Rogues

Post by Bubba Grizz »

At what level to Rogues start becoming powerful (solo wise)? I have been toying with an alt so I can learn more about what they are capable of and I am finding that he can't solo very well really. Granted he is only level 15. He does well enough with a single mob but if there is a second he is pretty much toast and is looking for the sprint button to haul ass outta there.

About 2 months ago, I tried playing on a PvP server and created a rogue. He was my only character on that server. I found it extremely frustrating trying to solo with him at low levels (my main is a mage), so I stopped playing him. Then, about 4 weeks ago, I decided to try playing a rogue again. This time, I created him on the same server as my main. I decided to buy him the best gear (weapons in particular) I could find and afford, and it made a huge difference. But still, handling adds with him was a challege. But, things started to change at around level 22. At that level, he had poisons, vanish, and ambush, and I made use of them very liberally. I would still have more difficultly handling adds with him than with my mage, but when things weren't going well, I would just vanish. I now find that he is much better at grinding than my mage (I didn't AE grind while leveling him up). I frequently kill mobs before my stealth has recycled, and in some cases, I can 1-hit an XP giving mob on a successful crit ambush. This will probably change when I hit 40+, but right now, I'm having fun with him. Rogues make great alts. :)

I think a lot of it has to do with your choice of hunting grounds. I know that between my Priest and my Druid, I would not take them to exactly the same places to hunt. This could even be broken down into the tradeskill that they use. If I take a class that does great with solo pulls into a place where adds are almost a given, I am asking for trouble. I may survive, but it will not be done in an efficient manner.

I never had problems soloing my rogue in beta, and wasn't even twinked. it was harder pre-20 before you get the majority of your skills though. sap and blind will help you take on 2 spawns and vanish and sprint will help you if you can't handle them.

use poisons a lot when you solo. and of course gouge and backstab if you use daggers. remember you don't have to backstab right away.. especially if you have improved gouge you can wait for a good part of your energy to regen before backstabbing. also stock up on the best bandages because you can gouge and use first aid. pick pocket everything you can first as well and you will never have to worry about running out of red potions.

I've solo'd the past 48 levels with my main rogue, Midnyte :)

I kick major ass from day one. I solo single mobs up to 4 levels higher than me and I can handle 2 mobs the same level as myself. If three the same level come at me I can go evasive, kill one then vanish, come back and kill the other two.

Given the space, you can single pull a non-instance mob like this:

Target the mob that you want from a group
Pull the entire group
Run away and let them chase you
Before the mobs wipe aggro and run back, hit the mob that you want again (gouge usually is the best option, but throwing daggers are good too for low levels because they are instant and let you maintain distance from the group of mobs)
Now you have reset the aggro timer for the mob that you attacked. The rest of the mobs will return to their spawns on the timer from the original aggro, leaving you with one target.
(I used this method while leveling, havent used it once since... might not be good anymore)

Besides that, just keep your cooldowns ready. Rogues have a ridiculous amount of escape options, but they also have some crowd control (Evasion, Blind, Sap)

Also, remember that you can always just finish one off and then Vanish.

Truth is, rogues are one of the best soloing classes all the way from 1 to 60. The first level 60's on most servers are typically rogues. Arguably, we are the worst equipped to handle tight situations (except to run away from them). But, in a one on one fight (99% of soloing), few classes can kill as quickly and efficiently as a rogue can.

best method for leveling a rogue:
get improved ss, get a beatass, slow as shit 1h mace or sword, and spam to your heart's content.

Gouge is a waste of energy.

Backstab owns at 60 but until then, abuse SS with slow weapons.

Weapons, much more than armor seem to make a difference on rogues. I have a rogue alt that I haven't played in a while but I soloed him to 17 easily and very quickly actually.. much faster than I did with my shaman. Pretty much just bought him decend weapons and have potions that he makes... worked pretty well.
