PvP discussions

Post by Fairweather Pure »

I'd just like to see a little bit of discussion from WoW players in regards to what classes you enjoy PvP/Dueling and why. I'd like to hone my tactics a bit more, and reading about other people's experiances helps me a lot. Especially when I read how they are defeated by druids or what thier tactics are aginst them. Since we're all from mostly different servers, perhaps we can be free to share information we may otherwise be reluctant to hand over to the enemy. I play on a PvE server, but find myself mixing it up with Hode players quite a bit.

I really hated fighting rogues at first, but now I kill them so often I realize they are nothing to fear. Pallies are probably my least favorite to fight because they simply take forever and a day. Shadow Priests are right up there in terms of long fights with similar results everytime. I do not like epic-long fights because on a PvE server, that is just more time for more enemies to show up and really kick my ass.

---My druid's first kill----

I was a WoW newb, about lvl 12-15ish. I was running my night elf south from Auberdine and saw my first PvP enabled orc running along the path towards me. I just wanted to click on him to see what class/lvl he was and I hit the wrong button...

*thunk*

Fuck. I whacked him with my staff just as he ran by. He was an orc warrior and his lvl was the dreaded skull and crossbones to me. I kept running. I ran for a solid minute and stopped to see if he was following me. I didn't even have time to turn around when I was whacked with several arrows. I ran like a little girl. After a solid 5 minutes of running all over the place, getting hit with arrows whenever I stopped, I realize this motherfucker just isn't going to give up on me. I mean, it's kind of an insult being hit by such a lower lvl character and all. I think I would've been the same way.

I eventually decide to just get it over with, but with a stroke of sheer genius, lead him out into the ocean, where he followed me deeper and deeper. Of course, I'm in aqua-form and don't need to breathe. After awhile, he retreats to the surface. Or rather, he TRIES to retreat to the surface. I dropped aqua-form and chain rooted his ass, landing about one out of every 6-7 roots and drinking a mana potion in the process. Bam!, one dead Skull and crossbones orc who just wouldn't let me run away from him like I wanted :)

---My druid and GF's hunter get fucking owned---

I'm with my GF's Hunter. We're trying to explore more of WoW and end up trying to run to Thousand Needles for God knows what. We're both lvl 31 and have only my single PvP encounter under our collective belt. Well, we had to kill a Tauren NPC (lvl30) that was guarding the Great Lift in order to get my GF to the elevator. (I could just stealth past)

So, we're PvP for the next 5 minutes, in Horde territory, and have no idea what awaits us at the bottom of the elevator. We decide to play it safe and wait out our 5 minutes at the end of the bridge nearest the elevator.

Low and behold, along comes Mr. Undead Rogue when we have less than a minute on our PvP timers. Dude is only lvl 31 so I figure he was just going to run along. No way he'd try and fuck with a hunter/druid combo of the same lvl. Oh how wrong I was.

He drops a goblin land mine at the base of the bridge, cutting off our escape. He comes up behind me and starts off his attack with a stun that leaves me useless. He then follows up on my GF, who's hunter stood no chance without my heals and in such tight quarters. As soon as he kills her, my stun wears off and he finishes me in seconds. The entire fight from start to finish lasted less than a minute. He had a lot to brag about.

---Future Tactics---

We learned a lot from that undead rogue fight. Basically, he caught us completely off guard and unprepared. We had a good conversation about what we should've done in that situation and also started rehearsing for our next PvP encounter. I'm happy to say that our druid/hunter combo is quite an awsome team now, thanks in great part to getting so completely owned. It definately helps that we're sitting right next to each other when we play.

Now, whenever we are forced into a PvP situation to pass a guard or whatnot, I go cat from and stealth. Many a Horde player has been shocked when they intiate PvP with my Gf's hunter, only to have my druid join the frey in the most abrupt way possible :) Her mana arrows do a decent number on casters and my roots can CC melee classes under most circumstances. The number of crits we both get on dmg is also a great way to end fights fast. We're a straight up offensive/dps combo once we have the enemy sorted out.

The 2 of us are highly anticipating the Battlegrounds going live. I feel that both our classes will add a great deal to any PvP situation.

This was fucking genious.

