The Green Butchers/De Grønne slagtere

Post by Canelek »

Goofy, quasi-Delicatessen Danish flick about 2 guys that start their own butcher shop in a small Danish town and meet with immediate success. What makes them a success, you ask? Well, that answer is easy--high quality meats.

I think this is the first Danish film I have seen(outside of porn). It is pretty good and has an easygoing narrative and subtle comedy that makes it flow well. Although the plot is rather simplistic, it is an enjoyable movie. The theme, of course, is quite borrowed, but it is pretty cool nonetheless.

If you enjoyed that you might want to take a look at a couple of other movies from the same writer/director: Flickering Lights (Blinkende Lygter), In China They Eat Dogs (I Kina Spiser De Hunde), and the oscar winning short 'Election Night' (Valgaftenen). Election Night was the third straight nomination for him, before that it was 'Ernst og Lyset' and 'Wolfgang'.

Overall he's not the greatest moviemaker - a decent enough writer and director - but his dialogue is top notch.

Flickering Lights are great.
It should be noted that unlike the US, danish movies does not have a long history of action movies. Back when you guys were making westerns and other good stuff, we made only a few movies, and theyre luckily unknown outside Denmark.

After 1994 when we made Nattevagten (Night Watch, remade in the US, with HORRIBLE result, if you seen the US version of Night Watch, try to find the original, its worth it), danish movie industry got a lot better regarding action and suspense movies.

We dont use a lot of CGI action stuff (like Star Wars), and untill 1994, action movies wiht gunfights was almost non existing. But we gotten a LOT better, and the movies we make still got the essence of danish comedy, and good action. It should also be remembered that guns are a LOT harder to get here than in the US, so when the "hero" in Flickering Lights get a AK-47 as a birthday gift, its something VERY major to get here :)

But if you want to see good danish movies, i would reccomend trying to find the following for download

The Green Butchers (De Grønne Slagtere)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342492/

Flickering Lights (Blinkende Lygter)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236027/
The absolute best part of this movie are seeing the actress Sofie Gråbøl get hit in the face. Normally i dont like to see women get hit, but ALL her roles the last 6 or more years have she have been playing irritating bitches, to a degree that everyone i know that hiave seen this movie cheered when she got hit :)

Night Watch (Nattevagten)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110631/

Riget (The Kingdom), (Edonkey download link here: http://www.the-realworld.de/modules.php ... e&rid=5570 ). Yes, thats what they mutilated to make Kingdom Hospital. See this instead.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108906/

In China They Eat Dogs (I Kina Spiser De Hunde)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180748/

Pusher
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117407/

Adams Apples (not sure if its released outside DK yet, only just in theaters here)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418455/

None of the movies above scored less than 6.9 on IMDB, thats pretty good :)

But denmark can also make bad movies, see proof below, we actually got #21 on the bottom 100 list on imdb :)

Coolio, thanks for the suggestions. I don't get a chance to watch many subtitled movies because they require me to stay focused on the screen! I think the last one I saw was Run Lola Run, which is in German(a bit easier to follow due to my remidial knowledge of the language). I actually own that one now. :)

I will be sure to check some of these Danish films out. Thanks again.

Np, feel very free to write what you think about them :)

Im sure you can find most of them for download somewhere, and find some subs :).

Oh, and after checking IMDB again, De Grønne Slagtere are actually the movie that had the lowest IMDB score of the ones i listed :)

I watched De Grønne slagtere again tonight to pay closer attention to the dialogue. I think this will be one for the DVD collection. :) Next week, if I have time, I will track down some of the other suggested Danish films as this is almost the perfect dark comedy.

A couple things:

Line Kruse is way hot.

It sounds like everyone is speaking backwards. Is this a Danish thing, or a particular dialect? We don't get that many people visiting or migrating from the Scandinavian countries, so I have like 0 exposure to folks from that area--even when I lived in LA...

I must know more! I have always been a student of different cultures and all of the people I know from Sweden or Denmark via IRC or the years in EQ, speak better English than most Americans anyway. :P

Well, the language in those movies is pretty much straight forward danish, although with a few twists here and there to underline the characters personality I suppose.

So if they sound like they are speaking backwards then I suppose we all would to you, Probably only the Danes though since Swedish and Norwegian have a way different sound and flow to them.

I think the pronunciation of some words may have made speech seem a bit "reversed" to me--also the dialogue was pretty low-key, so that contributed. Not trying to portray Danes as some backward-speaking folks! :P

Hollywood Video has a shitty selection of movies. I will have to find Flickering Lights elsewhere. amazon.com is usually pretty good.

A friend's kid sister went to school with Line Kruse. I drooled over her more than once - so did every other guy between 12 and 20 in the area.

Cane, give "Kopps", "Jalla Jalla", "Fucking Åmål" ("Show me Love"), "Tilsammans" ("Together") and "Lilja 4-ever" a chance. Even though they're Swedish, they're actually good movies.

Damn, forgot any movie reccomendation for the kids, so here it is:
Terkel i Knibe
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386820/

Ok, maybe not for children, if you think South Park is offensive due to it being politically incorrect, do NOT se this movie :)
Basically its a movie based on a radio play on the danish Børneradio (children radio), which was then made into this animated movie.
The DVD version should have english subs, so go take a look :).

Oh, and 7.5 IMDB score :)
