Spore: Creature Creator Released
Moderators: Funkmasterr, noel
Sounds like it's worth a look! I couldn't find a release date anywhere.Tidepool phase: In the game's initial state, the action most resembles a sort of free-form Pac-Man. There's also a strong hint of Super NES classic E.V.O. and quirky GameCube cult favorite Cubivore; fighting and consuming other creatures allows you to adjust the form and abilities of your creature.
Evolution phase: Once your creature begins to grow and take on a distinct physical form, the game switches to a more Diablo-like feel. With its emphasis on battling other creatures to strengthen yourself while making forays away from your safe haven, this section is very much about growth and development.
Tribal phase: When your creation has achieved a satisfying level of physical development, you can focus on its mental acuity. At this point, you relinquish control of an individual and instead move to a streamlined RTS interface, caring for an entire tribe of your homebrewed beasties, giving them tools, food and slowly upgrading their state of existence. Think Populous.
City phase: Here the game becomes more like Wright's own SimCity, with emphasis resting primarily on building up the technology, architecture and infrastructure of your race's dwellings.
Civ phase: Once your city is established, you can zoom out to the global scale. Here your people begin seeking out other cultures in a Civilization-style experience. Interfacing with the rest of the world can be tackled in many ways, be it militaristically or diplomatically; on foot, in boats or by airship. Ultimately, however, the goal is for your creatures to conquer the planet.
Invasion phase: Once the world is your oyster, you can move on to other worlds in your solar system to colonize or terraform. And beyond that you'll find other solar systems, scattered throughout a beautifully-rendered galaxy in which planets lurk among dust clouds and black holes spew ejecta. Here you set forth to make contact with other planets.
I'm going to erase it from my memory banks then. I operate within a nine month maximum time frame.Lohrno wrote:I'll venture the guess that if it isn't being showed at E3 (and it probably isn't...) it'll be at least another year.

I just watched the video on my lunch and all I have to say is WOW. If this game keeps true to what we are seeing it is going to be amazing. The only thing I wasnt clear on is if it's going to be online, where if you go to some other planet to try and invade its actually another player trying to fight you off. I hope thats the way it is, as I think that would give me game a longer play life, but either way it looks really cool.
This game needs to come out SOON

The idea of the game is very cool but I was already getting bored by the end of the video. Although it initially sounds massive, travelling from planet to planet, terraforming and populating, looks like it would get repetitive pretty fast.
Having game modules is a great idea but after the initial coolness factor of that, the game itself seems kind of distant and plain. The um, "procedural" aspect of the game engine, um, will be what it's remembered for.

My opinion on this is that if they made it more of a MMO that it could have a lot more potential.
Maybe make it so that each person starts on their own planet, and once they reach the galaxy level, their planet is open game for other players.. Or you could make it so that you could toggle yourself between PVP and non PVP type modes.
I realize how this would be pretty difficult as it would suck to spend a bunch of time building a planet up and have some asshole fucking blow it up, but if they could find some way to make it mmo-friendly I think its success would be immeasurable.

I think he's hit on some good stuff, but it would definitely get boring pretty fast. The replayability is all aesthetics. You look different as time goes on, but youre doing the exact same thing that you would be no matter how you made your decisions. Graphics are dynamic, the gameplay and content truly aren't.

EA has confirmed that the highly anticipated evolution sim, Spore, is no longer in the company's plans for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2008. So at the earliest, the title will see the light of day in April 2008 if that.

Wait a minute.....
Don't you see this ever extending release date as a sign that the developer and the publisher are committed to releasing the best product, as opposed to rushing to market a giant piece of shit? (dont bring up duke nukem forever... vaporware is vaporware... spore has been demoed, definitely exists, and is quite far in development)
The gameplay videos of this are quite amazing, and having something like 6 entirely different game modules would I think increase the average playtime of the game because you would most likely want to see each of them, right?
I bought Command & Conquer 3... $50... I played a few skirmishes, played a few GDI missions... haven't touched it since... It's a fantastic game with amazing graphics, but it offers only one form of repetitive gameplay. I did not get anywhere near my moneys worth from it, as opposed to a silly web game like http://www.ruletheseas.com where I've been playing daily now for a whole month and have spent $6.