Way up there with the story of the mage who lead pursuers around Tanaris until he jumped off the sheer cliff into Un'Goro. The mage hit his Feather Fall and watched the alliance warrior/pally plunge to their deaths.

Personally I enjoy killing Paladins. It seems to me that Paladins are haughty and full of themselves in the way they carry themselves. They seem to think they have 3 lives and are unstoppable in all there glory.

A Manaless Paladin is just a retarded Warrior :)

I love knocking them down a notch or 2.

My GF is a Hunter, I know those tactics well enough :) When I battle Hunters, thier most common tactic is to die a lot. It's to the point where I consider it a loss if I kill a Hunter and have less than 50% mana remaining :)

Of course, maybe the players I've been fighting just plain suck and I've yet to fight a good Hunter. The good player vs. bad player ratio is about 20 to 1 in this game.

A must for me is Faerie Fire. I managed to stick it on a lvl 60 rogue that was kicking our ass. He didnt get very far when 10 people jumped on him.

As for PVP, I've been in 9 duels and only lost once (as a druid). The really important thing for me is to get into cat form and just keep clawing at him until I start to get low on health. Heal, add more instant debuffs and go into bear form and wait him out.

I don't die much in PVP. Although as a hunter, I have a serious issue with getting warriors dead before they kill me because of their fucking charge. Ice trap usually stops them before they get to me. I can distance myself enough to kite them after that. I can kite most melee classes like that.

I find paladins and druids to be some of the easiest to duel.

Mana draining arrows are my best friend.

I like the PvP. I'm on a PvE euro server and am currently a L47 Orc Hunter, heavily BM specced (oh noz! :P). Strangely for a PvE server there's plenty of PvP action to be had and it's a lot of fun.
I find being BM-specced with Engineering profession works pretty well for the Hunter. 99.8% of Hunters are Marksman specced so a great many people think they can just ignore the pet and concentrate on me. Wrong :) 1.2atk speed Swamp Jag frenzying on them, well, it leaves a mark. And good luck casting through that rain of attacks as well. I also never leave home without my Recombobulator. That device has single handedly won me every fight with a Mage I've ever had. Meh, perhaps its just that the Alliance truly suck at PvP on my server :)
Here's a PvP story of mine (pasted from my "guild" board). I was L42 at the time:

"Night Elf Hunters Suck Balls"
===================
It's me lunchtime see, and I'm just about to log. I'm leaving the Uldaman dig site tunnels cos I've been collecting power stones and mushroom bits. Unfortunatly I had to kill Hammertoe cos he was near a mushroom and as a side-effect of this I'm PvP+ flagged.

So anyway I'm walking out of the caves with mushroom sickness (-10 all stats) and suddenly I'm stunned - a L47 Night Elf Hunter (Spit!) has hit me with Improved Concussive Shot (4 sec stun as well as movement speed reduction) and sicced his King Bangalash pet on me. "Oh shit" thinks I. Out levelled and a pet I can't outrun. More shots coming my way all ready.
So anyway I return fire with Concuss (misses) and sic the Jaguar on him. Then I fear his pet This takes the heat off but I'm very low on HP all ready. Thankfully I get a 1300pt crit heal from my heal potion and am in decent shape. I sting him (damage DoT) and duck out of LoS to gather my thoughts. Turns out I'm not as out-of-LoS as I thought I was but he's just guzzled his heal potion too cos my shots and pet are wearing him down.
Then I remember some sound advice about how "doing something unexpected in PvP really messes them up". Hunters are a pure ranged-damage class. So I decide to charge up to him and melee with my 2H Axe. I'm so glad I spent the last few days making sure I'd capped out my skill with it Raptor Strike (200 damage) Wing Clip (halve movement speed) then circle strafing while chopping at him for 120+ per whack and my pet chews for 25-60 every 1.2 seconds. Down he goes

Then I get owned by an opportunistic Human Warlock who's been standing there watching Oh well

