CANNES, France - [NYT] "Its better than Star Wars"

Post by Voronwë »

AO Scott, New York Times Film Critic wrote:This is by far the best film in the more recent trilogy, and also the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed. That's right (and my inner 11-year-old shudders as I type this): it's better than "Star Wars."

"Revenge of the Sith," which had its premiere here yesterday at the Cannes International Film Festival, ranks with "The Empire Strikes Back" (directed by Irvin Kershner in 1980) as the richest and most challenging movie in the cycle.
NO SPOILERS ON THIS THREAD, or i will use my massive leverage to have you permabanned, and have the government target you for extermination.

i didnt read any more of the article than that, but that pretty much i think says it all.

AO Scott is not a Star Wars fan boy or even a sci-fi fan from what i can tell.

USAToday's Review said the same thing. "This may be the best of the lot".

It will be nice to see Star Wars go out on a good note if the reveiws are accurate.

I want to see at least one scene with an army of wookies (I saw the 1 second flash of the wookie army in the previews!)

Well I am crossing my fingers that it won't be as bad as the last two.

Saw the trailer when I went to see Hitchhikers and it looked AMAZING. Like the best special effects ever by a long way, so I am optimistic.

I am no Star Wars pyscho fan boy but the new ones (1+2) have been horribly sub par compared to the old ones (4-6).

So given the wonders of modern special effects there really was no excuse bar bad scripting for the last two, so I HOPE TO GOD they sort this one out.

I may have just crossed a line or something by giving my honest opinion but in reality, anyone who thinks the last 2 were as good as the first ones with Hans Solo and all that lot is smoking some bad crack.

Actually, If you watch Episode 2, and Fast-forward through every scene with Anakin and Padme, it's actually pretty good.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Ranking Star Wars Episodes:

Episode 4 - A new Hope

This gets the edge over Empire for being the first and therefore most awe inspiring of the series as well as just plain being a great movie. As a kid, this movie was the most amazing thing ever (probably for grown ups as well)

Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back

Lucas fine tuned things and brought in memorable characters

Episode 6 - Ewok Debacle

Still better than Episode's 1 and 2 but a dissapointing sellout to the toy companies, etc.

Episode 2 - Jim Rome

Much better than episode 1 but not in the same league as the first three.

Episode 1 - Jar Jar

Jar Jar. Overall, a flatly acted, poor character development, huge dissapointment.

----

If Episode 3 slips in between Episode 4 and 5 in quality, I'll be ecstatic.

Yep. The battle scenes were great. The Padme/Anakin love story scenes? Christ, give me more Jar-Jar please.

The Anakin/ObiWan vs. Dooku fight was horrible. "ok 2 jedi are fighting, lets keep the cameras on their fucking faces and thats it." The yoda part fucking saved that scene.

Was more talking about the scenes of the clone army fighting the droid army. The saber fight with Dooku was abysmal, I agree. I got the feeling they had to work around Lee's age and his inability to swordfight like he used to. That's the only reasonable explanation I can think of for keeping the focus on them like that. Of course, after watching the first 2 movies, "reason" becomes an unreasonable notion.

There were some pretty decent fight scenes in the movie. Obi Wan and Jengo was pretty good. It went like a fight between jedi and bounty hunter should have gone. The Clone vs Robot war could of used a little work. A few things could of been done to make the fight seem larger.

I disagree. I enjoyed that a lot. I thought keeping the camera in tight on the faces with just the play of sabre light for viual drama was a great new way to shoot the umpteenth lightsaber fight of the series.
The fact that it covered for Lee's immobility was a bonus, sure ;)

Feh, I strongly disagree. I can still remember thinking "what the fuck are they thinking?" the first time I was exposed to those shots. It totally killed the momentum a sabre fight evokes. They may as well have just put black screens in those spots because it would have had the same end effect. I think Lee is great, but if he wasn't able to do the minimal movement necessary for the fight scene, they should have used someone else.

I think doing it to Anakin as well was an "attempt" to make it seem artistic. It failed.

With the lighting they were doing during the shots that werent showing the face, they could have easily used a double.

Ide rather see the same kind of light saber fight we are used to, than see none at all.

I saw the reedited version of Ep.2 that was made for IMAX theatres. The Dooku fight I was fucking awesome. Also, they edited out all of Mannequin's "acting" scenes, but we still got lots of Natalie in the skintight whites.
