Pappa Murphy's Pizza

Post by Bubba Grizz »

Don't know if this is a national chain or not. This place makes the pizza, you pick it up and bake it yourself at home. Well, we went there last night and tried their Deeper Dish Pizza. All I can say is that it was awesome. Hardly any grease and lots of great taste. At first we thought it wasn't going to be big enough but we had left overs. Guess what's for lunch today.

Papa Murphy's is actually one of my preferred places to get pizza. There are some local joints that blow Papa's outta the water, but they want like 25 bux a large. Hands down, if I have to choose between like Pizza Hut, Round Table, Papa Johns, basically any of the chain places, Im going to pick up a Papa Murphy's. The only downside, sigh, is that they don't deliver. So those horrible hangover days that much harder!

Chicago Dish pizza is pretty good, from Pizza Hut. Doesn't beat the real thing though.

I prefer the smaller pizza places generally, since their ingredients are freshly made and cut... places like pizza hut get their dough and sauce in on a truck every day. It might be fresh (fairly), but it's still pre-made in large quantities. Small places with unique flavor and recipes are the best.

I don't like thick crust. Mainly because it ends up tasting like some trailer trash pizza, like someone just slathered toppings over a big piece of stale bread.

I prefer thin crust pizza. Though sometimes I mix it up between crispy and non-crispy crust.

I agree with Xou, the smaller places are the best. This place I know named Mario's pizza (one of 44038 different places named Mario's im sure) is the best I've ever had, and is the closest to making NY pizza outside of NY.

I saw a commercial about that the other day Grizz, gotta check it out some time.

I normally get my pizza delivered from Mr. Pizza Man, in San Francisco. It's pretty good and I think it's a chain. However, the best pizza ever for me is walking into a random pizza parlor in New York, at 3 am and drunk. Nothing beats that.

P.S. Deep dish pizza = teh suck.

Yeah, I don't normally prefer deep dish but it was a special and sounded good for a change. It was good, though.

I prefer crunchy thin crust, though. Yum.

Hmm someone favors Papa Johns over anything? You must like the 16 Inch pizza that is 8 inch topping diameter and a huge dough ring.

As a flaming poster once pointed out I abuse belts, and as such am a pizza specialist. In the US, my pizza experiences are;

Pizza Hut: Man, heartburn, heartburn, heartburn
Papa John's: No thanks, I will buy other food, before I eat it free
LaRosa's (a big ohio chain): Okay, but the sauce tastes like red colored styofoam
Donatos: Good solid pizza, not great but good
Uno's: Need to stick to being a bar, not bad, but crust is too doughy
Hungry Howies: Midwest Chain: Not bad, and good solid flavored crusts
Little Caesars: Man, plastic pizza, if you are older than 9 and like it, I feel for ya
Domino's: We will get it in 30 minutes or less, oh wait, we are getting sued because our drivers are doing 90 in a 25, hmm we will do it cheap, but a little better than Caesars, cutoff 18 years old. This place used to have great pizza until it got too huge and spread outside of Michigan.

Hmm think that covers all the big chains. But to get the best pizza in the world, you have to go to a little place in Vicenza Italy to a place called "Cuore del Napoli" which had the best pizza IMHO on the planet. Try a pizza Diavola :-)

Kylere, you missed a couple.

Cassanos is a quality pie. Sometimes the crust is a bit to crisp.
Chicagos Pizza is a good pizza buffet type place.

I do know of one Papa Murphys in the Dayton Ohio area. Dont know of any in Cincinnati.

These two chains vary widely by location, the two near me are passable. Pizza Hut is pretty nasty usually, there are good ones though.

Papa john's is invariably nasty

I did a job for some folks up in Hilliard a while back, they took us out for some great pizza at lunch, can't remeber the name of the place though. Wasn't a chain I'd heard of.

First, Papa John's... I don't know that this place is consistently bad in all locations, but I know the ones in the Greater Cincinnati area, and Dayton, are pretty piss poor. Their sauce is often sour (for lack of better descrip), they skimp on cheese in a major way, their crust is halfway between pan and thin, but tastes like wet cardboard. Sure, you get a lot of toppings when you order them, but the quality is on par with microwave pizzas. The service is slow and they should almost guarantee that your pizza will arrive cold. The only pluses with Papa John's is that they tend to stay open the latest, and will deliver damn near anywhere.

I will go with the majority opinion here that local pizza chains are typically the best. My favorites are Pomodori's (in Clifton, near UC) and Pizza Tower (yes, the restaurant is shaped like a tower).

A new local favorite of mine is Mancino's, but this may be a chain (anyone know?).

The only Pappa Murphys I had was in Rapid City, SD.

I like the idea of take-n-bake... I used to call a few minutes ahead and swing by and pick one up on the way home.

Pizza Hut Corporate Headquarters Resteraunt in Wichita Kansas > ALL

Been a year or so since I have been there, but if I correctly recall, they have a rather extensive italian menu, and the shit is GOOOOD ! All of the sauces are made in-house... none of that canned shit in this place. Hell, I think they had a different sauce for every dish on the menu. A little spendy, but well worth the stop if you are in town. I eat there every time I pass thru...

The onlky good thing about Papa John's is the garlic dipping sauce. It rather cleverly hides the foul taste of the pizza. What I hate is everytime I ask for NO pepperoncini's...they put the damn things in anyway and I gotta eat pizza that smells like vinegar pepper piss...

Just go Digiorno...it's really not delivery and with 12 oz of additional cheese and a pound of breakfast bacon, it is almost a real pizza!

papa johns in Rapid city is actually quite good.. ordering online is freakin great.. right as i leave work i send an order.. takes me 15 minutse to get there.. i walk in the door the pizza's are just coming out of the oven..

However my favorite place is Godfathers Pizza.. thats good pizza..

dominoes and pizza hut are teh major suck here..

There was one place when i lived in Phoenix i would always go to and that was New York Temptation Cafe' was run by a family from Brooklyn, New York, where i was born and raised.. talk about taking a guy back to his childhood.. the pizza, the calzones.. omg.. their special was a 20" pizza with tons of cheese and 2 toppings for 10 bucks..

The place in Rapid i REALLY REALLY liked closed recently.. was a small mom and pop type place called Upper Crust.. they had this pizza, was like an 18" pizza thing weighed 10 pouinds when done.. was quite spicy. had a medium crust on the bottom and a thin-medium crust on top and filled with 4 or 5 different kinds of meats and 4-5 different veggies.. tons and tons of cheese.. I can usually put away some pizza but i was lucky to get through one and a half slices of this.. and the crust was crispy .. so good so perfect..

It's been awhile, but when I lived in THAT end of the valley, pizza and chianti was a Friday night ritual.
