Honor and PVP

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

From the european WoW site:

Some really cool stuff there - and the shaman epic pvp suit looks absolutely gorgeous.

It's about time they actually put in some reasons for PvP. Don't get me wrong, I still like to go toe-to-toe with another human-controlled toon even without "point rewards," but they Warcraft "universe" has too many reasons TO reward people for PvP to leave it out very long.

One thing I don't like is how Dishonorable Kills basically mean squat. I think that the thing that has the biggest impact on reputations (at least on a PvP server) would be the people who basically run around areas frequented by people 15+ levels below them just for the easier kills. There should be more of a penalty for this in a point-based system especially when the system takes the time to actually calculate those points.

My only concern is that maintaining PVP status will become more of a chore than anything. I like PVP but if I have to sideline other important goals so I don't end up naked later on, then it just won't be as enjoyable. Hopefully the rate of accrual and depreciation will minimize it.

what about those lowbies who team up to take out a higher level person? does that mean that the higher level person gets penalized when he slaughters them even if he didn't initiate the combat?

dishonorable kills do not apply to Player vs Player only Player vs NPC

I'm hoping they will make it so your rewards are still usable if you drop a few levels in rank, but I don't know. Would suck to get your epic-level weapon, then be sick for 3 weeks and never able to use it again because everyone else is so far ahead of you :o

Is this armor stuff they can wear to instances and such like that as well? does this mean they are going to have to carry around a spare set of gear just incase they can't use theirs anymore?

According to that, Drolgin, it says you will lose the ability to use your items if you fall below the rank you attained them at - to me that pretty much makes these rewards worthless. They said they're capping the top rank at the top 0.1% percentile of the population - 1 in 1000 can hold that rank. It would be a fulltime job more than anything to maintain that rank just to use the items you're given access to at that time. Furthermore, the items at easily "kept" ranks don't seem that great to me. Then again, I have the worst possible spec for being a pvp warrior~

In any case, Battlegrounds look fun as hell - hopefully they'll be implemented some time before 2008.

Along with what Drinsic said... counterpoint:
The honor ranks are basically based on a ladder system. Starting from the top (rank 14) only two or so characters on the whole server will reach and hold this point. The rank 13 will have more positions available and so on till the sixth.

To reach and compete for these ranks you have to pile up insane amounts of honor points. These points do not get wiped week after week, nor they decay. It's simply an infinite treadmill. A pure delirium. The core of the issue is that each rank above the sixth doesn't have a set amount of points to achieve. Because the "requirements" are capped by players. So each rank has only a fixed amount of "slots" available based on the overall population of the server.

This means that the more points the catasses pile up, the more the requirements for each rank will skyrocket.

It will be simply IMPOSSIBLE for a casual player or someone who isn't able to play constantly to keep up with this insane race.

If you join the game late, if you start an alt or whatever else, basically forbids you to even HOPE to achive a rank.

So I'm the only one to notice how big is this screwup? This is the most insane design idea EVER.

Getting an item and then losing the ability to use it (without having it being part of some huge quest thing - think a paladin turning evil or whatnot) is retarded. I agree there should be an incentive for people to keep their position as top dog, but items should be kept. At the very least let people retain the ability to use an earned item for -3 ranks or something.

Only thing I want to know is if that applies to the mount as well. If it's no usable if you drop below the rank, well... yeah. I'm pissed that the raptor model isnt the normal epic mount model :(

Yeah, I seriously think it's fucked up. If anyone puts in the effort to be one of the top 1-3 players on their server, they should have the right to keep the items they earn, indefinitely. If it applies to gear, I'm fairly certain it will apply to the mounts as well.
