Police Shoot Buffalo Escaping From Packing Plant

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Police Monday shot and killed five buffaloes that escaped from a meatpacking plant.

Instead of fleeing, the buffalo began grazing in a yard and police fired at the buffalo with semiautomatic rifles as each charged officers one-by-one.

"If five of them would have charged at once, I'm not sure we would have had enough manpower to kill all of them," Colorado Springs police Lt. Larry Laxson said.

The buffalo managed to get out when a truck driver didn't properly park his truck in the delivery chute at the G & C Meatpacking Plant, said plant owner Frank Grindinger.

Two homes were evacuated and police cordoned off several blocks.

By the time all five animals were shot, at least 120 rounds had been fired, a few that hit empty houses and a nearby car, Laxson said. The first buffalo took several shots in the head and "didn't even flinch."

"It was not a good ending. We did whatever we could to try to capture the animals without killing them," Laxson said.

Nearby resident Martha Muehl said she felt bad for the animals, but added people are the main concern.

"It's horrible, but it would have been even more sad if they had killed a person," Muehl said.

Grindinger, the plant owner, said six buffalo escaped in December 2003. Three were also shot by police.

The Royal Mounted Yaksmen would have done it with one shot.

Where do you think buffalo wings come from?

Anyway, they were at a meatpacking plant. What other sort of ending did they have in mind for the poor critters. It was probably better than bonking them on the head with a hammer a few times.

They don't kill animals in slaughterhouses anymore. It's a waste of time. They just immobilize them and start carving them up.

I still can't believe a whole cooked chicken costs 4.99 at the Grocery store. Those chickens must not cost much to raise!

I hear Costco will take whole cooked chickens off the shelf if not purchased within 2 hours. Some chickens spend their whole lives being raised for food and don't even get eaten. Sheesh! Maybe they chop them up for Caesar's Salads or something.

Poor chickens.

The cops were probably using .223 or something, but even with more firepower, a buffalo ain't the easiest beast to knock down. They probably ruined a bunch of meat too, considering that cops generally are horrid marksmen, based on their donut consumption and big fat heads.

tranq one of them, and all of them might have charged at once. Makes sense to me to shoot them down.

Yup....espcially if they were using jacketed .223 like you would expect them to be. Rounds would more than likely just go straight through and keep on going. I would doubt too many police departments are armed with rifles made to hunt tatanka.

I'm pretty sure they weren't trained on what was the best rifle for taking down buffalo. Just a guess.

Hrmm, I've never tried buffalo meat, but I heard beefalo (cow\buffalo hybrid or something) meat is good. Just expensive and rare because the hybrids are sterile I think, so farmers trying to produce those have to raise buffalo and cows as well.

I wonder if these kids tried to save those buffalo:

BTW, use buffalo in your next batch of homemade chili - you won't regret it. :)

I had a nice, thick bison steak recently. It was rare almost to the point of being uncooked in the middle, and it was about the best piece of meat I've ever eaten.
