Final Fantasy question

Post by cid »

Searching for PS2 games, I see FF 10 thru 12. If I do not want to play online, do I have to buy each version and complete it? Or do I need to just buy the latest one?

FFX and FFX-2 are singpe player games.

FFXI is the Final Fantasy MMOG.

FFXII hasn't even been released in Japan yet so not gonna be in the US for another year or so.

Frankly, if you have a PS2 and wanna play a Final Fantasy game, I recommend you picking up Final Fantasy 9. Easily the best FF game since the old SNES days.

Incorrect. Number 7 is the best since the originals, and number 8 the worst. I liked number 9, but not as much as 7, and plus about 3/4 of the way into the game it was defective and froze up, and it was too late to exchange it by the time i figured that out.

FFIV (SNES's FF2) was good too if you can find that on PS1 release.

I don't recall if FFVI (SNES's FF3) was ever released on PS1 or not. But that was much better than FFIV.

I've never played VII or IX, VIII did suck. I couldn't get past the first hour without going insane.

I've played about a third of the way through X, and I bought X-2, but still sealed. :)

I'm buying FFXII when it's released for sure, but I'm avoiding XI like the plauge.

If you're really into retro, I've seen FFI and II on a PS1 release, and also resently on GBA.

The convoluted magic system and the ridiculous over the top, 60 second long GF attacks made FF8 completely unplayable.

Final Fantasy Tactics was the best FF game if you ask me (amazing storyline), with Final Fantasy 7 and 6 coming right behind it.

In terms of FF games from the PS era...

FFVII is phenomenal if you don't gouge your eyes out from the god-awful overworld character models. My personal fave.

FFVIII is not actually a video game, but a hideous torture device designed to make you suffer for the sins of the world.

FFIX seems like fun from what I've played. Got mine second-hand for like 10 bucks and the disks are kinda scratched up so i never got far =(

FFX is pretty good stuff. Very linear until the very end where you can do some side-quests, but it's a lot like you're "watching" the game, and every now and again you get control and participate. I enjoyed it though.

FFX-2 was pretty lame, but I know some people had fun with it. Though I personally can't figure out how.

FFXI is everquest with moogles.

Yeah, I didn't mention tactics since it is much different, but that was an amazing game.

Yeah, it was a tactical RPG - very very different from the traditional style the FF line took, but damn it was such a fucking great game. Had to mention it~

For every 5 minutes of actual gameplay, you had to be sujected to 15 minutes of inane dialoge and 45 minutes of GF attack animations.

Matter of preference. I liked 9 slightly better than 7.

I liked FFX because it had a storyline with integrated cut scenes and great sound track to it that was on a level way above anything I had ever played.

Plus I liked the combat system.

From the begining (states only, not going to get into the Japanese only FF's):

FF: Old NES game, the second RPG produced on that system (following Dragon Warrior). Still a great game, but the story is a bit, well, 80's.

FF2: First RPG out for SNES. Was a breakthrough at the time, an amazing storyline and simplistic combat system mingled with nice challenges.

FF3: Graphics did not improve much but here is where FF really cut loose and went into an amazing story, coupled with a very unique character development tweak and lots of play time. Oh, and the characters numbered 12, so you got a workout building them up.

FF7: PS release, heralded as perhaps the single greatest rpg ever. Hands down, the storyline and antagonist have not yet been touched by rpg's. Ungodly amount of play time and side quests involved. Downsides were the kinda crappy cgi (By todays standards, back during it's release it was pretty decent) and the annoying blocky ugliness that represented your character outside of battle.

FF8: Became enchanted with the opening sequence, which had me running to the stores to buy the game. Quickly wished I waited for it to go into a ten dollar bargin bin after playing it an hour. Still, probably the best ending in an FF game to date. Gameplay wise though, not really worth it.

FF9: I never personally got to attached to this game. Played it only marginally. The cgi and characterization was too cartoony for my tastes. Not saying it is bad, just saying I had no real desire to play it, so I cannot comment beyond what I have.

FFX: In my opinion, the best FF made thus far. The storyline was simply fantastic, the game really began once you went through about 20 hours of a predestination thing in which you are playing the lead characters recollections of the immediate past. CGI was awesome, graphic were awesome, and the very unique way your character "levels" is a thing that is completely up to you. Add in the thousands of special gear you can make and the varied sidequests you can do all make this probably the very best FF made thus far.

FFX-2: Like FFX, only designed for teenage Japanese teeny-boppers. Good story line, excellent cgi, multipule endings. Crappy characterization (I hated the dress thing) and somewhat bland gameplay.

FF11: MMORPG, not a very good one at that.

I liked Xenogears. A lot. But I have to strongly disagree on that one.

Yea... No. Sewers, Deus, the whole second disc... Ring a bell?

Anyway cid, if you're looking for something generally easy to start off with just get FF9. If you're looking for something good get FF6, 7, or 10. FF10-2 and FF8 aren't really that great, though.

You can blame square and Final Fantasy for slightly ruining xenogear's second disc. Anyways what the hell is wrong with Deus? Which sewers are you talking about?

I guess I'm the only one who didn't mind FFVIII, once I got the hang of the magic system and where to put the magic to boost your stats. I also liked the card game in VIII much better than in IX.

FFVII was the game that got me into Final Fantasy. Loved it! FFIX is good too, though I have yet to complete it (I manage to get to the 4th disc before I stop - guess I get a tad bored or something, not sure why). I enjoyed FFX too - loved the graphics and storyline; beat the game, but not the final "boss" in the arena - still having trouble with that one.

Haven't played FFXI at all... and just waiting for FFXII to come out.

Played Tactics for a bit, but had to return the game (borrowed from a friend) before I was able to finish it. Still have to try out all the games before VII.

Sewers and Deus are both dungeons in Xenogears, possibly the worst dungeons ever crafted and put into a videogame. Those two points of the game make it appealing to quit and never return, sadly the latter is the last dungeon in the game.

I had no problems with the Nortune sewers ( i assume you are talking about that area), and the only problem I saw with deus was that it was so large you could get lost pretty easily.