Hmm, I bought it for $39, played all of the GDI missions (Ground Zero annoyed the hell out of me until I finally switched my targets on a restart), about 1/3rd of the NOD missions, and a couple skirmishes against the CPU. I guess it's all in what you want out of the game. I am still playing that and Company of Heroes between sessions with other games. The only complaint I have really had are issues with the cutscene video and audio being out of sync. The most recent patch was supposed to fix that, but it didn't fix it for meFash wrote:I bought Command & Conquer 3... $50... On topic though, I just hope that they do get the game into a (near) perfect state if they are already planning on delaying it as long as it appears.

Spore Article
The release date on Gamestop's website is May 1st (or 5th) something like that.. I might actually have to upgrade my computer a bit finally so I can play this.
IGN wrote:June 21, 2007 - The recent edition of Game Informer magazine has been causing a bit of confusion to fans eagerly awaiting Spore in production at Maxis under famed game designer Will Wright's watchful eye. The magazine states that the game has been "delayed indefinitely", which representatives at EA wanted to point out isn't the case and was misinformation taken from a recent financial call stating that Spore could slip to EA's fiscal 2009 year.
The EA representative that we spoke to reiterated that the game is on the cusp of slipping from the fourth quarter of fiscal '08 into fiscal '09 and is still very much on the release slate.
The confusion most likely sits with the fiscal 2009 piece of information. Electronic Arts fiscal 2009 year actually begins in April of 2008. Yes, this is confusing to people not in the financial world, but it's also not an unusual practice. So at this point, even if Spore slips into the next fiscal year (it sounds likely), that means that it could still be released in late spring or summer of 2008.
Electronic Arts was not willing to comment on a specifically proposed released date at this time.

Re: This game looks kind of interesting...
Bah why play a game in 2008 based on a 2005 concept... doubt they had been upgrading graphics to keep up (then it would never get released.)
But keep me informed on whether its purchasworthy when it is finally released.

Chertsey, UK - February 12, 2008 – Get ready for the next Big Bang this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. Small excerpt wrote: Unfortunately, with such an impossibly complex design even getting the basics of the gameplay right can be a daunting task in and of itself and, even with the full might of Electronic Arts behind him, Will Wright has struggled to get Spore working. The game, which he has reportedly been planning for the last decade at least, has suffered numerous delays. At the start of this year we gave it an honourable mention as a game which we thought would definitely turn out to be vapourware.
Now though, it looks like we may have to admit that we were wrong. Not only has EA confirmed that Spore will be out in time for the holidays, but the game is now in a fully playable state. All that is left to do is polish up a few glitches, test it and load it with content before release.
How do we know that, I hear you ask. Simple; we’ve played it—nearly all of it.
There are five stages or levels to Spore and we’ve played them all on the PC, as well as playing on the DS and Mobile versions of the game – though the latter failed to make as much of an impression, to be frank.
going tooo far? wrote: There’s no question in my mind that Spore is going to be fantastic on pretty much every level and I can already tell that I’m going to be have to be very careful when it’s released. Too much exposure and I can easily see myself getting addicted to the game. In that sense Spore stands to be hugely successful – more so than Guitar Hero or even The Sims.

If it's not released on the consoles, then there's no way it's going to get the kind of market penetration to succeed more than GH, or especially The Sims. It will be released on the DS but not 360, PS3, or Wii? I don't get it.going tooo far? wrote:In that sense Spore stands to be hugely successful – more so than Guitar Hero or even The Sims.

I believe I remember the dude saying he was trying to work something out for it to be released on the Wii because he felt it was a good system for it (I don't personally believe the Wii could handle it) - but I haven't heard anything further on that.

The trial Creature Creator has been leaked. It's available if you know where to look (now Supersearch peeps, just search for "spore" with date range set to one or two days. (~150mb)
Pretty fun so far. The trial has limited options. The 10.00 Creature Creator will be the full blown thing.
Install was a little quirky. For some reason an Icon or start menu execute file wasn't created. I went into the program file and launched it though (took two tries. first time it said it couldn't find config file or something)
When you're loading it up, skip the registration and also, it makes it look like buying or pre ordering the game are the only options but if you move your cursor to the upper right of the window you can close that and continue with the game. Also, when you ry to quit, all you see is a register button but if you hit options, the menu bar pops up at the bottom of te screen so you can quit the app.
You need to restart the game after switching resolutions for them to take effect.

Oh yeah, they are releasing a Sim City collection with Sim City 4 and Sim Societies along with both of their expansions for around 30$. I read somewhere that it would include the 10$ creature creator somewhere, but can't seem to locate it now for a link.
Good deal anyway IMO.

Edit: Sorry, that link sucked ass!
