Back question

Post by Dups. »

I recall a few years ago I was playing hockey at a local playground. I got bodychecked by someguy and my back was to the boards. The boards went up to my lower back but there is no glass. So when I got hit my back got bent a way that it should not. I got a shot of heat that went through my back. I dropped like a sack of potatos just in case. I was able to get back up on my own and my back did not hurt at all. I never had any back pains so far and such.

I was just curious though. What was the shot of heat through my back? Was it more or less just my body's way or warning/reminding me that "umm your back isn't supposed to bend that way"? I assume it's this but I never experienced this with any other part of my body nor have I heard of anyone that has experienced it...
I have no sense of decency. This way , all my other senses are enhanced!

I am by no means a medical professional, but it almost sounds like a nerve stinger.

Acute back strain/sprain. The heat sensation was the muscle(s) stretching and sepearating, which sounds worse than it actually is. As long as your spine/discs were unaffected, you can heal from a strain in no time at all.

There is plenty of back pain involved with strains or sprains.
What he felt was definately nerve related.

Sounds like a stinger or some times called a burner to me. Overstretching or squeezing (compressing) these nerves.
If you didn't have any lasting weakness or numbness then your are probably alright.

Put some Bengay, KY, or drip hot candle wax on your back and you'll be fine.

That sensation was every neuron proximate firing in sequence due to the impact...basically the mechanical jarring initiates a sequential series of action potentials which propagate up and down the spinal and spinal accessory nerves...it is normal in spinal impacts...nothing to worry about in and of itself...Hell of a memorable feeling though...
