Pope Thread

Post by Winnow »

BREAKING NEWS The pope's condition has deteriorated and he has a high fever, Vatican officials confirm to CNN. Details soon.
We need a good pope thread to discuss his condition and replacement.

I guess he has a feeding tube stuck in his nose...why the nose? I was confused by an article on CNN. I couldn't figure out whether the Pope was pro life support or not.

1) I think the tube in the nose because of the treacheotomy or something - throat problems that impair swallowing. The other feed tubes go through the stomach or through the bowels I think, so this is probably the easiest for a temporary solution.

2) I think I just read he was pro-life support, although that wasn't necessarily the official catholic position and he hadn't indicated to some Bishop committee that they were changing official views.

Pope was just given "Last Rites" per Allessio Vinci - CNN International. Specifically the Sacrament of the Sick.

Doesnt necessarily mean he is about to die, but means it is serious.

And Sirensa explained the feeding tube situation well. The Pope because of the problem with his throat earlier this year, has swelling in his throat. He has some difficulty swallowing to get sufficient nutrition. THerefore they put the tube in his nose, that threads down into his esophagus and feed him that way. THe naso-esophageal tube is a temporary tube. Schiavo's tube was permanent, surgically implanted into her abdominal wall because she was not capable of swallowing enough food to sustain herself.

if he dies it will be very sad cause he is a good man.
the cardinal they have picked is a black man from Nigeria who is very "new age" as far as his policies so you may see a modernization of the catholic church once again if he takes office. We'll see.
Least he was the choice as of 4 years ago.

The colored guard's colored! Who made them the colored guard?

Hmmm, if a black pope is named, I'd be impressed.

there is no successor groomed or in place, per Rev. David O'Connell Pres. Catholic University. There are a number of people who are positioned to be in the running, the guy from Nigeria is one of those, but the College of Cardinals does not begin any preparation for this until the Pope dies.

Delia Gallagher, CNN Vatican Analyst, reports that the Cardinal of Poland thought the papacy might return to an Italian. But yeah the majority of cardinals are European, but they might feel that the future of the church would be best served by choosing somebody from Africa or South America.

I really really hope he is the successor. That would seriously be a fresh new face for catholics everywhere...and fuck the Italian bullshit they need to stop that nonsense now. John Paul 2 was the first non-italian pope in 100 years. Time for a real change.

The only thing that sucks more than having your body slowly shut down on you with age is having an army of reporters who level their cameras at you in excitement every time you cough.

Poor guy, I wish him a full recovery, or a painless passage to his reward, all disagreements with Vatican policies aside.

There was actually a caller on a talk radio show recently that was calling in regards to Terri Schaivo. She identified herself as Catholic and felt that the people fighting to keep her alive were just preventing herself the glory of being with her creator. When the show's host asked her about the Pope (pre-feeding tube), she said that she didn't understand why even he would be holding on so long. Talk about a strange opinion. I don't know of anybody that I would say would want to die sooner just to meet their creator, but I can understand someone not being afraid to die because of their faith in the afterlife.

Does she want to die sooner, or isn't concerned about it? I've no desire whatsoever to die, but I know it's going to happen at some point and that doesn't bother me either.

To have the chance at a couple miserable years with treatment and bad quality of life or a somewhat speedy exit I think I'd take option two myself. Easier on me and the family in so many ways. I've watched a couple relatives slowly rot away over years, kicking and screaming for every horrible day. I'll pass thank you.

Depressing subject.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul was in a "very grave" condition on Friday and appeared close to death after suffering heart failure and shock, the Vatican said in a statement.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the 84-year-old Pope had received the "Holy Viaticum" -- communion reserved for those near death -- and had decided himself not to go to hospital for treatment.
Signs point to Sunday with the no hospital decision.

I won't participate in the dead pool. This news makes me quite sad really.

Heard on the news this morning that Cardinals are making their way to Rome.

The last Pope died whne I was only 2 years old so this Pope is the effectively the only one I remember.

The Cardinal who would be the one to announce his death is in Rome.

That Cardinal is holding a mass at 12 noon.

I thought the traditional way to announce a Pope's death was by a smoke signal from the Vatican. Black Smoke or something like that.

Line:

POPE

OVER/UNDER: NOON SUNDAY
+140 UNDER -120 OVER

MICHAEL JACKSON PARLAY

GUILTY YES/NO
SENTENCED TO PRISON TIME YES/NO
COMMITS SUICIDE YES/NO

100 VVs gets you 500 VVs if you get all three right.

BTW, I wish the Pope well but this is a good opportunity to teach VVers a little about betting.

The over/under line:

+140 for the Under means you have to bet 140VVs to earn 100 as it's looking more like he'll die before noon on sunday. -120 over means you bet 100 VVs to win 120 as it's a riskier bet. The time and money line move as bets are placed with adjustments if one side is bet on too heavily. The house needs to make it as even as possible to make money.

Parlay:

The odds against you increase as you add more factors into your wager. Betting parlays allows you to make more VVs for the amount of VVs initially bet but the odds of winning are greatly reduced.

that is how they announce the selection of the new pope.

Funeral is 10 days from the pope's death.

on the 15th day, they begin the selection process which goes for 5 days.

each day 3 cardinals are put up for a vote. if at the end of the day there is no pope chosen, black smoke signals. if at the end of the day there is a pope chosen, then white smoke signals. so 20 days from his death will be the longest it would be without a successor.

maybe 3 each vote. 3 in the morning, 3 in the afternoon.

and then 3 new ones the next day. so if it is 3 per day, a total of up to 15 could be voted on , or if it is 3 per voting period a total of 30 different candidates are possible.

but i would imagine a lot of different guys would be up for vote multiple times, as competition is eliminated. i dont know all the details, i am just repeating what i heard somebody who did seem to know the details say.

I just remember a lot of days ending with the 'no new pope' smoke (which was black, I guess). Pope John Paul II, you may or may not recall, replaced Pope John Paul after he died having served only one month, so the world got (re)acquainted with a rare process twice within a very short span back then.

It may be in poor taste but followng the final death throws of celebrities and public figures wears on you otherwise and it's hard to avoid front page news.

The Italian media was reporting that the pope had died. They have however jumped the gun before in announcing the premature death of a pope.

CNN had a Breaking news banner a few minutes ago about this report and that they were trying to confirm wether it was true or not.

I heard a Bishop today saying it was 9 days of funerals, and then the selection process would begin at the most 15 days after the passing, but it COULD go as late as the 20th day.
