It is, however, just another mechanism to subtly reinforce the ideas that we have been taught to have regarding our political identity and our country. This is a discussion that is far more complex than I can hope to summarize in a VV post, but I think the point is relatively self-evident.
Well yes, brainwashing is probably overstating it. There's definitely a LOT of energy expended in US schooling to reinforce how wonderful the US is though. From leaving out the darker motivations of Columbus, the settlers, etc, etc, to simple repetition of opinion until it is seen in people's minds as facts.

BTW, completely scary that you are having a constitutional law discussion about this case =p

Forcing kids to participate in the Pledge/Anthem is probably the worst way to teach them the meaning of being an American.

I did not participate in the Pledge in HS and was never troubled by a teacher (this was in Texas, mind you). However, I do participate now and will even sing God Bless America at the ballpark because, as I've grown and seen more of the world, I am definitely glad I was born in America.

First, get it straight. Some of you are substituting the National Anthem for the Pledge.

Second, the words to the Anthem were originally a poem. The poem was put to a piece of popular music during that time - that music - was an English Drinking Song.

Technically, the song would have been in violation of copyright laws had they existed at the time.

I think the problem could be solved if they just gave every kid a beer if they stood up, so they could swing it along to the music.