1 NE Hunter down, 499,999 to go.

============================

Another memorable time was in Stranglethorn on the N->S road, killing Trolls when a human mage starts bokking me with this flag on. I make sure I'm buffed and ready and oblige him. He sheeps my pet. I immediately unsheep it :D While he's still going "omgwtf!?!?1" I Viper him (mana drain DoT) and, as usual, charge into melee range. I try to stay behind him so he can't cast and he folds like wet toilet paper. This time its an opportunistic Dorf Hunter woh tries to take me while I'm (slightly) worn down. Do Alliance hunters not get Scare Beast? I Fear his pet and he's dead from my Monstrous Axe Of Alliance Fucking before the fear wears off. Both of these fools then try to gank me while I'm medding up from that fight and I spank them again :)
Now I'm out of potions, bandages etc and I've finished my quest so I head back to Booty but I'm still PvP flagged and get jumped by a trio - 2 warriors and a Hunter. Handle the pet in the usual way and kill one of the Warriors before I go down.
I res up from that fight and just as I've got my shit together I see the Hunter trying to sneak past me in the trees, now solo. I give chase and another NE Hunter goes down offering little resistance (did I mention they suck?). I then run into one of the warriors and alas his PvP flag drops while my Concussive SHot is in mid-flight.
I call it 6-1 to me and head into town :)

So yeah I'm liking the PvP so far ;)

Personally as a Shaman I love killing Paladins... maybe it's really because that is what I usually play.

My favorite encounter was when I was about 31 or so as well. I was PvP and running through Southern Barrens when I see a level 34 warrior and 31 paladin running towards me both non-flagged. So I just keep running hoping I wouldn't have to take them both on. Luckly I was already buffed with damage shield and windfury. As I pass them I saw that I got hit by an arror or something for like 5 damage then another 5 or so, when I turned around they were both flagged. I went immediately for the paladin, frost shock to slow and I had him dead before he knew what happend. He didn't even do a LH, guess he died before he hit the button. I was lucky because I got the WF proc on the first swing and he was dead in seconds... I'm sure it surprised the crap out of him. After that I just stood toe to toe with the warrior and beat him down casting FS to keep him slowed. Was nice to beat 2 players one higher and still have half heath :)

Personally I can't wait for BG either, I've never been a big PvP person but I really like the ways it's done in WoW on the PvE servers.

My second favorite encounter was in STV (go figure) a group of us (Shaman, Priest and 2 Rouges all early 40s) are finishing up the higher level quests, killing pirates, giants etc... when we see some poor level 35 horde guy get sucked into a standard alliance looser trick where 1 guy is flagged then he gets jumped by like 6 more. So we are just sitting on the side talking about what to do next when we see these newbie alliance guys pulling their same old crap... so there are like 7 flagged alliance guys in the late 30s early 40s laughing about killing the Horde player and hovering over his corpse to kill him again if he resurrects. Our rogues can't take it so they both go stealth and I start running at the alliance guys, get hit with a few spells just as both rouges de-stealth and kill half the guys before they even knew what happend... we quickly finished the others in a few seconds... We stayed for a while to let the other guy loot then kill them a few more times to teach them a lesson... hah.

Of course I've heard every server is different but on WW it seems like 90% of the people I've encounterd on the Alliance side are pretty immature and they outnumber the horde like 5 to 1 so... However I have helped some Alliance member complete quest in STV and they have me as well through teaming up to clear difficult areas. And we know of at least one VV guild there... which together probably make that 10% :)

Marb, are you talking about the one that I was there for in STV?

I'm a 60 rogue and I duel outside of Org probably 2 or 3 hours a day. I enjoy any kind of a duel, especially the tough opponents. Dueling is a great way to learn how to PvP because its leaves you at a severe disadvantage when your opponent can prepare for your attack with potions, equipment, buffs, etc, prior to accepting. You also lose the element of suprise.

As far as pvp stories.. I sapped an alliance underwater in the docks of Theramore and basically stunlocked them until they drowned, that was fun. There's also nothing more entertaining than dropping a distract in the middle of 30+ fanboi's and watching them panic.

I've also used distract to send players who arent paying attention into the causeway in Stormwind and other various hazards.

A shaman friend and I were in Hillsbrad fighting a 60 warrior and hunter. We took em down a few times, but then they got wise to us and targetted me exclusively. Warrior charge/hamstring combos, hunter daze arrows. They would ignore my friend completely until I was dead and then take him down.
