Jazz Great NHØP dies at 58

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, known also as NHØP or "The Dane with the never-ending name" died last night.

For those of you who don't know who he was, he was one of the last great jazz bassists of the world. He played with people like Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Bud Powell, Bill Evans, Larry Coryele, Joe Pass, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Drew, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. Melody Maker voted him 'Best bass player in the world' in 1977. He played professionally from the age of 14 and worked as a composer, arranger and band leader as well. He was instrumental in shaping the danish jazz scene from the late 60s and was a huge influence on many many bass players as well as other musicians and composers.

He'll be greatly missed.
