapons and a nice speeder arnt cheep but often a deal can be struck with other players for items like these if you put up a house in their city(every player city has to maintain a specific population). If you want an easy road start over on Kauri and I can hook you up with everything you need to get started. Just send an in game email to cidvicious.
