Woot over half a terabyte!!!

Post by Kylere »

Well maybe not so impressive to some of you but remember since 2003 I paid off a divorce, and voluntarily took a 57% pay cut to move to Michigan.

Yesterday I added a new 200GIG WD 8MBCache to my file server, and well, to make it simple before pic one I had just spent a day burning 39 gigs to storage and freeing that space, I was seriously hurting but now see pic two.

Across 4 comps, Evocation is a 80GIG WD 8MB Cache, Aquistion is an archaic 20 gig, Conjuration is an ancient 18GIG, a 60 GIG WD, an 80GIG WD 8MB Cache, and a 200GIG 8MB cache. Divination is another 80GIG 8mb cache monster. I am a hard drive space junky, maybe this is too geeky for all of you...heh, but remember I do this for a living.

Hard drives are so cheap nowadays that it is easy to add storage. A year from now those 250GB drives will be under $100 on sale. I picked up a 160 GB drive for $40 from Best Buy last thanksgiving. My problem is that you can only fit 4 ide drives in a box.

Fry's Electronics had 250GB WD drives on sale for 79.00 after mail in rebate last week.

I struggled with the internal capacity of PC boxes and finally went with the Terastation thingy (external box designed to hold 4 HDs, RAID card and hook up via gigalan to the network).

These days, I'd rather have my storage centralized on the lan/wireless network and have my PCs fine tuned with only the OS and apps needed to function. A "fresh install" folder with apps, codecs, drivers, etc. on the networked storage makes for easy setup of fried or new PCs.

There are lots of do it yourself multiple external HD enclosures available if you don't want to pay a premium for a preconfigured one.

Yeah the centralized storage is what I work off of just not on the same financial scale.

Evocation is Mine
Divination is my wfie's comp
Acquisition is the only system on the network that files can actually be downloaded to other than http traffic and boots from a DVD drive so no matter what happens to it, I can reboot and be at 100% no matter what happens
Conjuration is all about Storage

What is funny is that my primary system has been called Evocation since 1991.

EQ spooked me with it, and I ended up running with it.

Those were all schools of magic in Dungeons and Dragons before they were in EQ.
