So I picked up WoW today.......

Post by Nick »

Well I succumbed finally to my inner demons and bought WoW and new ram and my general total newbie opinion so far is that it is easily more fun than any game I have ever played.

Looks absolutely beautiful, is huge, seamless and really unique, not just a blatant Lord of the rings rip off (that's not a dig at EQ2 or anything else bar EQ1, before anyone jumps on that, I haven't played EQ2 and have NO opinion one way or the other AT ALL).

Now, MMO's ony tend to keep me interested these days for a month or two so time will tell but I was amazed at how you could actually have fun doing quests (this is a new experience after the horrific sit/pull/med for 5 minutes/repeat for years bullshit I put up with in EQ).

I started an alliance whore mage solely because that bitch Cotto had already set himself up on, get this (alliance:pvp) so essentially, given the euro server nonsense I had to set up where he had already set up.

In theory if I can be getting onto US servers (if they ever allow it) I would go horde simply because Alliance are beyond weak.

From the first moment in it was so easy to get to grips with (maybe too easy?) I'm already 70 mining and 80 engineering with like 50 silver (minor equipment twinking courtesy of cotto again not included in that) and lvl 11 in just one day (and that was purely through questing, no grinding, no need!).

What I do like is the ease in which you can keep everything in a clear order, and given the interesting attitudes towards tradeskills (which although tedious after a few months MAYBE?) so far seem brilliant and innovative and new. Nowhere near as tedious as EQ tradeskills which were pretty shitty imo.

I do imagine being 60 before very long, but not being a complete insane (no insult intended) powergamer like some here that's really good news hehe :P and the concept of battlegrounds is really something to look forward to.

Soooooooooooo pretty.....the griffin rides over the land, the pied piper of hamlin subway quest (the train!) loch modan, ironforge, wow (!) it's really really fun and exciting to feel that feeling I got when I played EQ for the first time again (but if anything today was personally better and more fun).

Now.....not to dribble on and on but I do have a couple of vague questions.

1. Where do I find "course stones", is that a mining skill thing or do you have to go somewhere specifically for them (need this so I can sort out my gn0me goggles asap)

2. Regarding this whole "specialisation" business (ie arcane - fire - ice), what it is it all about? What is the relevance to it? Not demanding answers, feel free to direct me to some good WoW sites if you know them even.....

I know Arundel is considered one of the top mages so I was considering just going with his advice in the mages thread, but what actual difference does that make to you when your say soloing, or in a group....really?

3. Given the way I played today I was kept busy the entire time doing the things I only dreamed about in EQ, does it really become horrific at the top end? I mean apart from the split raid bug is it such a let down? So far it seems perfect......although it isn't really my intention to ever get into raiding again so my idea of fun may differ from those who wanna go to MC or whatever (although no doubt if I get hooked I will possibly tread down that old path again....but I am trying not to..)

4. Are there any of you VV'ers playing on Euro servers so we can meet up for a mead or two? :P

Anyway, I just wanted to note my first impressions, should be interesting to see how this turns out.

It's great being a noob!

If enjoying todays gaming makes me a labelled blizzard fanboi for life, then fair enough, because I had a LOT of fun.

1. Coarse stone comes from tin veins. Can prolly buy some in your Auction House if you can't find a friendly miner to get you some.
2. Don't play a mage so I'll pass on it.
3. Well, I've been level 60 for a couple weeks now. There's a bit of a "let down" in that the only way to improve your character is through tweaking your gear or possibly changing some talents, but at the same time, I am still doing quests, seeing new sights, pursuing tradeskills, etc, the same as I was before I got to level 60. Do I wish it would have taken a little longer yes. I haven't been into the top end zones a whole lot (BRD lots, Stratholme once, BRS twice, not been into Scholomance or MC) so I have room to explore yet.
4. Is Europe on Kalimdor? I haven't found in the Eastern Kingdoms at all, but I stayed away from the elf lands in Kalimdor...

Seeing as how you kind of get the answers to most of your questions in Wulfran's post, the mage one is really the only one unanswered (besides Euro players).

The Talents for each class are basically ways that you can "personalize" your characters. They follow a Tree format and open up starting at level 10. You will have a Finite # of points (as the game currently stands), but you can reset your points with cash. The amount needed to reset the skills goes up each time you do it to prevent changing talents on a whim (was fun to do that in Beta though). You can get to the Thottbot Mage Talent calculator here: http://www.thottbot.com/?ti=Mage

Once you learn your way around the Thottbot site, it becomes a good friend. Learning the nuances of the search function can help you find things that others might say isn't there.

Teeny, Arundel is the ultimite build for a group friendly mage. His AOE has made the difference between finishing many difficult encounters and getting wiped by the adds. Fire talents are great for soloing/dueling, I've heard, but the ability to nuke down a swarm of adds is so key to a lot of the higher end instances.

Mostly Fire and just enough Arcane to have AE5 here and I have no problems at all in UBRS or MC. It's purely what feels right to you. The only thing that every mage can agree on is that AE5 is the only class defining talent to have.
