NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York's comptroller urged the nation's top health official Sunday to ban high-risk sex offenders and convicted rapists from receiving Viagra paid for by Medicaid.

"Federal, state and local reimbursement for the cost of erectile dysfunction drugs for sex offenders raises serious policy considerations and has the potential to place the public at risk," Comptroller Alan Hevesi wrote Michael Leavitt, secretary of Health and Human Services.

"I am asking that you take immediate action to ensure that sex offenders do not receive erectile dysfunction medication paid for by the taxpayers. I urge you to take administrative action to remedy the situation or draft an amendment to the underlying statute as appropriate," Hevesi wrote.

Its just kind of funny that the thought of not allowing sex offenders viagra hasnt occured to anyone untill now.

They're allowed it, just the state shouldn't be paying for it.

OTOH, why the hell the state is reimbursing anyone for viagra. "Yes, I'm sorry we can't fund public housing, however we can assist our boner challenged Americans"

same reason the government pays a 21 year old loser to stay at home and give him all the xanax he wants plus 339/month for having a social anxiety disorder. Meanwhile he can fly to vegas and party down with said disorder np, not to mention buy all the video games he wants and computer parts.

Uhm..Isn't having a boner what got them into trouble in the first place? I mean you don't hear many stories like "man attempts to rape elderly man in park, but couldn't get it up..."

Then again - "Sex offender" is quite overused, and I don't think this is a good idea for banning the guy who fell out the window of his house nekkid and is locked up, then charged with lewd conduct and is now a "sex offender."

It does look like they're trying to make the distinction though.

Probably depends on the state...but public nudity or public masturbation would probably get you lumped in there. I know that Ohio laws would have you charged with public masturbation if you were caught taking a piss in public. I am not sure if the law here registers that as a sex offender for that charge, but my first instinct is that it would.

That's ridiculous. In PA, that charge is 'public urination,' and I think it's like a $50 fine. I can't imagine how angry I'd be if I got arrested for 'public masturbation' for pissing in an alley.
