Which one first? Farscape, SG1 or Babylon 5

Post by Erolz NTurnet »

Going to subscribe to Netflicks to catch up on some viewing here and wanted to ask your feelings about the three in the poll. I'm kind of divided between starting off with SG1 and Farscape but some folks I know keep saying that I should watch Babylon 5 first. Any other suggestions would be most welcome too. :)

Thanks!

B5 owns 'em all.

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

I have only seen a few episodes of Stargate so not much of an opinion. I like both Farscape and Bab 5 a lot, but between the two I would go with Bab 5 I think.

If you haven't already subscribed, I can send you a 1 month free membership to try it out. Normally I think the free time is only 2 weeks.

I can't speak for B5 or Farscape but I have been watching a lot of SG-1 recently and I am really enjoying it. The character development and interaction is probably my number one reason for liking it followed by what I found to be a pretty original storyline.

Babylon 5 was one of my favorite shows while I was in college. I think I watched the first 5 seasons, and after that, it got plain retarded (basicly when TNT or whomever bought the series)....can't remember for sure, but I think 5 seasons worth are fun.

Farscape is great. The one good thing about farscape, is that even though they have "filler" episodes, they still advance the overall storyline and character development in every episode....

Stargate SG-1.....MaGyver, come on. I cannot get into this show, because the movie was very fun and new, but the show seems to take all the good things about the movie, and ruin them. But hey, each to his own. I just get sick of watching the same group of people, go to another planet (that looks just like the last, "foresty") and save it, yet again, from bad people. Same ending every time....

B5 is probably the best written SciFi series ever in regards to the depth of the character and the message in regards to the human condition. It's what Roddenberry's goal was in the 60s but he couldn't fully achieve due to the critics and state of the nation at the time. B5 is much more than it seems on the surface, I would encourage anyone to watch it, and study it well.

tough call since they all kind of suck.

but B5 is at least watchable, and fairly OK acting wise. But the central romance between the human and Delanne (sp.) is just so damn cheesy.

Stargate wasnt even a good movie. the only good part was the 15 seconds of graphics when they went through the gate.

and farscape is garbage.

my recommendation: rent something good like "The Wire" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm", or even "24".

Keeping closer to the genre (though moving off the list, nonetheless), I'd go with "Firefly".

Firefly > all the others listed

Plus it's only one season, so you can get through it and on to the other stuff :)

Babylon 5 is only 5 seasons right? If I remember right, it was only supposed to last 4 seasons. The first 4 seasons can really stand on their own. The fifth season had some cool story elements but it also had that crappy love sideline that just got annoying.

I never saw farscape. It was never available in my area.

SG-1 is a fun show. I like the fact that they are constantly exploring and seeing new things with ties to Earth legends. It reminds me of early Star Trek:TNG before they started getting bored and having all the crappy character development episodes.

Babylon 5 was supposed to last 5 seasons, but they were told it was going to be cancelled after the fourth season so they crammed the 4th and 5th season's main story arcs into the 4th season, then they got told they were going to have a 5th season after all (after they had already mostly completed the 4th season). A big part of why the 5th season doesn't have as much sense of direction as the show had earlier.

(At least from what I have heard).

Babylon 5 was fucking boring.

I've watched SG-1 since it came out. No, it doesn't have some pedantic "message about the human condition" but then I don't watch TV to get my philosophy on. Stargate has characters that go places, meet new and interesting people, and sometimes kill them.

Also, the special effects on SG-1 GOT BETTER as the seasons went on, as opposed to B5 where they maintained consistent mediocrity.

I loved them all. Start with Bab5, then go Stargate, then Farscape.
